Northfork (2003)
i LOVED this film!
i agree that this is one of those love it or leave it films. however, i fall into the LOVE it category by the way, its his deceased wife not his mother that james woods is concerned about.......
allegory runs rampant in this film and if you liked BRAZIL, CITY OF LOST CHILDREN, or WINGS OF DESIRE then this is your kind of film.
a quiet film but a thinkers film. sit back and let it roll over you. don't try to analyze, just experience. then discuss it with a friend and/or loved one to explore its texture.
Dark Blue (2002)
wow! was i ever surprised!
wow! was i ever surprised!
first i should let you know i am 1-not a kurt russell fan , 2-i was not impressed with the previews, and 3-i was not going to see this film until i read a short review by my favorite reviewer: richard von busack.
ok, having said that, i have to say this is great film. DARK BLUE is a film in the tradition of CHINATOWN and L.A. CONFIDENTIAL brought up to date with an in the street detective who is a trusted member of the "inner circle" of the SIS unit. it is set in a time period most of us will not soon forget: rodney king acquittal and subsequent riots. i found all the characters to be believable...and was simply amazed at kurt russell's acting: scenes where the action is all taking place in his face, especially in his eyes, reverberate for me.
i walked into the theatre expecting to be disappointed. what a pleasant surprise to find a well acted, well written, and well directed movie. what more could one ask for?!
The Hours (2002)
acting is superb at all levels!
had i seen this film prior to december 31, 2001, it would have been
on my top 10 of the year! the comments by lou-50 of Houston,Texas pretty much says it all in a nut shell.
i do think this is a "woman's film" and i won't apologize for using
the term. i see nothing wrong about a film being made for and
about women. and this is one of the best yet!
Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002)
must see for any music lover
i've always loved the motown sound but like the rest of the world, i
took the musicians for granted and only paid attention to the
singer. over the years i became aware that what i had liked as a
child was the "sound" which was, of course, the musicians. the
"sound" was the common denominator of all the songs i loved and
remember but i never did take the time to research just who these
people were/are.
i loved this movie! a trip down memory lane and a real tribute to
great musicians who have never received the recognition they so
much deserved and so much craved. like BUENA VISTA SOCIAL
CLUB, this movie serves to document rock 'n roll history and allow
these fine musicians a chance to strut their stuff. i can only hope
that someone will organize a tour and said tour plays some where
near me. it was all i could do to keep from jumping up and
dancing in the isle during the screening. those involved with this
film deserve a lot of credit for not merely recording these men but
allowing us to see them as real people.
The Good Thief (2003)
not for the average movie goer
i belong to a film club in san jose, california and was fortunate enough to see this film at our october, 2002 event. the event was even better because rt [the director] was there in the flesh for q&a.
this is a thinking persons film. lots of metaphor and use of older movie techniques. while the film may be flawed and overly ambitious, it really is the story of one man's journey towards absolution.
the director made this film for himself. if you like it, ok; if you don't that's ok too. what's important is that rt really did think this fillm through....but you might not know that if you had not heard him discuss the film. each scene was deliberately set up, actors kept from one another until their scenes, etc.
this is an excellent start for a first time feature director. i look forward to his future features. i agree with rt that those that don't like this film now will one day look at his work as a body and then say "now i get it" or more importantly "now i get him".
i like this film hence the rating. it probably won't ever get a release...never was rt's intention...but will play film festivals. go see it with an open mind and heart: think about sin, good v. bad, redemption and absolution. nothing is concrete in a metaphor....
The Ring (2002)
great film!
ok, so i haven't seen the "original"....but this is one fine crafted film.
i don't think i've ever seen urban legend so very well portrayed on
the screen. i'd go so far as to say this is a don't miss film.
although this is not the scariest film i've ever seen, i certainly did
get goose bumps a couple of times. additionally, i enjoyed this
film because the lead character is a very strong female.
i'd suggest going to this film without having read too much about it.
don't spoil it for yourself. just go and enjoy the ride!
The Banger Sisters (2002)
could've been great
this is an interesting story that could have been great. as it was, it was merely an interesting piece of hollywood fluff. flawed fluff at that but the soundtrack was a trip down memory lane. all in all, i still enjoyed the film if for nothing else than for watching hawn, sarandan, and rush. its easy to sit back and watch such a movie if you have no expectations.
Moonlight Mile (2002)
each to their own
saw this movie today and must say i thought the story line was very interesting. however, the acting wasn't particularly noteworthy. sarandan was the only bright note in this all star cast. highlight of the movie was hearing the stone's "moonlight mile"....
Satin Rouge (2002)
i loved this film
great coming of age film about a middle aged woman who finds out that she has a lot of life in her and to live. and i loved the sound track!
the comment has been made that the first half of the film was slow but i just found it very "french". however, the 2nd half of the film was not edited nearly as well.
its good to see a film in which older women are portrayed as sensually desirable!
Whale Rider (2002)
WOW! this is a must see film!
i too was lucky to be in the 2nd world screening anywhere of this film at tiff 2002 and hear Sam Neal [who is not in the film] praise the director and thank her for making this film. there was a definite tremble in his voice as he thanked her "from the bottom of my heart". we've all seen this story before. generational power struggle, changing mores, etc. what makes this film "sing" is the unaffected acting of the young lead. the cast is super but the performance of this first time actor is simply amazing. filmed on location with local tribes people [including the young actor] this is one great way for a tribe to leave a legacy and educate the world at large at the same time. this is a don't miss film!
