Roma (2018)
Not a regular Hollywood Best Seller, but quite exceptional though
I've read a lot of the reviews and most of the people complain about being boring, stupid, non sense, etc.
Those are the same kind of comments I've heard from friends (I'm writing from Mexico City), and it wasn't in my plans to watch this movie. However one night I had no better choices and decided to give it a try.
It's partially true that the plot is weak. But I think that's precisely the point the director wanted to make. Before watching this movie you have to get rid of stereotypes all together, and simply enjoy with an open minded attitude. Because this one is not the well-known formula most of the people like to watch in a movie.
It's basically about the life of a maid in the early 70's in Mexico. How she fits into the family, the sort of problems she deals with due to the lack of academic education and common sense, and finally, the way society worked in that time. But yeah, the maid is the main character of the movie.
So, for starters, if you don't find anything appealing about knowing how a maid lived in Mexico City 50 years, go do yourself a favor and don't be stupid enough to watch this movie, expecting the adrenaline of the Avengers or such, if you know what I mean.
However if you're like me, who happened to live his childhood during that time, then maybe it is worth watching. But you need to understand there is actually no plot. It is basically the introspective of the life of someone, as regular as a maid. Nothing truly amazing about that. She doesn't fight the super bad guys, neither becomes a rock star or a rich software developer. It's 1971, it's Mexico City, and again, it's a maid from Oaxaca, one of the poorest states in Mexico.
Overall I could not rate the movie over 8, not because it is not good. It is indeed. But I trend to keep higher ratings for movies that truly make me wonder about something. This one is not the case. But I cried like a baby when I saw this, and probably you will to.
Hope this feedback can encourage others or prevent more disappointed ones, depending on your case. Cheers.
Tomorrowland (2015)
So much budget wasted...
This is the second review I am writing, in the hope I can save 2 hours of someone else's life.
I won't tell what the movie is about, because is pretty much the same formula Disney used in Big Hero 6. Begins promising but as the movie goes on, you have that terrible feeling that is not going to deliver.
The plot... well is bad, I mean really bad. The special effects are great, probably that is what makes me feel so frustrated.
The movie ended and I was like "this is it? really?". Trust me, this is not worth it not even as an entertaining movie, total waste of time.
I read some reviews before watching and thought this could be good at least for my children. They didn't like it either.
The Scopia Effect (2014)
I want my time back
It is not a total disaster, I mean the movie has a crazy plot and it goes slowly. I was expecting (from some very optimistic reviewer here) something really original, scary and unpredictable.
It turned out to be original, but that's all for what its worth it. The acting is average at best. Around 3/4 of the movie I began to figure it out, and the result wasn't as unpredictable as I was expecting. There are some violence parts, but really nothing to be scared of. So I could not rate this movie as horror; probably an insane thriller is where it belongs to.
It is a shame because the idea probably with a better plot and direction could be a good thing, but it is not.
I stress you not to waste your time and look something else. I gave it a 3/10 because it could have been worse.
