Interesting premise, editing could be better
13 August 2023
The show is good in terms of its subject matter. This is not a reality show where things are scripted. Sure, there are reactions that are re-recorded and such, but the actual subject matter is not scripted. The weirdness of the situation is the real deal. It is really fascinating to see UAPs captured on camera, sometimes on demand.

I removed two points for two reasons:

1. The team needs to write research papers and release all its data. The TV show should be the afterthought, not the primary way data is released to the public. Also, it's obvious that Travis knows and understands more than what he lets out.

2. The editing needs to be less cringe and repeat itself less. This is a serious subject, and the editing needs to reflect that.

Overall though, fascinating.

Too episodic for my taste
23 February 2023
This is just episodic television, it reminded me of the series in the '80s and '90s, with the new murderer of the week. I don't like episodic television because it doesn't get to the main point. Instead, it makes it unrealistic that this person would stumble on new murderers every few days. I stopped watching after the 2nd episode, watched 15 minutes of the third, and that's it. Never again.

For such a series to keep me invested it should have been an intricate play of plot and of her abilities, a mystery in a complex web of casino underground actors. Instead, they serve us different stories every week, that have nothing to do with each other. Not a fan of that format at all.

The Happening (2008)
9/10
Great film - most reviewers missed the point
1 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I am dumbfounded. 90% of the reviews and comments about M. Night Shyamalan's "The Happening" movie are negative. I personally loved the film!

The problem is that viewers (including critics, from what it seems) don't think hard. They thought that the message of the movie was "nature taking revenge on humanity -- be kind to the environment". And so by having plants releasing toxins to kill people, viewers found that plot ridiculous. While the nature stuff is the visible "message" of the movie (and it's not even proven in the movie that nature was the culprit, it's just the No1 suspect), it also had a second message that could only be seen if you look at the signs the director gives you. And that message is "don't be lonely, don't fear to love, trust others".

The director masterfully starts the movie in Central Park, and we later see that "the happening" is happening in the metropolitan area, which is where millions of people live. As the movie progresses, the heroes find themselves to smaller and smaller groups of people. In fact, through their panic, they start to think that the smaller the group they belong to (and lonelier they can be), the safer it is. But as we will see later with Mrs Jones' death, this is not necessarily true.

Tell-tale signs about the "loneliness" message in the film is when Julian says "don't hold my daughter's hand unless you mean it", the ring that changes colors depending on the emotion of the person that wears it (do we need a device to tell us what we feel?), and it's very clear when it shows how lonely modern people are when the two heroes are communicating via the sound tube (which is a separative kind of communication).

Only when they overcome their loneliness and fears, start to trust each other, get together and show true love to each other, they become unaffected from the toxin. Mrs Jones died because, even if she was alone in the field and therefore shouldn't have been affected, she had such a poisonous mind that she didn't feel love for anyone. She was the epitome of loneliness. She didn't trust anybody. In fact, Mrs Jones' character is like the "bad boss" at the end of a computer game level. She was everything that's wrong with modern society, even if she was living all alone far away from the society (a very artistic way to show that if you hate society for what it is and so you don't contribute to it, you contribute to all that's wrong in it, so nothing gets fixed in the end).

Basically, what the director wants to say is that modern society sucks. But it's not going to get fixed if we remove ourselves from it or from our loved ones. Fixing starts with the person closest to you.

Finally, it's very possible that the "crazy" plant-owner guy and his wife lived too, although we don't see that in the movie. If we have seen that, maybe it would have been more obvious to viewers what the movie is really all about. I believe that the director could have made a few things more clear for viewers to understand, so I will take a point out of my final movie rating for his shortsightedness: 9/10.

Less than CW-quality, and made for no one
30 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Terrible show. Hasty writing and pace, no fleshing out of the situations or the characters.

Dialog as bad as seen on network TV, like the worst kind you'd fine usually on CW. For example, on the first episode, a character who had quite some dialog up to that point, dies while part of the main team, and no one acknowledges his death afterwards. I mean, what is this? Who wrote this vapid, emotionless, shallow show?

