88 Minutes (2007)
6/10
Pretty bad thriller saved only by its main star
8 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Jack Gramm (Al Pacino) testifies at the trial of suspected serial murderer Jon Forster (Neal McDonough). Gramm's testimony is crucial to help convict Forster. After receiving his conviction by the jury, Forster taunts Gramm, saying "Tick- tock, Doc." 9 years later, as Forster's execution date approaches, several similar torture murders occur. On the way to his class, Gramm receives a phone call from someone using software to distort their voice, threatening he has 88 minutes to live, and the film follows his efforts to discover who is trying to kill him. Gramm receives another threatening phone call while teaching and becomes suspicious of some of his students, as well as dealing with evidence that Forster isn't behind this attempt on his life. A game of cat and mouse ensues with the unknown would-be killer...

To be honest, I'm a huge Al Pacino fan and I often question what made him take this part. It's a pretty awful movie truth be told, but saved from complete notoriety by Al himself. I love nothing more than seeing Al play these kind of roles. Granted this movie is no Heat or Serpico but its not as bad as people would have you believe, either. Passable entertainment but the lack of decent supporting actors meant that Al was fighting a losing battle to keep this ship above water.

The ultimate action movie... the best of the best!
17 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I remember in 2010 being really, really excited about upcoming release The Expendables. I've been a fan of all the big action stars since I was a child, and seeing the trailer for EX1 had me buzzing in anticipation. I DID love the movie when I saw it but was left kinda underwhelmed due to Eric Roberts being a pretty lame bad guy and Terry Crews, Randy Couture and Dolph not being involved with the team enough. Fast forward two years and they have righted those wrongs and also added way more bang for your bucks. Pretty much every scene features Couture, Crews, Statham, Dolph and Sly killing bad guys and making wise cracks together, plus way more fantastic screen time for Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. They are joined by new sniper Billy The Kid (Liam Hensworth) as Jet Li has had enough of the mercenary lifestyle and gone home. On a mission to rescue a Chinese kidnapping hostage in Nepal, the mercs encounter their old friend Trent (Schwarzenegger) and save the day. Trying to relax after their latest mission, they are thrown in to the deep end by Mr Church (Willis), who isn't happy that they took his money and didn't follow his orders in the first movie. He is sending them on a secret mission in Eastern Europe to retrieve a computer program used for creating bombs from plutonium. The problem is they are beaten to the device by the evil Jean Villain (Jean Claude Van Damme, at his glorious OTT evil best) and a member of the team is killed. Church isn't impressed and warns them they have to recover this device at all costs, and the crew are out for revenge and gunning for Villain and his henchmen. Throw in some wise-cracking ass-kicking from action legend Chuck Norris to the mayhem being dished out by Sly, Arnie and the gang and you have the greatest action movie ever to grace the big screen. This is shameless manliness at its best, highlighted by a shootout where Dolph and Sly happily high five after blowing away dozens of bad guys. I have just seen this movie in an advanced preview tonight (16 Aug) and I can safely say I have never left a movie theatre so entertained in all my life. I've been to comedies that didn't get as many laughs as this movie, with so many classic one-liners and gags added to almost all of the action. Seeing Chuck Norris pull one of his own internet 'Chuck Norris jokes' was worth the admission alone, and the climax of the movie gave me goosebumps- nothing will top seeing Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone join forces and dispatch hundreds of bad guys in all their glory. If you want big stars, one-liners, guns, explosions, entertainment and a barrel of laughs then this is the movie for you. An absolute epic action movie!!! Only Expendables III can top this now...

