Head of State (2003)
Plotless but fun
This movie is not going to win any awards, but it was fun nonetheless. Chris Rock, as always, was hilarious, and Bernie Mac chewed the scenery in every scene that he was in. The plot sort of fell apart about 3/4 of the way through as certain story threads were dropped or passported over, but I didn't really mind because I was having such a blast. Obviously not a serious film--just mindless entertainment and some good laughs.
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist (2002)
Better than the preview
Although this film does basically retread ground already broken when Woody Allen debuted `What's Up, Tiger Lily?', audiences unfamiliar with the technique of melding old Hong Kong movies with modern soundtracks and in this case actors might find this movie to be a departure from the usual slapstick "Naked Gunn" type movies. Unfortunately, this movie was promoted as "Naked Gunn-esque" in the trailer, turning away many moviegoers (including myself). While a good deal of the humor is puerile, there are some really inspired bits that are worth checking out now that it is available on video.
I'm with Lucy (2002)
Cute fluff
I originally wanted to see this movie because I am a Boreanaz fan, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by this little flick. The story was cute, Lucy was likeable and no Mary Sue, and her suitors were all decent yet human. This movie won't win any awards, but is a fun popcorn night in with the buds kinda film. Enjoyable.
Blue Crush (2002)
girl power my a$$
SPOILER OK--I was actually looking forward to this movie because I thought that a) it would be fluff and b) it would have a cool message like "girls kick ass". I came away pretty disgusted that the main character took money with the understanding that she would have sex with the football player. Hello--why else would she go up to his room to get the money? She sold herself. What kind of message is that? Even when she called him out for his penchant for "slumming" with waitresses and maids, he never apologized for his actions. And...she stayed with him until the end! Are you kidding?
