Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
It's a kind of magic
Thankfully I never pay much attention to film critics and in the case of Bohemian Rhapsody how they get it so wrong. Yes the timelines have been manipulated for dramatic effect and yes some of the story is factually incorrect, but it doesn't detract from what is possibly the best film of the year. Bohemian Rhapsody hits its peaks and troughs with perfect precision and the performance across the board are a master class in naturalism. I can't recommend this film enough and will be seeing it again and again.
Under the Radar (2004)
Hit the spot
Yeah, this film is a blend of Momento and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, but I'm yet to see a completely original film that hasn't borrowed something from another film. Under the Radar takes these themes and makes them its own. The actors do a top notch job and the director handles this well written piece with pace and style. Evan Clarry and Steve Pratt have managed to weave together the multiple genres seamlessly in a form that keeps us guessing right to the end. The locations across the Gold Coast look stunning and are well utilized and the surfing sequences take you face first into the waves. The stunts are big for a low to mid budget film, but it looks and feels anything but low budget. In my opinion this is one little Aussie gem that has truly slipped; Under the Radar. Steady Eddy - Keep on shaking'. You owned the screen with a great first time performance.
The World's Fastest Indian (2005)
A supercharged zimmer-frame
I went into this film with zero expectations and came out absolutely satisfied. This is Rocky for the aged. It shows us that there is no age limit in following your dreams and it does it with style, grace and flair.
Roger Donaldson tells the story without allowing the directorial style to overshadow, what is, an inspiring story of one mans journey to become the fastest man on two, albeit, shaky, wheels.
Burt Monro's dogged determination and single minded obsession take him across the globe from Invercargill, New Zealand to Boneville, Utah, USA, where he takes on the clock and himself, but in this story it is not the destination that matters, it's the journey.
A first rate film and a tribute to it's star, Director, and above all, Burt Monro.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Saving the best for last
Firstly I've got to say the first two were disappointing, but that view is tainted by the imagery and larger than life characters of the originals (Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi) I geared myself up for the sixth episode by going back and watching Phantom Menace & Attack of the Clone. The second time through was a much better experience. These two films stand alone and do a great job of foreshadowing Darth Vaders birth.
It was interesting watching the doco on Hitler: The Rise of Evil on DVD and then going to Sith. The similarities in character development are quite profound and mirror each other (I wonder George, is this where Darth was birthed?) Revenge of the Sith is a fast paced, perfectly structured, piece of cinematic history. It weaves seamlessly together with its 70s predecessors and answers all of the questions we have all been asking.
Go and see this film despite what you thought of the first two: You'll be glad you did.
Now I just need to see Romero's 'Land of the Dead' and I'll be a happy film buff.
Bubba Ho-Tep (2002)
Elvis Presley and JFK battle an ancient Egyptian butt sucker in a bid to save the old folk in their retirement village.
This is one of the most refreshingly original films I have seen in a long time. The collectors edition DVD is crammed full of extra goodies and the commentary from Bruce Campbell is brilliant.
It is well shot, particularly the speed ramped, passage of time scenes, in Elvis' room, while he waits for death to take him. The whole retirement village is like 'Gods waiting room'
Aussie Davis appears and we discover that he is John F Kennedy, dyed black by the CIA to hide him after the assassination "Attempt", part of his brain is still connected to a machine in the White-House, and he now has a small sandbag filling the void.
I would have liked to have seen more of Bubba Ho-Tep, the mummy, and seen him dispatched in a much more spectacular fashion, but the film is low budget and has financial constraints to deal with.
Both actors give solid performances & Bruce Campbell deserves an Oscar for his portrayal of the King. This is his best work to date. But I could just be thinking through sand here :-)
See this film no matter what and watch out for asshole suckers, baby.
It is available on DVD through Amazon. "Thank you. Thank you very much"
The King is dead, baby! Long live the King!
