That Damn Michael Che (2021)
It's not Chappelle's Show, but it's the closest we've got to it since
Genuinely good sketch comedy shows are very very rare and trying to compare every one of them to Chappelle's Show is just an impossible bar to set. That being said, even Chappelle's Show had a few bits that didn't land either, it's just that it had more hits than misses and the high points were some all time greats.
So no, That Damn Michael Che isn't the next Chappelle's Show, but it's better than any other sketch comedy show I've seen since. It often feels like they forgot how to make a good sketch comedy seen since it and Little Britain finished back in the mid-2000s. This is the first sketch comedy series I've found since that gave me some regular moments where I would crack up laughing at some of the bits. I also like the way that some of the bits continue through the entire episode.
Well done Michael Che, I hope there are a few more series left in the tank.
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson (2019)
Don't waste your time or bandwidth, I wish I could give zero stars!
I very rarely give reviews on this site, so rare is it that I needed to reset my password on my account and updated the email address on my IMDB account as I hadn't used that email for about 8 years. I went through all that just to take the time to explain how terrible this show is. It's so bad, even if you have an unlimited download internet connection and steal this series for free, it's still not worth the time or effort to do so. How this show is so highly rated and has even been renewed I will never understand, I've heard better jokes made up by a 6 year old.
It's not that I don't like this type of comedy either, I enjoy the work of many of the guest stars on this show like Andy Samberg, Will Forte, Cecily Strong, etc, but this felt like a bunch of failed jokes and setups that even your community improv theatre rejected.
I can only think that there are a bunch of fake reviews for this show, so if you do decide to give it a try and don't find the first 5 minutes to your taste, please just give up, it doesn't get any better.
Syrup (2013)
Seriously unconvincing lead.
I haven't read the book, but reading the comments it would appear as though its fairly different so I don't think this matters much as far as a review of the film is concerned.
The main thing that distracted me through the whole movie was the casting of Shiloh Fernandez as Scat, other than maybe having the look of a sleazy marketer, he seemed massively out of place as a male lead. I didn't think there was any chemistry between him and Amber Heard at all, any attraction between the two seemed totally implausible. He'd probably be fine in a supporting role, but not as a lead. I was wondering the whole time if his father financed the movie or something to get him the role.
Other than that the movie was OK, it did seem to be trying to hard to be cool and edgy and didn't really pull it off. Sure it had a tiny budget, but if anything doing things on a shoe string should make a movie more cool and edgy, but it wasn't at all. Everything that was meant to be cool seemed forced and cliché.
On the positive side, I thought Amber Heard was great as 6, as was her character. I can see why the ending left a few unhappy, but I think it was better to do what they did than just some by the numbers rom-com ending.
A Perfect Getaway (2009)
Definitely misleading, but it doesn't cheat.
Like another reviewer has done, I felt the need to defend this movie after watching it on the weekend. I actually watched it one and a half times as I had people come over half way through, I then went back and restarted it back at the time I got interrupted. This meant that I got to re-watch the main section of the movie knowing the twist in advance. Just like watching The Sixth Sense, if you watch the movie again once you know the twist then you can see that the scenes you thought you saw, didn't actually happen the way you thought they did. Some of this was due to editing out crucial parts, others simply was just the context. I read Roger Ebert's review and thought he summed it up perfectly, "Is it misleading? Yes. Does it cheat? I think not. It only seems to cheat". Now if you aren't allowed to mislead the audience in a Thriller, then you may as well stop making them ever again.
It's not a perfect movie, it's not going to be an all time classic, however it is entertaining, certainly better than many big budget movies I've seen in the last year or two. I would have no trouble recommending it to friends to watch on their next movie night. The location is stunning, the cast is solid and the story will keep your attention. Sure you're going to have people guessing the twist, but given the small cast, that's not that difficult. Some people just like to admit they guessed the twist very early on to try and make themselves seem smart, however they must have some decent knowledge of the preview to know what's going on in advance as they don't even reveal that there's someone out there killing honeymooners until well into the movie, so don't let these reviews put you off.
Watch this movie with an open mind and just enjoy it for what it is. It's not mindless entertainment, it's not Shawshank or Usual Suspects either, but that doesn't mean it's not a good movie.
