Witty British Spoof tackles lots of issues
9 January 2005
I went into watching this film not knowing too much about it. I was originally expecting a pure comedy, but that's not what it is.

While "Shaun of the Dead" is predominantly a spoof of "Dawn of the Dead", it does touch on a variety of different topics in a semi-serious way.

The title character Shaun is a 29 year old stuck in a dead end job supervising teenage co-workers. He can't seem to get it right with his girlfriend, Liz, and he never goes to visit his mother.

What makes this movie hilarious is that it took an apocalyptic event for Shaun to get his life in gear. While that doesn't sound funny, it surely is made funny by Simon Pegg's performance as Shaun.

Great dialog, a new twist on a common horror theme, and a little seriousness thrown in make this a great film. I wouldn't take anyone squeamish to go see it, but all violence is made to look obviously fake and is done in a slap-stick manner.

Catch this one when you can, it's spectacular!

Unappealing and unnecessarily perverted
9 January 2005
I went into this film thinking that I would see an unorthodox film involving sex. I've seen many films that could fit this description such as "Happiness" by Todd Solondz and "Romance" by Catherine Breillat, but unlike those films, I failed to see a point in this one. The sex scenes were extremely grotesque in their graphic and perverse nature, especially the scene involving sodomy. I can't say I would recommend this film to anyone. The reason that it gets 3 stars out of 10 is because I think Marlon Brando was very convincing and entertaining, I just failed to see the point in this film as a whole and therefore I cannot give it a good rating.

Commonly misunderstood
16 December 2004
While this film is clearly not for all audiences, it does make an interesting point about how awkward the issue of virginity is for women. Virginity is an interesting double standard that woman have to deal with in our society and this film explains that in a very direct way.

If you are an easily offended or easily shocked person, do not watch this film because chances are you will be thinking too much about being shocked to think about what Catherine Breillat is trying to say.

In my experience, Breillat makes films that are not meant to be "enjoyed" in the traditional sense, but rather analyzed and understood through thought and symbolism.

If you are not someone who likes to think about films past the surface, you may not want to watch this film.

I think there is a lot to be thought about an analyzed from this film, so if you're up to seeing something unlike you've ever seen before and you're not easily shocked, go for it.

Romance (1999)
If you're easily offended or traumatized, slowly back away
9 November 2004
This movie is fascinating because it forces you to completely reanalyze your view of sex, however it usually manages to at least slightly traumatize most people that watch it. I've seen quite a few movies and this is one of the only ones I've watched thats really made me uncomfortable. There is a lot of sex in the movie and it is presented in such a way that you're not meant to find it pleasurable. Pay attention to the color scheme: red, white, and black. Why do you think that it's like that? What does this mean in the context of the movie? Prepare to be disturbed while you follow a nymphomaniac school teacher on a strange sexual adventure.

People want a movie with skills...
4 September 2004
I love this movie so much! I think it perfectly highlights how awkward and often boring it is to be a teenager. It illustrates that the best way to make it through is to find something you're interested in and being yourself.

The characters are original and very interesting and the script is so quotable

It's not the type of movie that you watch for plot. If you watch this movie and expect some kind of plot twist or whatever, go watch a Hitchcock film. This movie is one you watch to identify with the characters, laugh at the characters, and quote the script.

Definitely a must see! 10 Points!!

Awesome for a movie, but only pretty good for Tarantino (spoilers)

Warning: Spoilers
If you've not seen the movie, and don't want to know what happens, stop reading now.

I really enjoyed watching this movie but I think that the fascinating character of Pei Mei should've been given more depth. I also don't think that the way he died at all made sense to the rest of the movie and I found the manner of death and the fact that he died extraneous.

Uma Thurman is a bad ass as usual but her best scene was the scene where she rips out Elle's other eye and steps on it. That scene *RULED* but the fact that you don't know what happens to her ultimately bothers me. I did like the credits with the cross-out motif. That was creative.

