I watch a lot of b-movies and the comments in imdb are way too harsh. The writer, director and producer had to make a movie about bugs and troopers on a low budget. I'd say they made it out of love for the genre and theme. It is too gorey for the big market, too niche, and too depressing to appeal to anyone but die hard fans of scifi, hard military scifi at that. And sadly there seem to be fewer and fewer of us around. ...Sigh....
You need to compare it too all the b-movie's out there, the really bad b-movies with horrible stories, vague sets, and bad art direction. You know, just about all the filler dvds under the big releases at your local blockbuster. And SST2 comes out enjoyable, atmospheric, real concentrated effort on each scene, and with lots of characters. I mean look at the ton of cool fog scenes and the dirty cramped sets. Plenty of bug scenes to remind you what this is all about. The only weak f/x was the muzzle flash on the guns. Seems they could have added some cool big bad ass muzzle and sound in post.
The story was too much like a lot of "alien inside a human for lots of camera time" to add suspense in cheap b-movies, which I'm a little turned off by, but I still have to give this one high marks because of the great effort, and I hope if enough of us support this type of production then Tippet and Ed and Davison can explore more productions like it.
The only scifi movies that are better, in this genre, are the first 2 aliens, predator 1, robocop 1, sst1, etc... I bet if you compared this to any of the low budget stuff SST2 would come out on top.
BTW the f/x was GREAT!(for this low budget, midnight movie)And the prosthetics were great too!! I'm totally shocked at how harsh people are. It's like their missing the big picture here: being a small picture, a fun picture, a cool little fun story to watch and enjoy and get off on more bug/trooper stuff. What's so hard or critical about this!!!?? AAAAaaaarrrrrghhhh!!!
