Tin Star (2017)
Well Worth Watching
Although I am only on season one, I must say that this is well worth watching. Genuinely creepy and scary. In fact, I found that I couldn't watch it before I went to sleep! I think Tim Roth does a brilliant job as the tortured police chief. While the plot sometimes leaves me behind, I will stay with it because I think this is so well done. Of course, it's not Line of Duty or Luther but still, characters I care about.
Nope (2022)
Another M. Night Shyamalan path?
Long ago, I felt compelled to see each of them. M. Night Shyamalan pictures. I was so impressed with the first one that I just knew all the rest would be equally superior. I was wrong to go down that path and I think I have begun to do it again with Jordan Peele. Adored Get Out! So naturally, I was eager to see the follow up movie which I felt only lukewarm about and yet, that special ending so I figured I would rush to see NOPE. I was wrong. A muddled plot at best, hard to it understand the dialogue except for Palmer, and I kept waiting for the marvelous special effects I read about here on IMDb. Even when the credits rolled! Some of the special effects look like they were right out of the 1950s. My husband wanted to leave at the halfway point but I insisted we stay because I just knew it would get better. It did not. Save your money. I think I will now have to skip the next movie Peele comes out with.
You Don't Know Me (2021)
I loved the ending!
Because I loved the ending, I upped my rating from 7 to 9. I found the entire four part series very intense and eminently watchable. By the time the ending had arrive, it really caught me off guard and though I've seen it done before, it was not what I was expecting for this series. Definitely, definitely will worth watching!
Paranoid (2016)
A train wreck by last episode
Wow this limited series started off fine, by the end, to me, it was a bit of a puddle mess. Or a train wreck. Plots and sub plots going nowhere, a waste of talent despite two of my favorites, Neil Stuke and Danny Houston, being in it. By the last episode, I gave up caring about characters who had seemed so promising in the beginning.
Elvis (2022)
Ehhhhh!
Really looked forward to the Elvis biopic but ultimately found it ehhh. Austin Butler was really terrific. He nailed the performance. Tom Hanks was another story. At first I couldn't understand why his speech was so garbled and difficult to understand but then when I got home, I looked up Colonel Tom Parker. He was neither a colonel nor an American. He was a Dutch citizen. Even though he shaped Elvis and his career, ultimately it led to his downfall. Elvis, that is.
The Black Phone (2021)
Does not disappoint!
A delightfully scary, creepy movie that does not disappoint. Reminded me of a teenage version of some thing like SAW and also a wee bit of Silence of the Lambs. The kid actors really nailed their parts and a well written script, too.
Men (2022)
Worst Ever!
I have been going to the movies as long as I can remember, since I was 10 years old or younger. And I must say, after having seen this one, this is possibly the very worst movie I have ever seen! I don't mind a movie that's fraught with symbolism, or ones that seemingly don't make sense either. I like experimental flicks. But this one from beginning to end made absolutely no sense and furthermore, the fact that anyone could get it made and shown in commercial release is just mind-boggling.
The Chelsea Detective (2022)
Slow Moving
The dialogue is crisp and the acting is fine. So what's the problem? Rather slow moving for me. I prefer my detective or police shows more intense or at least the plot that draws me immediately. This did not. May get back to it later but probably won't. Too bad, because I highly anticipated the arrival of this series.
19-2 (2014)
Gritty
I like my cop series intense, procedural and British but this show is eminently watchable. Characters nicely drawn. Music that doesn't intrude, like Keeping Faith, and except for the sex which diverts from good storylines, I am really enjoying it after having completed Season 1.
Back to the Rafters (2021)
Ehh
Agree that I, too, am missing many of the original gang including Jake, Coby etc. In the original series, I found that some characters grew on me but, alas, not the much loved Julie who gave new meaning to passive-aggressive. And for goodness sake, get a hairstyle! Or a comb! Missing the original Rachel, too. Only one episode into Back and yes, Ruby does seem beyond precocious.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
Overrated
Yes, a huge winner at the Emmys and everyone on imdb in love with it...but not me, not so much. Too many over-the-top performances. mugging for the camera, repetitious plots...shall I go on? Yes, a couple standout performances, mostly the Schitt kids, but I have seen funnier, laugh out loud series on Prime or Netflix than this one. Fleabag, Mrs. Maisel, others. Sorry to be in the minority here but that's the way it goes.