Also, the anachronistic stuff (e.g. Modern dance, pop song, speaking rudely to the royals etc) really take you out of the fantasy. Either this is high fantasy, or it's a cheap teenage drama disguised as one.

I wanted to like this, but it doesn't let me. It feels as if the writers didn't take their assignment seriously, and only worked on the script in between other projects, in weekends.

Pandorum (2009)

One of the top-3 space horror films ever made
7 September 2021
Pandorum is among the top-3 space horror films ever made (the other two being Event Horizon, and Alien). There is mystery, action, and lots of pumping adrenaline. Some say that the ideas are derivative, but I don't think that this is a problem on this film, since there are many twist and turns, especially in the end. It's known ideas, but weaved the right way. Other films in this category have not done that. Ignore the clueless critics who gave it really low scores when the film came out in 2009, this film has aged very well, and I hope it becomes a cult hit. I hope we also see a 4k rescan version of it sometime soon.

Don't listen to people who give this a 10
4 April 2021
I had high hopes for this show, but unfortunately, it has fallen flat. The jokes are forced, the camera work is inconsistent, and the editing has pacing issues. Overall, it comes out dull and boring.

I also have a problem with the way they go about things as if it's trivial: e.g. The way the guy escapes from prison, it's shown as a 2 minute "easy-peasy" thing. It makes the show utterly unbelievable. MCU was strong in making things feel real, but the writers of this show simply brush off details -- the same way writers do on network shows. But this is not a network show, it's a premium show.

Overall, it's a failure in both writing, directing, and editing. The only thing that saves it a bit is the chemistry of the two stars and some of the action. But as a story that stays in your head long after, well, it simply doesn't.

Not as surprising twist as some think
25 November 2020
This is a pleasurable film, but it needed more editing in order to keep a faster pace. Additionally, regarding the so much praised twist, I knew what was going to happen by the 40th minute. The twist was just not twisty enough for me. In fact, I'd say that the movie would have been better without a twist, since the twist kind of undos the main premise. The film would have been better if it had focused even more on how this man treated his robots as individuals or not.

Twilight (I) (2008)
10/10
One of the best films I've ever seen
6 September 2020
The Twilight film (in contrast to the book) is one of the best films I've seen put together. The script is on point and flows, the direction is flawless, and the editing is organic. All 3 things made by women who were able to capture the female sensibility and romance perfectly. I've never seen another film in the history of cinema that did that.

To make it clear: I can't stand the subsequent films, neither any of the books (including the book for this film). The story went off the rails and lost focus after the first book (which itself wasn't as tightly written and smart as the actual scriptwriting for this film). And giving the direction job to male directors for the subsequent films, it lost its magic.

But this first film, it's highly on point and I consider it the only valid Twilight experience, I avoid watching ALL the rest of the films.

I only subtracted 1 point because I found that the last act with the hunt was made in a rush, in both the film and the book. It should have had a different ending, that puts forward the second film/book, instead of Meyer making the plot up as she went along for these subsequent books/films, making the whole story laughable. She obviously hadn't thought the whole story when she wrote the first book and this is the main problem I have with the saga.

Stories from the Astral World
4 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
What this film is, is the kind of atmosphere and "feel" people report under hypnosis when they try to see what happens between reincarnations. According to these reports, we go to this intermediate stage, where time loses its meaning, and we hop from memory to memory, as if in a dream. At the end, a higher evolved entity (symbolized by the pig in this film) comes and takes you to the next stage when you're ready. That's where all your achievements and disappointments are laid bare, and you understand that the only thing that mattered was love. It's hard to imagine that the author have not read these hypnosis sessions when the novel or the script was written. If they didn't, then they're even more receptive than they think they are.

This isn't Star Trek
18 April 2020
This has nothing to do with Star Trek, particularly TNG. It's boring and pedestrian, and some episodes are just there for decor, to show off guest stars. As for the subject matter, it has been done before countless times, and much better than this way.

Good comedy
16 December 2019
An excellent dramedy, very smart humor. Great performances form the actors, and I found the doctor guy really good in his role. Overall, the film was quite unconvincing at points, but overall, this is a great indie film, considering it overall cost about ~6k (shot on Canon C100 and C300).

