Kurenai no buta (1992)
Good film, but not one of my favorite Miyazaki films
I first bought the film because of the strange picture on the DVD case and because I am a huge Miyazaki fan that guy is a genius! I enjoyed the movie a lot. The animation, music, voice acting, and story are all very unique. However I would say that overall this is my least favorite Miyazaki film. Not to say that it was bad, it really was not. Its worth watching but it does not meet the high standard he has set for himself, in my opinion. Even the worst thing Miyazaki could possibly make will still be much better than other anime because he is simply light years ahead of most other anime creators/directors. In conclusion I gave this film an 8/10 because it was enjoyable and creative, but is not his best work.
Troll 2 (1990)
So bad that its good?
Troll 2 is simply one of the worst films (in my opinion) that has ever been made. But is it so terrible that its good? Depending on how you choose to view it, the movie can be an unbearable pain, or a hilarious comedy. Everything, every single aspect of the film is far below average. But this can also be ingredients to getting a good laugh.
This means though that you can expect sets, actors, lines, music, effects, costumes, and camera work that reeks of incompetence. I cannot, literally cannot imagine trying to make a serious film and having it turn out like that. Sure I could make a purposefully poor film that may be comparable with Troll 2, but without a lot of intent. I wonder if the creators of this film had some.....issues, that is the only logical explanation I can fathom.
If you choose to take Troll 2 seriously then this film will feel like torture, and by the ending your brain will have reduced itself to mush. I really enjoy watching poorly made films to laugh at them, so this movie was very enjoyable to me.
Rain Man (1988)
A good film with a bad reputation
Personally I enjoyed the film a lot. But many people especially in the autistic community believe that the movie promotes stereotypes about the autistic spectrum. And for people who do not do any research and assume too many things, yes this is indeed the case. "Rain Man" is very accurate in depicting the specific autistic savants Raymond Babbitt is based after, but this does not mean that he encompasses the traits and behaviors of all autistic people. Savant syndrome is a very rare condition (especially prodigious savants, which is what Raymond Babbitt would be classified as if he were real), so that is something to keep in mind. I thought Dustin Hoffman's portrayal of an autistic savant was simply brilliant. But make sure before watching it that you understand that it is JUST A MOVIE and not a documentary on all autistic people! The film is truly remarkable though no matter what people will tell you.
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (1989)
Delightfully Bad
As a person who enjoys watching poorly made productions for fun sometimes, this show was fantastic. The cheesy script, set, costumes, music, and animation will leave you stunned until the end. Sometimes it almost crosses the boarder between "good-bad" and simply "bad-bad" but quickly returns to its "good-bad" side. This show is not recommended for marathon viewings however, due to the mass destruction of brain cells that can occur, so it is suggested that people watch only 1-2 episodes per day to be safe. I would recommend this show to anyone who, like me, enjoys laughing at poorly made productions because that is the only use you will get out of it. Personally I enjoyed it quite a bit.
