I Care a Lot (2020)
Surprised me... and I liked it.
Reading the dozens and dozens of 1 star reviews here, you'd think this movie is bad. It's not.
The character of Rosamund Pike, Marla is a swindler who works within the system, assuming guardianship of old people and their assets. She works with corrupt doctors and care facilities to drain the money off old folks.
She has no problem being the bad guy, In fact she believes it's the only way to get ahead in life. She has a nice thing going milking money off old people that is until she scams the wrong person.
Jennifer Peterson, on the outside seems like a lady who has retired rich, has no family who'd get in the way and is showing early signs of memory loss. But apparently, that's just a cover. She apparently is the mother of a former Russian mobster. Enter, the delightful, Peter Dinklage, Roman Lunyov ... who first sends a shady lawyer, Chris Messina, to pay off and when that doesn't work, threaten Marla to release his mother.
Marla is, well, "a Lioness" is not easily going to give up on a cash cow which leads to Roman employing increasingly deadly measures to get his mother.
Even though both are bad guys and not likable, I was rooting for Roman to win and get his mother. The ending surprises when Marla proves that she is a competent bad person and Roman ends up partnering with her, helping in expanding the guardianship scam.
And I'm glad that at the very end, there is comeuppance for her deeds. If that had not been there, I wouldn't have rated the movie so high.
History of Swear Words (2021)
Good mindless escape
I wasn't expecting much from it and I was pleasantly surprised. Nic Cage was pretty good anchoring the show. Episodes were crisp at just 20 minutes and they went into enough history without bogging down and making a boring history lesson.
Lootcase (2020)
Mindless Fun
A mindless fun movie that is very much needed in 2020.
Nandan Kumar, a hardworking guy with a wife and a child trying to make ends meet stumbles on a suitcase full of cash one night. He sneaks it home and starts enjoying the spoils of it.
Unknown to him, the suitcase was stashed there by a gang fleeing from the cops after a shootout and now two gangs are searching for it.
The movie doesn't take itself seriously and pretty much everyone in the movie is funny from the gang of criminals to the crooked cop.
Good acting with excellent comedic timing by the lead actors as well as the supporting cast.
Recommended for a relaxing evening.
Project Power (2020)
Entertaining Movie
If you look at the reviews of this movie around the web, you'd think that it's a bad movie. IGN gave it a 3/10 rating. It's not.
After the trailers I was excited about this movie because of the concept and the star cast behind it. The reviews around the web lowered my expectations. But it turned out to be quite interesting, the action, acting and set pieces are quite good and the movie flows quite well without a dull moment anywhere.
The Witcher (2019)
Not bad for season 1
I know about The Witcher because of the wildly popular game, The Witcher 3, Wild Hunt. Though I haven't played the game cause my system isn't powerful enough to play the game in full glory and I don't have the time for it. I suspect with a better system, I'd definitely make time for it.
All of this is to say that I don't know the world of Witcher going into this show and it's a complicated world full of monsters, Kingdoms, mages, laws and timelines. It's a bit difficult to wrap your head around and the show doesn't make it any easier especially with the storytelling across different timelines. The first few episodes can be confusing but stick around and things start getting clearer. The payoff for sticking around is around episode 7 where the timelines converge and you start to understand how things connect.
Now, even with those complications, the show is entertaining and enjoyable. All of the fight sequences involving Henry Cavill is damn fun, and is definitely the best part of the show. Henry Cavill has worked hard and it shows, the sword fights have real depth to it. The big scale war scenes are a bit lacking and cannot come anywhere near GOT. The show also gets campy and cheesy from time to time but overall it's a good season 1 and I'm excited to see where the show goes from here.
Kevin Hart: Irresponsible (2019)
It was actually good!
I watched the trailer for this Netflix special and thought it was going to be the same old thing and I wouldn't enjoy it but it was actually good, the material was new and it all came together nicely in the end.
Lolita (1997)
a perfect movie?
This is one of my favorite movies. I love everything about this movie - The story, characters, music, scenery etc. I have read Vladimir Nabokov novel and this movie is an almost excellent adaptation of the book. The movie has been so beautifully shot that it stays in your head long after you watch it. The relationship between Lolita and Humbert has been shown exactly as in the book. Humbert is obsessed with Lolita because he lost his lover when he was a teenager and he is always looking for her in other teenage girls. And Lolita was discovering her sexuality and had a desire to seduce Humbert who had feelings for her.
A beautifully written novel and a beautifully shot movie. Watch the movie and read the book. Go!