Loved the film, witty humor and dialog, well paced too. Great photography too, it also shows how a dSLR can hold its own. The two leads should have been huge stars by now, great talents.

Why TNG is the best TV show ever
16 November 2019
Don't get me wrong. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (TNG) had some appalling episodes over the years, especially in its first two seasons. But it seriously showed its true colors in seasons 3-5 and became a classic because of some of the best-written episodes that television has ever seen.

Below I present the best episodes of TNG in my personal opinion. No, these episodes are not actually the best in terms of action or pure entertainment. But they represent the best television work in terms of offering food for thought to the viewer. After you watch one of these episodes, your brain somehow stalls for about 10 minutes, because it rewires itself to new ideas and new points of view. These episodes are pure social commentary, not sci-fi. You educate yourself by watching.

If you are looking to just have some fun and indulge yourself to pure well-done entertainment, I can certainly recommend the TNG episodes "Cause and Effect", "Best of Both Worlds", "Deja Q", "I, Borg", "Clues" and according to some, the best TNG episode ever, "The Inner Light". But let's find some episodes where the viewer actually learns something useful. These are episodes that have immensely inspired me in my life. They were my mother and father, teaching me new points of view.

  • Who Watches The Watchers?
Dealing with the creation of religion and superstition.

  • The Offspring
Should artificial life-forms have the same rights as humans do?

  • Transfigurations
Should we be afraid to evolve and become different or should we embrace changes?

  • Suddenly Human
Nature or nurture?

  • Devil's Due
If you witness bedtime stories or religious folklore come to life, do you become a believer to these stories, or do you keep your brain in place and try to find a scientific explanation for what you experience?

  • First Contact
One of my absolute favorite episodes. Do you just tell everyone that aliens exist, or do you wait until your subjects are ready for such a major change?

  • The Host
When you fall in love, do you fall in love with the body or the mind?

  • The Outcast
Deals with gender and identity.

  • The Game
How much faith do you put to technology just so you can have some good time?

  • The Chase
We're all star-stuff, coming from the same cosmic explosion. We're One. The episode is amazingly inspiring and far-reaching.

In conclusion: let your kids watch TNG (just start from season 3).

The Mandalorian (2019– )

Good, but too fast-paced
12 November 2019
The production values on this series is off the roof (they even used anamorphic lenses and an Alexa LF, the highest one can get today budget-wise). Very classical Star Wars-looking and feeling, I think the older fans will be happy with this series.

My only complain is that the editing was way too fast. The actual live action only was 37 minutes! Usually, pilots on non-network TVs are anywhere between 55 and 70 minutes, to create the new world, capture it, and hook us in. The Mandalorian instead was hop-hop-hop, from one place to another, without much time to enjoy the various planets/places. The establishing shots simply weren't there, and that hurt the atmosphere of the show.

Overall though, not bad, it's a cowboy fantasy sci-fi.

Wasted budget
10 November 2019
This is a rather boring movie. But hey, some might like it. The issue I have with this film is that in reality, this film could be shot for $100k. Not the $2 mil if actually cost. There is nothing special in it, it feels like the run of the mill indie film, but there were no special scenes that would require lots of money to produce. As for the actors, the director could get cheaper ones. If you want to make an iPhone movie, do it cheap. $2mil is an astronomical budget if you're shooting with a phone.

A great spiritual movie, turned sci-fi, turned spiritual again
9 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
One of my most favorite sci-fi movies of all time. Most people didn't get it though, so here's some analysis. Contains spoilers:

1. Where did Alton come from?

  • Alton was conceived & born normally by his parents, as any human has. The fact that he could reach to other dimensions was a product of evolution. His father exhibits the same abilities (as shown at the very end when his eyes shine), but to a much smaller degree. The evolution of human kind to another state of being is teased.

2. Where did the alien structures come from?

  • They were not "alien" in the traditional meaning. They were on a parallel Earth (or another dimension), an Earth that had a different evolutionary path than ours. Parallel dimensions are hidden from our awareness under normal circumstances, but the biological evolutionary step mentioned above made it possible for Alton.