I didn't think anything could top The Dark Knight... I was wrong!
23 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I wrote a review of The Dark Knight four years ago which, as you can see, said that it was simply the greatest comic movie ever made and also one of the best films ever (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468569/reviews-2622). Well today I write a review of The Dark Knight Rises with a completely different opinion- The Dark Knight of 2008 is now second to this movie. People may say it is quite long at 164mins but let me tell you, I have seen this in theatres twice already this week and this movie is so compelling and absorbing that it doesn't feel anything close to being long, as the script is constantly moving and developing and taking you on a thrill-ride you wont have have experienced in a long time. It is set in 2016, and Bruce Wayne, (with Christian Bale now hitting a career best Batman performance), leading a reclusive life in Wayne Manor and Batman retired after taking the blame for Harvey Dent's evil doing at the end of the previous movie. Well he is retired, that is, until a maid at his mansion turns out to be a 'cat burglar' named Selina Kyle who steals his beloved mother's pearl necklace, so he dons the cowl and cape again to track her down. After eight years of inactivity, Wayne isn't the same man he was, nursing injuries and a broken heart, and doesn't realise the size of his latest challenge. As it turns out, Selina has a debt with corrupt politicians who have hired a mysterious masked mercenary called Bane (an excellent Tom Hardy) to seemingly help them run Wayne Enterprises. Bane has other ideas though. He wants to destroy Gotham and sends his message through a brutal fight with the caped crusader. He doesn't care about money or power. He is on a mission. With Bruce Wayne at rock bottom, physically and mentally, can he find the courage to rise up and defeat his deadliest enemy? You will enjoy every minute of this to find out. He cant do it alone. With the help of Commissioner Gordon and a moralistic young street cop named John Blake, Batman has to rid the streets of Gotham's evil reckoning and save his own soul. You will be blown away by the sheer size and brilliance of the trilogy ending Dark Knight Rises- one of the greatest movies ever made. After you have seen this you will realise why this was the most anticipated movie of its time. Batman goes out in a blaze of glory... or does he?

The Avengers (2012)
7/10
Another over-the-top cartoon for Hollywood to pander to...
23 July 2012
I didn't like The Hulk movies, they were awful, both in story and execution. Ironman was excellent but Ironman 2 dropped off. Captain America was entertaining if a bit far fetched. Thor was ludicrous. I didn't hold up much hope for Avengers Assemble but i still saw, and enjoyed it, even if Scarlett Johansen shouldn't be within 1000feet of these movies ever. Jeremy Renner and Robert Downing Jr saved this film. Renner is a top notch action star in the making. That aside, the Avengers is beautiful to watch, great effects, decent story but the ending was lame compared to the build-up and, having watched how Christopher Nolan realistically and magnificently does his Batman movies, this isn't even a close second to them for me.

Lockout (2012)
9/10
Another brilliant Luc Besson action fest...
21 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
If i was summarising this movie in one sentence it would be ''From Paris With Love in outer space!'', and that is not a bad thing. Maybe Travolta's Paris movie was a box office flop and critics had a field day with it but critics are paid to criticise therefore i pay no attention to them. Travolta was fantastically OTT working for Besson in From Paris With Love. I absolutely loved it. Im an action movie junkie. I cant get enough of over-the-top characters like Travolta's Charlie Wax and Guy Pearce as Snow is no different. One-liners, insults, blatantly un-PC, he is a walking talking shoot 'em up throwback to the classic 80's action movies of Stallone, Norris and Schwarzenegger. Maggie Grace was quite irritating in another Besson action movie Taken, but she is quite lively in this outing being the sexy damsel in distress. In Lockout she plays the president's daughter on a study mission to the world's first outer space prison containment ship until the inmates take over the asylum and look to use Mr President's little girl as a bargaining tool to get their criminal asses back to earth. Its a good plan except for one thing- Snow. After being framed for a murder he didn't commit (another classic action storyline) he is offered a chance at freedom if he goes to the space prison and rescues the girl. Of course in action movies this is never plain sailing and he dispatches bad guys left, right and centre with no remorse all the while making wisecracks with sexy Maggie. Yes, action movie heaven. OK, so some of the special affects are more Xbox than Hollywood but its a non-stop thrill ride regardless. As an action aficionado i hate that movies like these are becoming less and less, and worse so, financially doomed in the sad vampire obsessed age of movies right now, but i will always pay my money to see some old fashioned ass kicking all day long. This is the best action movie of the year and will be at least until Expendables 2 comes out in August. Sit back, switch your mind off and enjoy. For action junkies only.

