Good Girls (2018)
Beyond slow
If you try to think of what happened in the last few seasons, there is nothing to say really. All three main characters are exactly in the same place they started, nothing is ever changing. It feels that somebody pressed "Pause" on the story so the story doesn't move. Rio could be an interesting character but the show doesn't spend an extra minute explaining his personality, his ambitions and vision etc. Overall the show starts ok (looks a bit like a "Weeds" copy though), but then just gets stuck in a loop.
Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet (2020)
Great comedy show
Overall I really enjoyed the show. It's much more mainstream than Philadelphia, don't expect dark or very edgy humour, but if you enjoyed 30 Rock - you will enjoy Mythic Quest.
I pretty much like all characters except Poppy who I find very annoying with her exaggerated emotions in every second of every episode, it's a bit too much.
They mix a tiny bit of philosophy and important modern topics with down to earth humour. Some episodes are a bit bland while others are outstanding, so don't stop if you watched one boring episode.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
Weak character development, weak story
It's a medium budget TV show with some decent FX and costumes, but I found the story and the character development very very weak - there is not one interesting character in the show. The storyline is boring and predictable. It cannot be compared to Game of Thrones, there is just no way. The main villain has such great super powers, it's unclear why is he even listening to anybody.
Emily in Paris (2020)
A simple, easy-to-watch romcom
I don't understand why is this show attracting so much hate. Sure, the show is making jokes about French and American stereotypes, and nothing is real - all French in the show speak amazing English with very little French accent. And the job is too easy, and the lead actress seems to be too lucky, and so on.
But come on, it's not a thriller or a documentary. It's a different genre and within this genre you don't have to show reality as close as possible.
Occasionally there were some jokes that made me lough and the image in general is pretty good with some nice Paris views. It's very light, there is no aggression or violence or hate or negativity of any kind in this TV show which is a plus as well
I think it's an okay mainstream TV show
Gotham (2014)
Mainstream soap opera
Acting is all right and styling and FX are pretty good, but character development is very very bad - most characters are plain, don't learn, don't change, don't evolve throughout the series. It almost feels like every episode resets their memories.
Consider Penguin and James Gordon - they go "way back". Yet they still jump from friendship to murder attempt every now then and, generally, don't act like people who have known each other for years. There is just no depth - it's like they are all kids are are only motivated by the events of the current day. No strategy, no vision.
It's the kind of show where you can turn off your brain and play it in background - because the stories are trivial.
Jurassic World (2015)
A mixture of comedy and action
It feels that the movie has been targeted for family audiences – there is nearly no graphic violence in the movie which is a bit strange considering there are hungry (and angry?) dinosaurs.
'Jurassic World' reminded me of 'Martian' – episodes that should have had tense and thrill are dumbed down with jokes and humour. It feels like nobody is ever scared. There is not a single moment in the movie when you are actually afraid for any of the characters.
It's a perfect, cheesy, Disney-style commercial movie. All relevant deaths can be counted using fingers of one hand, and thorough preparations (justifications for their deaths) have been included in the script. If somebody dies – you have been shown multiple times that this was a bad person. No good guy gets spared, basically.
Having said all that, the cinematography is pleasant and the movie can be enjoyed once for sure. Just don't expect to be thrilled.
Pro lyubov (2015)
A mainstream movie with weak performances
My expectations were quite high because of director's previous success with 'Rusalka', but unfortunately 'Pro lyubov' didn't deliver.
There is no story whatsoever, the movie is just a chaotic sequence of non-related episodes. That works sometimes ('4 rooms', 'Paris, je t'aime') but mini-stories have to be exceptional and have to feel complete.
Many of the performances are plastic and fake. It feels that actors are simply reading their scripts rather than submerging into their characters.
In one of the stories, patriotic propaganda is a little bit over the roof, which is probably fine for mainstream movies, but not for art-house directors like Melikyan.
In sum, it's an okay popcorn movie for one view, but it's definitely not worth the hype.
The Last Kingdom (2015)
A low budget version of Vikings
This show is watchable and enjoyable, but it has a number of obvious flaws:
1) Almost complete absence of battle scenes. Perhaps not enough budget? Whenever there is an important fight, we just get fast forwarded to the future
2) Somehow Englishmen and Danes can fluently communicate. Nobody ever in this show explains how and why? They can discuss even complicated topics without any language barrier.
