The Rundown (2003)
The best of its kind.
"The Rundown" is hands-down the best buddy action/comedy ever made. These types of movies are often hit-or-miss. "Midnight Run" and "48 Hours" are great movies of this genre, but "The Rundown" surpasses both of them. The action scenes are incredible, and the dialogue will often make you laugh out loud. The cinematography in the movie is also pretty awesome. The one thing this movie does is prove to the world that the Rock is a legitamite star, who is capable of making great movies (and a MUCH better actor than Vin Diesel.) The way that he and Seann William Scott play off each other in this movie is something that all people will be able to appreciate. And as always, Christopher Walken is awesome. I would recommend that EVERYONE sees this movie. In my opinion, it was the best action movie to come out in 2003 (barely beating out Kill Bill Vol. 1). Do yourself a favor and see it.
Dreamcatcher (2003)
What the hell went wrong?
"Dreamcatcher" starts out with an interesting premise. There are four guys who have been friends since childhood. They all have some sort of psychic ability. Its unclear exactly what their ability is, and what the significance is, but this mysteriousness makes the movie more intriguing. As the story builds, the mysteriousness continues to grow. Kasdan does a great job in building suspense during this part of the movie, as I found myself really curious in trying to figure out what was going to happen next.
****SPOILER ALERT****
Anyway, out of nowhere, stupidity starts to run amok. More crap happens where there are alien snake things. Then all of a sudden the movie ends when the head alien fights with a friend of the main characters, who also happens to be an alien. Both aliens explode. The end.
I found myself wondering what the hell went wrong. The movie started out awesome, but then it turned into an alien movie with no motivation. I would go as far as to say that this is one of the worst movies of 2003. I would recommend that you watch the first hour of the movie, and then shut it off. Watching the entire movie will only make you feel disappointed.
Learning the Ropes (1988)
This show was awesome.
OK, so I guess it was a lame concept and had bad acting, but there was something about this show that I just absolutely loved. Seeing pro wrestlers talk about life lessons is just so incredibly entertaining. I assume I'm one of about 45 people who have ever even seen this show, but hopefully someday they will bring the few episodes that exist back on the air so that people can see this show first hand. As far as I'm concerned, "Learning the Ropes" should have been a staple in American culture.
I also would like to say that its a shame that Lyle Alzado is no longer with us. His acting may not have been up to par, but he did have a certain charm that made him fun to watch. I believe that his acting career may have gotten bigger had it not been for his untimely death.
Deuces Wild (2002)
The acting is poor, the story is tired..
"Deuces Wild" is one of the worst movies that I have seen in quite a while. It is basically a story of cliches taken from other (better) movies and thrown together to make this lame excuse for a movie. It is even more painful because it stars a bunch of second-rate actors trying to make this thing work. Not a single actor is even able to pull of a halfway decent Brooklyn accent, so how can they be expected to carry this awful script into a watchable movie? Exactly, they can't.
Do yourself a favor and avoid this movie at all costs. Watching it is a painful experience.
Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986)
I've seen worse, but this movie is horrible.
"Jumpin' Jack Flash" is an awful movie on many different levels. The story does not make sense, which kinda ruins the whole thing from the start. However, the thing that makes this movie truly horrible is the mistake made by the director and producers in thinking that Whoopi Goldberg can be funny. This movie did not get a single laugh out of me, and I'm still wondering whether the movie was even supposed to be funny.
Don't see "Jumpin' Jack Flash".
Bogus (1996)
Horrible movie, horrible cast
"Bogus" is seriously one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Whoopi Goldberg once again proves to be one of the poorest actresses of our time. The dialogue between her and Gerard Depardieu (who also can't act) attempts to be witty and funny, but it just sounds like contrived garbage. Please do yourself a favor and avoid the movie "Bogus". Luckily, I'm sure that most people did, otherwise I'd hear more complaining about what a horrible movie it is.
Sliding Doors (1998)
Good concept, poor execution
"Sliding Doors" is a mess of a film, but it gets points for attempting to be good. Exploring the idea of what would happen to one's life as a result of one little insignificant choice is a daring concept. However, the way the movie just jumps back and forth is often confusing. Also, neither story is very interesting, and the characters are boring and cliched. Paltrow does her best to carry this movie, but it just isn't enough. Do yourself a favor and avoid "Sliding Doors".