Trees (2000 Video)
6/10
So bad it's brilliant!
6 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Considering Jaws is one of the greatest movies ever made, its pretty ingenious of a no-budget movie to be based almost scene for scene on that except the man-eating shark is replaced by a ludicrous man-eating pine tree. These movies are made to be cult hits, and they certainly are! Anyone who took this movie serious and insulted it clearly needs to get out more. This is pure tongue-in-cheek spoof at its finest. Even the character names are hilarious. In Jaws, Quint talks about never going back in the water again. In this, Squint spouting some speech about ''never going back in the forest again'' is so ridiculous my sides split. If you cant raise a smile when the evil tree gets his comeuppance at the end and the awful Brody or Cody or whatever his name is utters the iconic words ''smile you son of a sappling!'', then something is wrong with you. This movie is hardly up there with The Godfather or classics like that. It is a masterpiece of amateur film-making. Switch your brain off, get the popcorn ready and prepare to laugh so hard you'll wet your pants. Brilliant fun!

Awesome entertainment. Travolta is insane!
15 March 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Im a big action movie fan and not normally a fan of John Travolta but after seeing the trailer for From Paris With Love, I thought ''Wow, that looks awesome!''. I was right, it was. I really enjoyed Taken (with Liam Neeson) which was directed by Pierre Morel, and thought this would be similar and therefore very exciting and enjoyable. Morel's breakneck directing style was perfect for Taken and adds to the flow of the movie.

Whereas Liam Neeson is a father hunting for a kidnapped daughter in Taken, Travolta plays CIA Agent Charlie Wax and is a completely crazy, old fashioned gung-ho American secret agent who shoots first and asks questions later. He's teamed with a Paris based, chess playing aide to the US Ambassador called Reese (played by Jonathan Rys Meyers), who, while he wants to see more 'action' in his job, is shocked by his new partner's 'unorthadox methods' in taking down a terrorist cell who intend to blow up visiting US delegates. Travolta is completely OTT in this movie, and looks like he had a blast making it. When Wax arrives in Paris, Reese picks him up from the airport then its straight to the action, as Wax kills a restaurant full of Chinese cocaine dealers, then moves on to the head of the Chinese criminals, killing a warehouse full of henchmen sent to get him. Wax and Reese then move on to Pakistani money-laundering pimps, with Wax killing dozens of them in a run-down apartment building, all while finding time to take cocaine on the Eiffel Tower and have sex with a French hooker while staking out the bad guys. When they finally find out who is behind the terror plot, there is a nice plot twist which keeps the action flowing. Reese is just a passenger as Wax racks up one of the biggest body counts i can ever remember in an action movie.

This movie is very old school, similar to a lot of action-packed Stallone, Schwarzenegger or Chuck Norris movies, where really the plot is secondary and its a showcase for the awesome Travolta. It's just non-stop blast 'em and work it out later, which is fine by me and I really enjoyed it but general audiences would probably reject such machismo in this day an age, which is strange as 2010 seems to be some kind of 80's revival movie-wise with remakes and action films by the bucket load. The plot is simplistic and not much thought is required but the target audience are not going to see this to hear Shakespearian dialogue! It's fast paced, violent, edge of your seat stuff and quite funny (thanks to Travolta). I would love to see a sequel or see it become a franchise. I am already imagining how awesome it would be to see something like From Moscow With Love or From London With Love, which hopefully the producers and Travolta think too. From Paris With Love is the best action film of the year to date, but with Sly's Expendable's and The new A-Team on the way in the summer, it will have competition but it made my day. Action fans will love it, other's not so much...

An excellent effort from Dolph...
4 February 2009
I've always been a fan of action movies having grown up in the 80's fed on a diet of Sly, Arnie, Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme. These are the best of the best when it comes to kicking ass. I would include Dolph Lundgren is this category. Granted, he has been in some terrible movies like Cover Up and The Minion, but all the other big action stars also have movies on their CV's that they want to forget about! The thing that struck me about Missionary Man is that is was filmed brilliantly and had an excellent musical score to go with the usual Dolph Lundgren action we expect from him. He directed this movie and it is shot brilliantly. It reminded me of older Clint Eastwood movies, as Dolph plays a stranger in a small town who decides to help the townsfolk fight back against the greedy businessman John Reno and the corrupt Sheriff's Department. It is the closest thing to a modern western I've seen, and I really enjoyed it. Dolph is back people, and this is one of his best!