3) Show gives you an impression that English kingdoms had, on average, populations of 100-200 people and armies of 20-50 people.
Overall, it's quite OK and some of the characters are believable. The story picks up after the mid season.
The Martian (2015)
Just an ordinary mainstream Sci Fi flick
I honestly don't understand why this movie has such a high rating on IMDb at the moment – there is nothing outstanding about it at all.
Plot is primitive and predictable (one character says: 'but something could go wrong!' and in 10 seconds something wrong happens). There is no tension whatsoever even at the roughest moments of the movie – jokes keep flying around. The main character is obviously not afraid of anything and not going nuts because of social deprivation. Moreover, main character somehow carries expert knowledge beyond his competency (botany), beyond the job he was hired for.
There is not a single convincing character in the movie. Mars team looks like 'Avengers' – everybody is equally young and handsome, kind and brave, ready to lose their lives and jobs for abandoned colleague. Earth team makes jokes every opportunity – obviously they are not stressed at all. China joins for no reason at all (some old important Chinese guy decided to help an American astronaut, really?)
I would forgive the weakness of the story if the FX was amazing but it's not. While it's pleasant to watch, there is nothing new or groundbreaking.
In sum, it's just another mainstream Hollywood movie that should be rated 6 on IMDb. Current rating is misleading.
Chappie (2015)
Got the ingredients of a good movie, not a good movie
Sadly, a movie that got almost all necessary ingredients of a good flick – nice modern FX, plenty of celebrity actors, hip landscapes (South Africa); fails to entertain.
I would say that the weakest part if the story (plot) – it just doesn't make any sense. It feels that the movie was made for 14-year old, for audience that wouldn't question any episode.
It's totally fine to make silly movies, but you cannot do it half-way – then it's neither serious, nor hilarious. "Chappie" is half-silly, half-realistic, making it very boring.
Story lacks creativity, seriously. Almost everything that ever happens in the movie – is borrowed from other movies.
Don't expect much when you watch this movie, don't repeat my mistake.
The Interview (2014)
Great American comedy
Honesty, I don't understand why there are so many users complaining about this movie. It certainly has a couple of silly Hollywood jokes, but just a couple!
Otherwise, it's quite hilarious and dynamic. James Francos and North Korean leaders characters are amazing. Dialogues are great!
Humour is neither too primitive, nor too intellectual – it's somewhere perfectly in between. Fortunately, there are not many sex or toilet jokes.
You will enjoy this movie if you like Dr Strangelove or Mars Attacks. Or Big Bang Theory!
Role Models (2008)
Just another cheap comedy with toiler humour
High IMDb rating made me watch this movie and I do already regret! Don't know how did it happen with the ranking, but the movie definitely doesn't deserve it.
The story is very cliché - like at least thousand of other movies. First you get introduced to characters, they fight with each other, then there is a new conflict (and of course with some cheesy music in background) and finally a happy end, everybody becomes friends again! Hands up! The actors play not bad, and there is a couple of nice jokes, but indeed there is too much of dirty (and I mean it) toilet humour. Who is supposed to watch this movie? Gangsters or normal families? I wouldn't recommend watching this movie to anybody. There is no message, no story and not much of humour.
The Dark Knight (2008)
Nothing special, just another blockbuster
After reading numerous reviews on IMDb and other websites, and also finding out that the movie got the top position in the IMDb Top 250, I expected to see something really special when I got to the cinema. However, all my expectations faded away throughout the 2 and half hours of "Dark Knight".
Probably, the only outstanding performance is Heath Ledger, whose character is for sure the most charismatic guy of the story. On contrary, Batman looks cold and boring. The pace of the movie is a bit too chill down and relaxed in the beginning with all the action starting after 1/3 of the "Dark Knight". Story is rather good and often unpredictable. However, there are many illogical situations so much typical for blockbusters. For instance, at the end, why should Batman confess that he killed several good guys, if it would have been much easier to tell everybody that Joker did all that? Movie is full simplistic, naive assumptions about human behaviour in different situations.
In sum, it's not a bad movie, probably it's worth to watch it once, but I really don't understand how could it get such reviews and rankings.