I think that David Carradine, the actor that played Bill, the title character, was boring. I was expecting someone more interesting to play that character. Someone more bad ass like Clint Eastwood or something. I think his death was ironically non-violent and I liked it, it was appropriate.

I rated this movie a 10 because I found it highly entertaining and compared to most other movies that've come out lately, it ROCKED.

Kaos (1984)
8/10
Extremely Bizarre, but in a good way
19 March 2004
Warning: Spoilers
I watched Kaos last night for my Italian Culture class. There are 4 parts but the first 3 struck me particularly. The first one "L'otro Figlio" or "The Other Son" was a sad story but I really liked it. The main character for this segment, Mariagracia, gave a riveting performance.

The second story "Mal di Luna" or "Moon Sickness" is a werewolf story. This is where the movie starts to get a bit bizarre. Newlyweds Sidora and Bata live in the sicilian countryside and every full moon, Bata is enchanted by the moon and it rules him. He howls and barks like a wolf and it causes him great pain. Sidora totally freaks out and doesn't stand by him at all...

The third story "La Giara" or "The Jar" is extremely bizarre but I found it entertaining. This guy named Don Lollo who looks like what Mick Jagger would look like if he were an Italian man, acquires this huge clay jar that the town will put olive oil in. One night they come out and it's broken into 2 pieces. As a result, Don Lollo hires this eccentric potter to come fix this jar with his "magic glue" After a long series of events, the mad potter gets stuck inside the jar. It ends up being pretty funny...

All in all, I liked it. I think the editing between stories could've used a little work, but overall I thought the settings seemed very realistic. I really like the creative shots that the movie had. Most of the people seem like real sicilian people, not just random actors.

I will rate it 8 out of 10 :) ********

Forrest Gump meets Rainman surprisingly charming
9 February 2004
Thornton creates such a believable character, even his walk and his presence sell that he has become this character. A completely engulfing story that grabbed me from the first scene, I didn't expect to like it, but it definitely grew on me. Thornton plays a psychologically challenged man who has a good heart but little self control and scattered intelligence and the manners of a 10 year old. It's not a family movie, or a movie that is easy to watch, but I would reccommend watching it if you feel like thinking while being entertained. 10

Gotti (1996 TV Movie)

Poor man's "Godfather"
16 April 2003
This movie focuses a LOT more on just the actual man John Gotti rather than all the affect he has. Armand Assante is very convincing and did an excellent job acting. However, unlike The Godfather, this is a REAL story. That makes it all the more fun to watch. It's definitely worth watching if you're a gangster movie addict like me

It's definitely no Godfather, but if you're looking for something new...give it a shot

BULL POWER!!!!!!!!!
18 February 2003
`Maybe, Maybe Not' is one of the most odd movies I've ever seen. I liked it. I think I liked it because it is so completely different than all the American movies I'm used to seeing. In the beginning, the main character, Axel, decides to randomly have sex with some girl in the bathroom of his workplace. A woman in the next stall recognizes the key chain that dropped from one of the fornicating couple's clothes. She peeks over the stall to find her boyfriend of three years mindlessly humping another woman. She kicks him out of their apartment and throughout the rest of the movie he struggles with where to live. Initially he calls old girlfriends who all readily turn him away. Then he ends up at a `men's group' with a lot of gay guys. After that, he gets drunk at a party and goes home to sleep at one of their houses. This is when the gender preference battle begins. A lot of stereotypes were defied in this movie and I found that extremely refreshing. For example, it is commonly thought in American society that gay men are promiscuous, however in this movie, no homosexual sex is shown. There is one man-to-man kiss in the club and in another scene homosexual activity is inferred while watching slides but not directly shown on the screen. There are, however, two comparatively graphic heterosexual scenes. Another stereotype defied was the `effeminate gay men' stereotype. The main gay character, Norbert, didn't act effeminate at all, not even in drag. My favorite part of the movie however perpetuated and made fun of an existing stereotype - the stupid Stallone-loving straight guy. The guys in the movie theater were very intriguing. I thought they added welcome comic relief to an otherwise tense and dark movie.

