Another Year (2010)
Magnificent
Arguably the film of 2010; the last minute will make you gasp at the courage and inventive skills of Mike Leigh. Certainly a toss up between this and The King's Speech.
All the actors are brilliant; even the bit parts. But Lesley Manville has to be singled out and praised - thoroughly deserving of her several Awards.
As much as I hated Inception - a silly waste of time that thought it probed the soul whilst simply updating the effects of various early James Bond sequences - I adored this examination of our species.
When you go all the way back to Abigail's Party - cut to Secrets and Lies - then Vera Drake - and take a look at this masterpiece and you have to admire his sheer variety and ability to observe the minutiae of the human spirit. Mike Leigh. He really is our finest film maker.
Me Me Me (2011)
Extraordinary, different movie
For a start, it looks unlike any other film I've ever seen. Which some may feel is a bad thing; others will be delighted. Very much a kind of John Waters, James Whale, David Lynch sort of production.
The music is incredibly catchy. The characters are very primary colours; caricatures. Several totally surreal scenes remain in the mind forever - the strange Dad Dancing sequence (actor Jonathan Benda is fantastic) has a weird look of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang about it; the bizarre Sirens performing on a council estate is one of the most peculiar things I've ever seen; the gut wrenching He Hit Me Again (totally out of the blue) is very effective; the magnificent News Anchors - you spend the first twenty minutes wondering whether they are genuine and ghastly or superbly acted; the very touching Never Let The Bastards Get You Down; the stunning sequence when the beautiful villain Mary Montague Miah conveys her bile in a Voice Over lit from below...
This is a most unusual movie and one which will stay in your mind forever. A kind of breakthrough. The closest I can come to comparison is The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
And I bet as many will hate it as will love it.
Vile Pervert: The Musical (2008)
Absolutely superb and original movie
I bought the DVD from Amazon thinking it would be a waste of money but curious. The songs are so catchy and clever though and the characters so surprising and funny that I think this is a future Hedwig or Rocky Horror.
It is amazing. It made me laugh. It shocked me. I'm still humming the tunes and playing the music soundtrack CD.
Bet you this becomes a massive cult hit.
But the best part is the songs. Whilst I think students and the young will be delighted by the courage and daring behind this film, mocking many Establishment sacred cows, the older will remember the 4 or 5 big hits (in the UK anyway) and will like some of the new songs. What's A Girl To Do? is a personal favourite - the girl singing it has a great voice and the words are brilliant.
In October 2009 I showed it to another friend who thinks it is absolutely superb and should be as successful a cult classic as Paranormal Activity or Colin. I have had numerous similar reactions. This film needs picking up and showing on a big screen.
