The Man Who Saw Tomorrow (1981)
These are but shadows of what may be
I think its important to note that when you make literally thousands of predictions, some of them will certainly occur. That said, every prediction Nostradamus made is open to numerous and varied interpretations. As we move toward whatever future may be for us, there will always be those who will see something in a quatrain that strikes them as similar enough to think, "AHA! He got it right!". When you watch this movie, keep in mind that several of the more popular quatrains have been applied to multiple events at various times through history, always with the "AHA!" moment in the minds of the interpreters. There have understandably been those people who, acting in their own devious interests, have manufactured events specifically to resemble predictions, knowing that men who believe events will unfold a certain way, will work to ensure they do, even to their own detriment. Keep in mind, Nostradamus' own disclaimer: "the One who is reasonable can learn from my prophecies how to find the right path to take as if he would have found footprints in the sand from someone who has gone before." The future IS ours to choose. Our future may be predetermined, but its predetermined by our choices each day.
Doin' Time on Planet Earth (1988)
I loved this movie. I hope they'll release it on DVD.
From the normal teen who thinks he's abnormal to the point that his exploration of his "strangeness" makes him strange, to the truly strange couple who are convinced he is their leader from another world.
Its a sci-fi, comedy and, though the humor is subtle, it is very enjoyable.
Adam West was in top form as the real leader of the "alien" earthlings, and the nightclub singer was hilarious as he belted out the most ridiculous songs as if they were top ten hits. I think the subtlety of the humor might actually be what attracts me most to it.
Definitely worth watching again and again.
The Last Airbender (2010)
I loved the cartoons and the movie did not let me down
I loved this movie. I'm not sure what people thought was going to happen when 20 episodes of the series were condensed down into a one hour forty-three minute movie. If you cannot watch the movie as being apart from the series you shouldn't be watching the movie. It was beautifully done. The elements Shyamalan was able to bring into this movie were amazing. The action scenes well choreographed. The 3d technology made the panoramas breathtaking. The acting could have been better but I've seen few movies that was not true of. If you see this movie, see it as a movie and not as a remake and you should come away more than satisfied.
Skins (2007)
One of the best skin flicks you'll ever see
I started watching it for Mitch Hewer. And he is certainly worth watching it but once I began, I couldn't stop. The story is so powerful. You are quickly drawn into the lives of a group of friends struggling with issue we all face at one time or another and solving them in the most beautifully scripted ways I have ever experienced in a single series. The philosophy, the drama, the humor, the tragedy, the romance. You get the feeling Shakespeare has been reborn. Whoever scripted this series, keep him. No-one else could ever begin to equal his brilliance. I can only hope the new cast is directed and written as brilliantly as this one was. If not, it won't be the same show.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
You should see the original first (may be spoilers)
Although I understand what the director was reaching for here, he fell far short of his goal. I hate it when directors rely on CGI and limit dialogue. The CHANGE that people go through when faced with ultimate disaster does not happen as suddenly as it did repeatedly in this movie. From the first shot through the entire movie all transitional indicators were missing. You didn't feel the apprehension that led to that initial shot. You didn't witness the turmoil of the boy as realization of his error in judgment set in.
I hope that these scenes were shot and simply did not survive the editing. If so we may see them in the director's cut.
The original movie was much more hopeful and emotionally charged than this one by a long shot.