cookie cutter failure
17 February 2003
While I was excited to see Jude Law and Joseph Fiennes in the same movie, `Enemy at the Gates' still managed to disappoint me both in plot and acting. This movie is another in the series of easily predictable cookie cutter `war/love' films to come out of Hollywood. Peppered with irrelevant metaphors of wolves and donkeys, I found myself laughing at the moments that were supposed to be serious. For example, Danilov says, `What we need is a hero.' Khrushchev sarcastically replies, `Do you know any heroes?' Danilov answers, `I know one.' Please, this scene happens in every movie. Naturally after that conversation, the camera moves to the main character, who is also the `hero' previously talked about. As for the romance, it was completely unnecessary. The romance was so forced. There were no sparks between Jude Law and Rachel Weisz. The love scene in the barracks was completely unbelievable as well as unpassionate. First, I thought it was totally lame that they make the girl start it especially if we're supposed to believe that she's a virgin. Second, she looked as if she were in pain during the whole sex part and if they were really in love, he would act like he cared instead of pounding away. Third, like the guy walking through wouldn't notice, let's get realistic here.

I personally think that I may have enjoyed the movie if Tania character were a guy or not in the movie at all. The love was not only forced, but was completely unnecessary and took away from the movie instead of making it better. Her character was a complete stereotype the `smart strong independent coy tomboy.' How she was going to be involved was so obvious and bland. I was relieved when she got shot, I thought there was going to be a plot twist, but alas she miraculously bounced back to perfect health in some random hospital. It was clear that the love part of the movie was in it because it was part of this equation that supposedly equals `good epic film.' Visually, I got pretty tired of the shaking and moving camera during fight scenes and scenes with sniper stuff. I know that it was supposed to create confusion and discomfort like the characters feel, but it didn't work for me for over two hours. I did however, really like the fonts that they used on screen in the beginning and again in the credits in the end. I think those parts were visually well done. The favorite part of the movie was the part with the map and the Nazi regime looking like black blood infesting Europe. I thought that was a great visual representation of what was happening at that time. The only scene that had any positive impact on me was the beginning when all the soldiers were being forced out of the train to battle to fight and most likely die. That scene was pretty well done but the blood explosions in slow motion were a little too much. This movie was trying to be a riveting `epic film' geared toward everyone with war and explosions for guys and love and `hot guys' for girls. With all these supposedly promising ingredients the film didn't work because there was no chemistry between Fiennes and Law or between Law and Weisz. This is a hard thing to not have because they were trying to portray these dramatic roles that were very heavy and serious but instead the acting and `love' scenes made me laugh instead of identify with them.

Incredible - Hilary Swank deserves that Oscar
10 January 2003
The whole movie is amazing I think that Hilary and Chloe both did a great job. The whole story is so sad so if you've not seen it, be prepared because some parts are very hard to watch. It is definitely a one-of-a-kind movie must see!

What a GREAT story!
8 January 2003
This movie has a great storyline and was perfectly cast. I loved Tom Hanks' accent! It wasn't completely obvious what was going to happen next like in a lot of other movies that come out. I had never heard of this guy and I think that it's a really cool story and I'm very glad they made a movie out of it. I gave it a 10 because it showed the story of this guys life in an entertaining and comic way without completely leaving out how hard certain parts of his life must've been. You NEED to see this movie

TOO LONG!
23 October 2002
This movie was too long and drawn out. It was unrealistic with bad acting on Leonardo DiCaprio's and Kate Winslet's part. I also found the dialog cheesy "I'm the king of the world?" it was exceedingly hard to sit through let alone take seriously and as a result I'm forced to give it a 1