3. What were these beings?

  • These were light beings. That's where the spiritual part comes in: "light beings" are considered in spiritual circles to be very advanced entities. It's been teased by the movie that that's where humanity's future lies too. Also telling is that Alton is reborn by the sun (the light that gives life to everything in our planet).

4. What was the point of the movie?

  • Alton is a messianic figure, just not in the traditional terms. The cult thought that he was literally a religious figure, while Alton is messianic in a more subtle way: he reluctantly gives a preview to humanity of what lies ahead for them. The movie is about humanity's "first glimpse" of how expansive the Cosmos is. Not just in terms of aliens travelling from planet A to planet B (in the same universe) as all traditional sci-fi movies have been for so long, but also in parallel, and also up and down and inner and outer (in other words, the Cosmos is a web in all directions of different universes and dimensional existences). That's next-level sci-fi. That's the border between sci-fi and New Age spirituality (without the negative baggage that usually accompanies it in the minds of most people).

5. Ugh, so New Age hogwash was the point of the movie?

  • No. What people today call "spirituality" is really science that hasn't been understood yet. And since science can't explain it yet, some "faith" might be required in the meantime for those who had direct experience with it. This is why it was so important for Lucas to say "I believe", because after he had his direct experiences with Alton, he made the leap to faith. But belief is to be transcended by hard data, otherwise it becomes dogma, which keeps humanity down. This is what the movie is going for too: the leap from unbelief, to belief, to hard data, and not to dogma (that the organized religion/cult had fallen victim of).

The most telling scene on this interpretation, is at the very end, when Durst is cutting her hair. You can interpret that scene as simply trying to get away from FBI, so she needs to change her appearance. Another, deeper explanation would be though, that Durst's character now is free from religion and dogma. You see, her braids were the same as the women in the cult. Even if she had left the cult, she was still bound by their beliefs for years after. By cutting down the braids, she's now free from such beliefs and dogma, she understands that the cosmos is more expansive, and that said expansiveness is not necessarily "religious" in nature, but rather, "just is".

This was for me the best movie of 2016. The most forward-looking, and the most "edgy" sci-fi movie of them all, by literally moving the needle of sci-fi from caricature super-heroes, monsters, and A-to-B aliens, to a more expansive terrain that's more rich in potential. As an filmmaker myself, that's the kind of sci-fi I always wanted to make too.

6. So why didn't so many people get it?

  • It's because most people aren't indoctrinated in such cosmological ideas. Even if Alton did explain it at some point, about a "world on top of ours", that still didn't register with most people. Most viewers needed a way more spoon-fed explanation to get it (and maybe they should have received it, that's a failure of the movie production companies involved to not insist that the director gives it to them).

Additionally, the press' comparison of this movie to the '80s Spielberg movies didn't help at all, because this movie had absolutely nothing to do with these older movies (people went to the cinema expecting something specific and recognizable, and they got something completely different instead). So they found the movie a boring dud, as if without significance, and with a WTF ending. But there is significance in the movie, it tells of a larger world that we will eventually reach one way or another, but that we must have faith until that day comes, when that faith transforms from belief to hard scientific data.

This is not different than if the year was 1870, Jules Verne trying to convince people that one day we will have technology to reach for the stars, or the deeps of the sea, and instead, he gets people thinking he was crazy, or just a "fantasy story without significance". All it needed was some faith in the natural process of technological and/or biological evolution. That's what the filmmaker is asking of you today too.

A masterpiece... in need of a tighter editing
8 November 2019
I was waiting for this film for over a year now. A feature film shot with such a low budget (~$8k) is more than impressive. The two brother directors/writers are having the flow of the story all mapped out perfectly, just as any script-writing book (or YouTube script-writing channel) would advise you to. A perfect story-telling execution, flowing beautifully. Such a great attention to detail, with the production value off the roof too. Performances were great, VFX were awesome, audio design was top notch, music was epic & fitting, it all around was a great and superbly-made adventure.

This is a must-see for everyone who loves hard sci-fi movies, and even more for those who are aspiring filmmakers. THIS is what you can make for $8k. Get to work, fellow filmmakers!