A Night at the Roxbury (1998)
Butabi Brothers + Richard Grieco = HILARITY!
Oh my god, this is one of the funniest movies ever made. The Butabi brothers, who are always funny as loser clubbers in the SNL skits, prove to be just as funny with their pathetic personal lives. The 80's references in this movie are a huge source of hilarity, with the zenith being Richard Grieco's role. ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE should see this movie as soon as possible, since it is by far one of the greatest I have ever seen.
Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993)
This is the worst movie EVER.
My God, this movie is horrible. Its not funny. Its not clever. Its not even original. Its just more Whoopi Goldberg getting shoved down our throats. I hope no one actually spent money to see this piece of trash. While I think the original "Sister Act" movie was actually decent, I can't believe that a movie this bad was actually made. Then again, I can't believe a lot of Whoopi's movies were actually made.
Burglar (1987)
What were they thinking?
Terrible. This is not a funny movie, nor is it an action movie. This movie just reeks of mediocrity. This movie was an early sign of how terrible Whoopi Goldberg can truly be. Luckily, I'm pretty sure most people avoided this movie from the start.
Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
Where's Sandler's Oscar?
Adam Sandler absolutely stole the show in "Punch-Drunk Love", which is one of the best movies I've seen in a LONG time. As small business owner Barry Egan, Sandler displayed more emotion than any character in recent history. I think Sandler deserved an Oscar, or at least a nomination, for his performance. Once again, the Academy shows its disrespect for comedies by not giving the film a single nomination. Hell, "Punch-Drunk Love" is the best original screenplay of last year, by far. Anyway, I would recommend that everyone see this movie. But I'm warning you- its an intelligent movie, so typical Sandler fans might be disappointed after seeing it.
Gerry (2002)
A Beautiful Film
This film has gotten panned by many, but it is one of the finest films I have ever seen. The images in this film are truly inspiring. The film has few lines of dialogue, but the dialogue offered is both smart and funny. I recommend seeing this film by yourself, and at a theater and time where there won't be many other people in the audience. It is not a movie you will want to discuss with friends, but more the type that you will want to just ponder and draw your own conclusions about. If you don't need explosions and one-liners to enjoy a movie, then definitely see this film.
Queen of the Damned (2002)
The vampires aren't the only things that suck...
This movie is terrible. It really had no plot, and no reason to ever be made. The acting was poor, but it didn't really matter. The movie could have starred Orson Wells and Katherine Hepburn and it still would have been one of the worst movies ever made.
If you want a good vampire movie, check out "Dracula" and "From Dusk 'Til Dawn". Hell, even the Leslie Nielsen movie "Dracula: Dead and Loving It" is a masterpiece compared to this garbage. Trust me, do not see this movie.
Snow Day (2000)
I want to cry.
This is a movie? Did people actually pay to see this? This movie is an insult to the mind of even the stupidest child. I would like to add that I enjoy such kids movies as "Dunston Checks In" and "Good Burger", but still couldn't even still through this whole pile of garbage. Do not see "Snow Day".
Dunston Checks In (1996)
The definitive monkey movie
This is one of the finest films I have ever seen. Jason Alexander, Faye Dunaway, and Rupert Evert are all brilliant actors who make this thing work. Paul Reubens puts in a hilarious performance as the crazy animal control specialist La Farge. I guarantee than anyone who sees this movie will laugh from start to finish at all the monkey-mayhem created by Dunston, the lovable but mischievous orangutan. Everyone should see this movie.
Friday (1995)
I LOVE Friday!
"Friday" is a hilarious movie which I recommend that everybody see. Ice Cube and Chris Tucker form one of the greatest on-screen duos in recent history. John Witherspoon, Tiny Lister, and Nia Long are all great in supporting roles that make this movie the complete work that it is.
Me, Myself and I (1989)
Awful, Agonizing, and Painful
I don't know exactly what this movie is supposed to be, but its truly a horrible thing to watch. Its supposed to be a look into the life of Corey Haim, but the crew tells him exactly what to do and say. And yes, they actually show the crew doing this.