Step Brothers (2008)
8/10
Will Ferrell back to his best!
4 February 2009
I think Will Ferrell is an amazing comedian, and most of his movies are so damn funny but this one is possibly the best he has been involved in. I must admit I was really disappointed with his last movie, Semi-Pro, and was thinking he had maybe run out of fresh ideas, but boy was I wrong! Step-Brothers is a story about two middled aged layabouts (Ferrell and the equally hilarious John C. Reilly) who leech off their successful single parents. But when their parents hook up and get married, that means the spoilt brat's have to move in together and all hell break's loose! What follows is one of the funniest comedies in years as the reluctant step-brothers create endless mayhem and torture their unfortunate parents. If you haven't seen this movie and your game for a laugh, this is guaranteed to do the job! Fantastic stuff!

So bad it's good! Classic 80's nonsense!
24 September 2008
There isn't much to say about this movie. It's so stereo-type 80's it's unreal! Carl Weathers (Rocky, Predator) plays Jericho 'Action' Jackson. Im just gonna leave it there because his name is just too damn awesome! This is full of explosions, fulls of fist fights, full of awful acting and one-liners and amazingly, has a half decent cast of big name 80's action stars like Bill Duke and Sonny Landham (both of whom appeared in Predator with Weathers and Arnold Schwarzenegger), and Robert Davy (Die Hard, Raw Deal, Predator 2). But the story is basically about Jackson, who has been demoted to a desk cop and hates it, and has to keep his old 'Action Jackson' rebellious days behind him if he want's to be promoted again. When he is trailing a sadistic businessman who is murdering all his union competition so he can take the head job, then you know his 'Action Jackson' gun-ho days are going to return to save the day! It really is fun, I recommend it completely.

The Condemned (2007)

This is one violent movie!
24 September 2008
Although it's kind of a rip-off of The Running Man, this is pretty good I must say. It has an OK supporting cast (Manu Bennett is awesome, he also starred in John Cena's The Marine) but this movie is all about WWE legend 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin versus the ultimate bad guy Vinny Jones. When I say he is bad, he is REALLY bad. He doesn't mind killing, in fact, he love's killing people. He's quite fond of rape also. So during this movie, based on 10 Death Row inmates forced to fight for their survival on a deserted island until only 1 is left, it becomes all about how much you want to see Jack Conrad (Austin) beat the living crap out of the sadistic McStarley (Jones). WWE films are trying to make it in 'mainstream entertainment' but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon. They should stick to what they do best- nonsensical story lines loaded with over-the-top violence. This movie does WWE proud.

Cena is the next Schwarzenegger!
24 September 2008
This movie is pretty good. OK, so the acting ain't great but what action movie is noted for its spectacular acting? None. So don't beat yourself up about some cheesy dialogue. We used to love Arnie's cheesy dialogue in the 80's so what's the difference these days? John Cena is no Al Pacino but doesn't try to be... What he is though, like Arnie, is a bodybuilder-like bad-ass who just will not quit despite being shot at and blown up in every scene he's involved in! He will not stop until he has rescued his wife from evil kidnappers. Does this sound familiar? Of course it does because its written like every Arnie or Stallone action movie we loved in the 80's! This is a modern day version of 1985's Commando! The bad guys are led by the awesome Robert Patrick (another link to Arnie), and try to escape across the country with Cena's insanely hot wife (played by Kelly Carlson). This is just simply great cheesy fun, an old school popcorn movie that doesn't take itself too seriously and has explosions and action galore. Really enjoyable.

Batman Begins (2005)

Batman Begins- finally erasing the memory of George Clooney and Joel Schumacher!
20 September 2008
Fantastic. Simply superb. This is the Batman movie Tim Burton should have done and what that destroyer of tradition Joel Schumacher didn't have the brains to do. Christopher Nolan and Dave Goyer couldn't have wrote a better origin story and re-ignited the franchise that Schumacher nearly killed in 1997. Basically, the previous 4 Batman movies do not exist. This is a not a sequel or a prequel to them, this is new start for Warner Bros as the superb script focuses on the origin story of Batman- how Bruce Wayne was traumatised by his parent's murder's and travelled the world learning various fighting skill's and studying the criminal mind in order to return to Gotham City to fight the injustice that is plaguing the city, and in doing so creates his alter ego Batman. The creation is of Batman by Wayne is very realistic in detail, such as him creating the Batsuit from a protective military outfit taken from the Research and Development Department of Wayne Enterprises rather than the usual 'How in the hell did he make that rubber suit?' nonsense. Christian Bale is superb as Wayne and is brilliant as a much darker Batman, who finds himself up against his mentor Ras Al Gul and the insane Scarecrow. The fantastic supporting cast (featuring greats like Michael Caine, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman) add so much depth to a film that isn't just about action sequences but about character development and excellent story telling. A smash hit at the box office, this is brilliant viewing.

