American Wedding (2003)
crap
SPOILER!!!! I don't understand how any film maker could let it slide. I don't understand how any producer could let it go. I don't understand how any audience member could accept it.....WHY DID A**HOLE STIFLER GET THE GIRL IN THE END??? That doesn't make any sense! Poor Finchy gets treated to an ending almost exactly like the one in Pie 2!! Stifler's mom shows up out of nowhere and gives him a happy(?)cop-out ending??? Am I the only one that wanted Finch to get the girl?
What does this teach the horny teenage boys watching? The bigger prick you are the more likely you'll be to get the girl? And "apparently" young women are too stupid to see through this! Insulting all around.
Next...why wouldn't Jim use the garbage for his trimmings? Does he also cross an entire other room to throw other bathroom "refuse" out the window? I get that it wouldn't be a joke without the window...it was just poorly thought out... The first American Pie movie was fun. The second more of the same, but okay....the third was INSULTING CRAP!!
Withnail and I (1987)
Not just a cult classic...a classic - period.
I have a film poster of Withnail & I that has such critical quotes as "Hilarious!" and "Gloriously funny!" and I can't say I totally agree. Don't get me wrong...I loved this film and it remains one of my favorites of all time, I just think these quotes sell the movie as some kind of Monty Python romp...and it's much more than that. I did laugh throughout, but I was also touched and found it quite sad (in a very entertaining way.) I would like to think that this is what Bruce Robinson intended...to make a dramedy...not just a silly romp. Though perhaps a bit slow for some, I thought the pace was remarkable, the acting superb. I have also heard people say that they found the plot lacking...but I argue that sometimes it's just nice to sit back and get swept away by a good character study. Interesting and thought provoking, sometimes referred to as a "cult classic", I say it's just a classic - period. Oh...and great soundtrack. The closing music always gives me goosebumps.
Wet Hot American Summer (2001)
Refreshingly silly fun.
It is rare these days to see a comedy that makes me laugh as hard as I did with Wet Hot American Summer. It has such an absurd nature, but still grounds itself. It's one of those movies that you have fun watching because you can tell they had fun making it. It has also made me a fan of Michael Showalter, whom I had never seen before this. I could watch this movie over and over and still laugh...as I said - rare quality these days. Oh, and weird..."Cure Girl" looks just like my wife did when she was in high school...we have nicknamed Cure Girl "'lil Kim."
Waterland (1992)
One of the most underrated films of all time.
I found Waterland to be a great example of how to film an almost unfilmable book. I found it extremely moving in it's storytelling, and the fact that it came and went so quickly (in Toronto anyway) a tragedy...it deserved more.