Emily in Paris (2020)
Valentine to Paris
Dismayed to watch the (mostly French based) negative reviews of this adorable Valentine to Paris. It *is* part Sex/City and part Devil/Prada but with the adorable star and her terrific wardrobe, wow this frothy comedy took me right back to my own single adventures (alas, stateside) and how lovely it was to be young and game for anything! To the meanies, stop finding what's wrong with the series and find what's so sweet, a perfect antidote to all the crime dramas on Netflix and all the scary virus stuff in reality. Well done, Darren and Lily!!
The Pale Horse (1997)
Don't Listen to the Naysayers
I think those who despised this mini series must be Agatha Christie purists. I've never read her; don't care much for mysteries though I know she is revered. So I went into this brief series with low expectations and did n-o-t feel it was the trainwreck others had. Love Sewell in everything so that was a plus. Even liked the ending. It was watchable, perhaps because it reminded me a bit of Wicker Man or just for whatever reason...I did not hate it, nope not at all.
Sid and Nancy (1986)
Jaw dropping intensity
I just managed to see this movie on tv last nite, 17 years after it came out! I was drawn into the plot immediately. Can't remember having seem a movie as 'raw', with such jaw dropping intensity, since Trainspotting. Fabulous performances by Oldman and Webb. His rendition of "My Way" totally unforgettable; her portrayal of Spungen hugely annoying, which is what is was meant to be!
House of Sand and Fog (2003)
Gut wrenching, jaw dropping performance
Ben Kingsley, in a gut wrenching, jaw dropping performance as the Colonel, has seldom been better. And I mean my jaw *was* dropping in the last 10 minutes. A bit slow moving, nevertheless the cast is excellent and could it be that only 1 Golden Globe nomination was given? This is on par with Cold Mountain and Mystic River to take on Lord of the Rings at Oscar time. Just home the Academy sees it my way!
Angels in America (2003)
To be taken in small doses
While trying to watch Angels via 2, 3 hour segments, I found it to be just too much. Too odd, too weird. And believe me, I *like* unusual movies, arthouse movies, etc. Then I found that if I watched the re-runs, an hour at a time, I found it thoroughly riveting. So this is a production which is best viewed in smaller doses. Though I think the production might've been more relevant 20 years ago, the performances were stellar nonetheless, especially Pacino, Wright, Parker. And the others, too! So, for those of you who might say this program isn't for you, give it another try -- in small doses, like the doctor ordered. You won't be sorry!
The Ring (2002)
Deliciously creepy
I've been watching and reading horror for more years than I care to remember. I don't scare easily. No nightmares from Silence of the Lambs, none of that (okay, the book Red Dragon, same author, was verry scary). I found The Ring to be deliciously creepy, dark, moody, plot twists and turns and quite impossible to forget. A true horror flick!
21 Grams (2003)
Too much of the old 'back and forth'
A terrific cast and well acted but too much of the old back and forth. Ala Memento, which I did not like at all. You will view scenes at the beginning that won't begin to make sense til the end. That's the way the whole movie went. At one point (and I go to the movies a lot!) I began to wonder 'who' Sean Penn's wife was! Generally, I love the 'smaller' movie, the indies, the arthouse type. And 21 Grams generated much buzz. But I didn't leave the theatre feeling like I'd seen a great one. Note to myself:Stop seeing Sean Penn movies for awhile. After this one, and Mystic River, I need a bit less intensity:)
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
Who could resist this movie?
Who could possibly resist this movie? Although the ending is a bit of a stretch, Richard Curtis has written a brilliantly charming script and the cast is wonderful. My favorite scene is the richly textured, Scottish wedding. As far as wedding movies go...and wedding flicks are the only 'fluff' movies I like...this is far, far superior to My Best Friend's Wedding. It's a feel good movie with intelligence, a rarity today.
Thirteen (2003)
Edgy, raw flick
I, nearly a senior who loves arthouse movies, saw this last night with my 25 year old niece. We both loved it, if you can love a movie so raw and edgy...like an open wound. While the concept sounds like it a made for tv, movie of the week sort of presentation, it was far from it. The only flaw? Shouldn't be written about the teen's descent into drugs *and* sex...because there was very little of the latter. Never mind, though. Seems like I didn't exhale until it was over. Very intense and well worth seeing. Not for the faint of heart.
28 Days Later... (2002)
Love/Hate
28 Days Later is the kind of movie where you simultaneously think it's brilliant and yet not. The beginning was way too slow in setting the scene, which I disliked. In the first 5 minutes I figured what was happening and have seen those 'wandering the streets' scenes before in On The Beach. Then it did borrow heavily from Omega Man whereas I thought it'd be more Night of the Living Dead. There were many disturbing scenes. When the group I was with left the theater, it was, like, "what the heck was that?" Yet, undeniably thought provoking, nightmarish, and quite well done.
