Puppet Master (1989)
A poor movie
This si a very weak horror movie and how it got 4 and a half stars on the site I'll never know. The acting isn't 'superb' as some people have said, it's poor. The effects aren't 'great', they're dated and poor. The plot isn't 'excellent', it's poor. Overall this film is poor however, it was a good laugh, so I'll give it:- 2 out of 10.
P.s What was with the ending with the stuffed dog turning into a real dog for no good reason? Strange.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Sometimes confusing plot saved by great characters and quality writing
The first Coen brothers film I saw was 'Fargo'. That was a great film, if a little short. Then I saw this. Now, when I first watched this I expected a gory, dark film like 'Fargo'. What I got surprised me. This film was quite mellow and laid back for the Coens, at least in terms of sheer, gory violence. But then the plot went off in all sorts of directions and at times became confusing but one thing remained noticable, The sheer quality of the writing and the great acting. The Dude is a warm, lovable fool who just wants to live his life and not have people mess it up. For me what made the dude such a great lead character was the quality performance from Jeff Bridges. The way in which he makes the dude appear confused but also clever is totally believeable. For me the dude was one of the most likeable heroes since Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction. As good as Bridges is as the dude one actor outshines him. John Goodman as Walter. Walter is a mentalist but also a good man and Goodman manahes to portray this with ease. IMO this is his best performance to date. Of course no film would be complete without quality dialogue and The big Lebowski has this in spades. For all the profanity there is real meaning and thought gone into the writing and it helps give character to the characters in much the same way that Glengarry Glen Ross' writing did.
Mallrats (1995)
What went wrong???
After seeing the truly excellent 'Clerks', director Kevin smith's first feature, I had high expectations of 'Mallrats' and have to say that I was dissapointed.
True its not the worst film ever but its not a tuch on 'Clerks'. Here's why:
The characters: Brodie (Jason Lee) is a good character, the 'Randal' of 'Mallrats if you like but I found T.C highly annoying and irritating. T.c is meant to be the' straight guy' to Brodie's wise-ass but he just angers me. All he does is whine (Thats all Dante did but...)
The script: 'Clerks' had a brilliant script, the dialouge was well observed and real without being meaningless. 'Mallrats' script isnt bad but its not as clever or as well realised as clerks.
Jay and Silent Bob: IMHO, these two characters cant carry a film on their own (JASBSB is a prime example of this). In mallrats they're normally supporting roles are made to be more main, more involved in the story. IMO they are weak characters and Mewes' acting is extemely poor.
While this film isnt terrible, it is the 2nd worst film in the new jersey trilogy. JASBSB is the worst.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
A landmark in modern film making
This is without a doubt, one of the finest movies ever made. It has an oscar winning script, great characters and some career performances from Jackson, Willis, Travolta and Thurman.
This movie is so clever and well thought out. Some people find it confusing. Rubbish!. The structure of this film is one of the things which makes it so good and original. when put in chronological order, the story makes complete sense, the stucture is not a gimmick.
The cast of this film is truly excellent. Travolta got nominated for best actor at the Oscars but lost out to Tom Hamks (who was truly deserving as forest gump but, IMO, not as much as Travolta was as Vincent). The character of Vincent is a scumbag but Travolta's performance makes him lovable and funny and likable. Sam Jackson also puts in a stunning performance (The scene in the diner is truly stunning acting).
I could talk this film up all day but i wont. Just go see it and you'll see for yourself how films should be made.