Rambo (2008)

Rambo 4... A brilliant comeback for Sly.
20 September 2008
After 20 years, Sylvester Stallone's iconic action hero John Rambo is back and just as violent as ever. He's tries not to be, but that is who he is, a force of nature, a killing machine and as he was called in the 80's, the ultimate one man army. He has a little help in this movie in the form of a rag tag group of mercenaries but ultimately its Rambo who is the main instigator in wiping out the brutal Burmese soldiers who are holding American missionaries hostage. Do not expect a great storyline or great acting but loads of (quite brilliantly shot) mayhem as Rambo rescues the missionaries and destroys half of Burma. This is a brilliant comeback in the series for Stallone, just like he did with Rocky 6, and it did excellent box office numbers compared to 1988's Rambo III. Rumors say Rambo 5 is in the pipework for 2009 or 2010, and if the multi-talented Stallone has his way, it will be another worthy addition to the franchise.

Heat (1995)
10/10
Michael Mann, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro at their brilliant best...
6 September 2008
Simply incredible. This movie wasn't a massive box office hit like other similar movies but it is easily one of the best movies of all time because put simply, it has it all. To start with, it is visually stunning. Michael Mann couldn't have made LA look any better. Then we have the fantastic cast led by Pacino and De Niro and supported brilliantly by the likes of Val Kilmer and Tom Sizemore. The casting is astonishing considering this wasn't a big budget, box office smash type movie. Then we have possibly the best written storyline in recent history. The story revolves around the dedicated but highly strung cop Vincent Hanna (Pacino) and his team of detectives trying to bust articulated thief Neil MaCauley (De Niro) and his team of bank robbers. The complexity of the characters becomes shades of grey rather than black and white as Neil wants out but struggles to give up doing what he does best and Vincent struggles to hold his marriage together as his pursuit of Neil takes over his life. All the characters in the movie are complex and interesting, adding different dimensions to the already fantastic storyline. It really has the lot. It is nearly 3 hours long but every minute is gripping and develops the story further, and the acting is fantastic. I recommend it any casual fan as much as fans of the genre. Sensational.

Simply the best of all time...
6 September 2008
Im a huge fan of the Batman franchise and was delighted when Christopher Nolan and David Goyer brought it back to life with the fantastic 'Batman Begins' in 2005 after Joel Schumacher's mediocre 'Batman and Robin' in 1997. It was a fantastic movie with a great cast, a great storyline, great fight sequences... Everything about the movie was excellent. I would never have predicted the sequel would have topped it (most sequels never match up to the original movie) but The Dark Knight beats it hands down and in my opinion is easily one of the best movies ever made, and is the best comic book adaption of all time by considerable distance! We get the same great cast plus more, an even more action packed and gripping storyline and we get sensational performances from Christian Bale as Batman and the late, great Heath Ledger as The Joker. Nolan himself said he didn't see The Dark Knight as a superhero movie but called it a crime saga similar to Michael Mann's Heat, and he is spot on. It's the story of the battle for control of Gotham City, pitting Batman and his allies Lt. Gordon and DA Harvey Dent against the mafia and the insane terrorist The Joker. The storyline is gripping with lots of plot twists and you get caught up in the plight of every character instead of focusing on one simplistic story. It has incredible special effects and is not crammed with CGI which gives the film fantastic realism and makes 'Batman and Robin' looks 100 times worse after watching The Dark Knight. I recommend that if you haven't seen it yet, do so as soon as possible because it is the total package and appeals to all people, not just Batman fans. I hope Nolan and Goyer return for the third installment because the two previous films would not have been possible without their fantastic story telling skills. And Heath Ledger may be dead but his spirit lives on, and its a shame that he didn't get to see his finest work in full and get the recognition he richly deserves. A simply incredible movie.