Yet, there was one point that I was worried about all year long about, and unfortunately, I wasn't wrong. You see, when I first saw last year that the film would be 128 minutes long, and yet there are only 3 main speaking roles in a tight car space, I knew instinctively that there was an editing issue at hand. No matter how awesome your story is, you can't keep the tension up for so long with so few characters and locations. The film needed anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes of shaving. This current cut, I consider it the "director's cut", basically the cut you'd release on a special edition DVD down the road. But the theatrical/official release should have been much, much tighter.

Regardless, don't miss out on this film! A gem in the indie filmmaking world.

Very accurate documentary about what is going on. Only part missing though was about the rest of the events during the abduction, like learning things when abducted as a kid, or about climate change after the reproduction event.

Terrible short film
19 August 2019
The story is thin, the CGI is heavy. Any truly substantial dialog doesn't happen until the third act! Everything else is filled up with CGI, unnecessary scenes, and of course, exposition. And more exposition. Exposition is the murderer of story! Show, don't tell! Illogical things happen just so the story could progress towards the "sit-down-and-listen type of explanation" (which I consider it another form of exposition) in the third act.

The director obviously doesn't seem have watched any video online (or read any book) on how to create a balanced story. This film reeks of someone who came into some money and said "I have some big ideas that I want to put on film". But it takes more than scientific interest and self-importance to create a film. It's a craft, and this director/writer has not mastered it yet.

I paid for this film, but now that I've watched it, it's not any better than the films premiering on the DUST channel on youtube for free. It just has more CGI than the usual sci-fi short film.

Twin Peaks (1990–1991)

Twin Peaks losing its plot
25 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Warning: *Some spoilers are discussed*.

"Twin Peaks", is a surreal thriller, serialized for the TV, by acclaimed writer and director David Lynch. The show is seemingly about the murder of teenager Laura Palmer, but eventually it becomes apparent that it's about good and evil and the duality of everyone, wrapped in a paranormal way. In many ways, "Twin Peaks" is a lot like "Lost": people who are not what they seem but are interconnected, deep mysteries, and paranormal elements that drive their fans into theory frenzy! "Twin Peaks" did it first: it put people into theory mode, it's just that unfortunately for it, the Internet was not widespread at the time, and so much of the glory was lost in localized conversations (aka the "watercooler show") rather than becoming an international phenomenon.

The first season was almost perfect. It was up to the point, interesting, haunting. I regard the second season being split into two phases: the Laura Palmer investigation, which is a continuation of the first season, and the aftermath after the killer is found. The first phase of the second season is not too bad, but it's apparent that things started to get a bit haywire with the writers, David Lynch having very little involvement with the show, and ABC trying to drive the project. For example, the Harold Smith outdoors-phobic and Japanese investor subplots where useless and silly. But you haven't seen silly yet.

In the second phase, 90% of the plot is downright silly. From the pregnant Lucy and her two silly men, to James and rich lady subplot which had nothing to do with anything else, to James in general being portrayed like a man whore having the hots of four women in 15 days time while at the same time he's supposed to be level-headed (remember, 1 episode is 1 day in the "Twin Peaks" world), to Josie becoming a maid (what the hell?), to Ben Horne becoming crazy and then sane again, to Leo getting controlled by a dog collar (!), to Nadine and mayor's stupid subplots, to David Duchovny guest-starring and appearing in woman's dresses. I mean, the consensus is that "Twin Peaks" lost its audience because the killer was revealed, but the truth is, it's lost its audience because the show lost the plot entirely, all by itself. I could barely sit through and watch the second season's second phase. I would pause it every 10 minutes and go eat something, or check out my email. I just couldn't sit through an entire episode anymore (except the last two where Lynch came back to direct).

The truth is this: "Twin Peaks" should not have had more than 16 episodes. It should have ended when the murderer is revealed, and should have replaced some unneeded subplots with some of the (rare) points found in the second phase, like the Lodges, Cooper getting possessed by BOB after Laura's murderer dies, the army's involvement & Major Biggs etc. And after the series' run, the three movies should have been created, just like Lynch wanted it. Only one movie was shot at the end, because by that time, the peaksmania had died down, exactly because of that disastrous second phase, and so the movie didn't do well in the box office. Maybe these movies should have been tele-movies.

