solid horror movie
24 June 2007
First I should say I went in with high expectations, based on reviews I had read here. I'm usually disappointed, but this time I wasn't. The story has a good pace. They don't feel the need to explain every little detail, which is always appreciated. The special effects were used quite a bit, not overused, and there were some classic camera tricks that I really enjoyed. Overall, very well done. I did get scared at some points, but I was never grossed out and you don't have to watch any long, dull, uncomfortable torture scenes - though there is plenty psychological torture. And the best part is you don't really know how it's going to end - I'm sure you could guess if you tried, but they don't give everything away before it happens. I have to agree with one of the other reviews I read - the sound editing is outstanding as well. Early in the movie the main character's ears start to ring. Ususally having your ears ring is a very internal experience - your the only one who can hear it and it's just in your head. I think that scene really sucks you into the movie physically.

Overall, I would say it's the best new horror movie I've seen in years. Not just a good horror, but a good movie.

loved it
4 August 2005
i rented this in japan at tsutaya - only because it had English subtitles. i had no idea what it was about or if it would be any good - i think that made me like it more. at first i was a little put off by a love story between a 40 year old man and a 15 year old girl, but the character development was outstanding. i felt that all the characters and relationships between them were very well thought out. by the end i had no problems with it. it was also a little longer than i'd expected, but only had about three minutes on the end that i thought was unnecessary. some of the cinematography seemed a little cliché, but as i got into the story it didn't bother me at all. overall, i'd say this is one of the best movies i've seen lately. it was very original and well made.

Really good movie, weak ending
7 February 2005
Warning: Spoilers
**spoilers - if you have never seen an action movie before** I loved this movie until the end. I felt Jennifer Garner's acting was great, except for the few romantic moments. I especially liked the work-out montage - it doesn't seem very often that the practical side of being a superhero is shown in a movie. I really liked the teenager. I think her acting was great for the role. I enjoyed all the fight scenes, but on almost all of them it seemed like something could have been just a little bit better. I was kind of disappointed that I was more attracted to the supervillian than the love interest (but then maybe that says more about me than the movie). About the end: I felt like they really cheesed-out. I didn't feel like any of the loose-ends they had up to that point needed to be tied up. They obviously wanted to leave it open for a sequel, but they really could have been more subtle - really, everybody knows that if the movie made any money, they'll make a sequel. I felt like it was much better than Daredevil, a little better than the Punisher (which I liked), but no where near as good as the X-Men movies.

the worst movie I have ever seen
27 October 2004
I just want to know how this movie happened. I didn't see any references to Troma in the credits.

I had previously considered Astrozombies the worst movie I had ever seen, but it was bad-funny. Lots of long boring scenes that dragged on for no apparent reason. Cheerleader Ninjas looked promising mostly because of the title and there was not a girl in her underwear on the box. I thought maybe they would go for more of a ninja-type thing. I was very wrong.

I was honestly shocked at how bad the acting was - I've seen community theater that was exceptional compared to this. I did find the use of a body double for the main character somewhat funny because I can't imagine how the stand-in could have been a worse actress. (I kind of feel bad criticizing others so harshly, but it was like they weren't even trying.)

Actually, I don't want to reflect too much on how bad the movie was, just try to warn others so that they might not suffer the same fate as me.

On second thought, it might be worth watching for young teenage boys who can't afford to rent porn and really feel the need to see naked women - no, I think they would even be disappointed.
