La pivellina (2009)
After the screening at the Toronto International Film Festival
I've heard from someone that this movie was a hidden gem. At the screening, the theatre was maybe about half full, probably not even. But there's definitely something about the movie that I simply cannot let go. The feeling lingers. The movie is actually not about the two-year old baby, but it's about the people who live in the trailers. There's no acute dramatic elements in this film but it leaves you with a subtle melancholy. The audience is exposed again and again to their substandard yet noble way of life and the presence of the two-year old baby merely accentuates it. The characters seem at ease with their trailer lives but what makes them really noble is that they do not want that kind of lives for the children. Their compassion is evident throughout the movie and that's what makes the movie so touching. The ending leaves you a little bewildered at first. But it does make sense because the movie is about the people who live in the trailer park and not really about the baby. The movie definitely goes slow but it's worth a watch.
Red Team (1999)
Inadvertent fun ride.
Red team (aka Crimson Code) is a memorable movie for its astonishing comedy, of course that wasn't intended. They must have had a doozy of a time pondering whether they should turn it into a comedy or not. I won't explain any plot in this movie. As far as I'm concerned, its plot is elementary and nonsensical. Besides, it doesn't play any role in this movie. The star of this movie is its effort at trying to be a thriller. It tries so hard with the rock music they have going on in the background and some actions scenes (which by the way is hilarious). In the course of the movie, if you notice how absurd it truly is, you'll start enjoying it because you'd only be a fool to criticize the movie; it is endless parade of ridiculous scenes one after another. AND that's alright because they are what make the movie watchable. I've laughed so much watching this movie. I can't believe I'm saying this but I've enjoyed this movie.
Carrie (1976)
Horror movie that isn't so horrible.
The movie "Carrie" has an excellent reputation as an horror movie. It's been selected as one of the best horror movies of all time by some British people and its sequel has been made after almost thirty years. So, when I started watching it, it was with great anticipation and a blanket to hide in the unbearable scenes.
But you know what? Carrie is not scary at all. Except the last ten minutes and a couple of scenes in the beginning, the story is told as if it were some kind of a Cinderella story. I was watching it with a couple of ten-year-old kids in my house, and I had to literally scream at them to stop asking when it was going to get scary. They were a little scared when Carrie was using her supernatural powers covered in pig's blood, but not too scared. On the other hand, I found myself enjoying the romantic sentiments of the movie; I know I shouldn't but I did. If you take out the last part of the movie, you've got yourself a nice ugly duckling story. I wonder why the movie was made as horror and not a romantic comedy. It's basically what this movie is about for most of the time. Also there are some religious references that might offend some of the viewers.
In conclusion, it's a unworthy horror movie. In fact, it's an unworthy movie. If you're trying to catch a horror flick, just pick any other horror movie instead of this one. You won't miss very much. I promise. 2/10
Akage no An (1979)
Absolutely amazing adaption of the novel.
I never realized that this animation was made in 1979. I watched this series, every single episode, when I was ten. And let me just say that this animated series is incredible. It captures every emotion the novel delivers, from Anne's first depth of despair to last bend around the corner. Anne's chatters, Marilla's scornful love, Matthew's unconditional love, the rivalry romance between Anne and Gilbert, they are all there. It does not miss out anything, and I do mean anything. It is truly a masterpiece. The characters are drew beautifully, especially Anne and Gilbert. And the sceneries are breathtaking. You would never imagine this was made in 1979 if you saw it for yourself. And the music. Oh, the music is also just incomparable. The music will be remembered for such a long time. This series is incomparable to Anne of Green Gables animation series that's being made these days. If you have access to this animation, give it a chance. Just one episode and you'll fall in love with it forever.