In conclusion, "Twin Peaks" failed because no one could take the step "Lost" writers took with ABC in February 2007: to give an end to the series and not let it go on and on forever like that. If Lynch was to strike such a deal with ABC before he started shooting, then "Twin Peaks" could have become the ultimate series today (both TV and cinema). It's a shame really.

*SOME spoilers*: Worse than the first movie
20 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I did not like this movie. I found it worse than its predecessor. Evans was not as funny as in the first one, and the logic of the direction was terrible. For example, there you have Evans being able to exchange abilities with the others, and yet, on the next scene he is touching his sister without anything happening. Or, Victor also having been touched by the Surfer's power, and yet he could touch everyone and not switch powers.

Or, when they are on the flying machine, without a protective glass, and going full speed, and not only they were able to shout at one another and get understood, but the amount of wind on the hair was minimal. How stupid was that? I did not like this movie. It was badly done, in the sense that there was no ATTENTION to detail. And the scenes felt rushed, like they were cut off too much in the editing room. In fact, some shots didn't even make sense: there you have Richards fighting and then immediately after he is with Susan. It just felt too cut-off.

5/10 (I gave the first movie 6.5/10)

The Last Child (1971 TV Movie)
I don't agree with this film
17 April 2007
I am an anti-overpopulation believer. I believe that harsh laws will eventually be put into place in the future, be it 1-child per family or 2-children per family (it doesn't matter how many, point is, there will have to be a restriction at some point).

What I don't like about this movie is that they tried to make it look justified by introducing two elements that are not realistic: the forbidding of medically treating old people and the fact that the couple had a child before that died. I am pretty sure that if overpopulation becomes a problem, old people will be continued to be medically treated AND families that they lost their first child will be allowed to have a second chance.

But because overpopulation restrictions might actually make sense, the writers of the movie tried to give justification to their own knee-jerk reaction kind of movie by adding non-realistic, *truly* fascistic elements in it. That's what bothers me with the plot.

Good, but it could have been better
15 February 2007
I bought the DVDs last week and watched all episodes one after the other. The Lone Gunmen TV show has depressed me. The 3 main characters were always broke, complete outcasts and in immediate danger. I am a fellow geek and seeing them in such a condition (and what eventually happened to them at the end) is breaking my heart. However, this condition only empowers what they stand for by showing to the viewer what price they have to pay for what they believe in. The introduction of Jimmy Bond and Yves was a clever addition to the character set, in order to attract more viewers who don't necessarily care a lot about the technical sides of things -- although I found Yves' character annoying at times.

To be honest, the Lone Gunmen show was just above average. It didn't excel compared to X-Files or other shows of its time. This doesn't mean that it was a bad show, but simply not as good as it could have been. I am pretty sure that their budget was quite tight, judging from the limiting sets that each episode featured. However, each episode had its moments, especially when humor was involved. My favorite episode is "All about Yves" and the worst is "Tango de los Pistoleros".

I definitely suggest geek viewers to buy the DVD. I am not sure that less geeky viewers would enjoy it as much though.

Firefly was a great show
29 November 2006
Firefly was a great show, period. If it's one thing I disliked, that was its strong "western" cowboy-style theme it had, which in my opinion it did not make sense at all. It's OK to have one planet with this cultural and dressing theme, but having so many, it doesn't make much sense -- not in the 25th century at least.

But other than that, Firefly was bliss. Amazing dialog, funny, action, love, it had it all.

I believe that FOX canceling Firefly and infuriated so many fans was a justified business decision, as the series was not delivering more than 5 million viewers per episode. However, this is FOX's fault: they did not air the (amazing) pilot when they should have done so (before the rest of the episodes) and they placed Firefly on a Friday time-slot (where we all know how slow Fridays are). FOX killed Firefly before it even begun essentially.

However, Firefly still shines today on DVD sales. This is possibly one of the most sold (if not THE most sold) TV series on DVD ever, with over 1 million copies so far.

I don't see Firefly coming back to TV or movies any time soon, and that's a shame. But at least we have the DVDs to hold on to and our imagination.
