you guys are way too hard on this film
28 April 2004
I watch a lot of b-movies and the comments in imdb are way too harsh. The writer, director and producer had to make a movie about bugs and troopers on a low budget. I'd say they made it out of love for the genre and theme. It is too gorey for the big market, too niche, and too depressing to appeal to anyone but die hard fans of scifi, hard military scifi at that. And sadly there seem to be fewer and fewer of us around. ...Sigh....

You need to compare it too all the b-movie's out there, the really bad b-movies with horrible stories, vague sets, and bad art direction. You know, just about all the filler dvds under the big releases at your local blockbuster. And SST2 comes out enjoyable, atmospheric, real concentrated effort on each scene, and with lots of characters. I mean look at the ton of cool fog scenes and the dirty cramped sets. Plenty of bug scenes to remind you what this is all about. The only weak f/x was the muzzle flash on the guns. Seems they could have added some cool big bad ass muzzle and sound in post.

The story was too much like a lot of "alien inside a human for lots of camera time" to add suspense in cheap b-movies, which I'm a little turned off by, but I still have to give this one high marks because of the great effort, and I hope if enough of us support this type of production then Tippet and Ed and Davison can explore more productions like it.

The only scifi movies that are better, in this genre, are the first 2 aliens, predator 1, robocop 1, sst1, etc... I bet if you compared this to any of the low budget stuff SST2 would come out on top.

BTW the f/x was GREAT!(for this low budget, midnight movie)And the prosthetics were great too!! I'm totally shocked at how harsh people are. It's like their missing the big picture here: being a small picture, a fun picture, a cool little fun story to watch and enjoy and get off on more bug/trooper stuff. What's so hard or critical about this!!!?? AAAAaaaarrrrrghhhh!!!

rear window with giant cockroaches

It does start off slow but well acted, directed, written by newcomer J.T. Petty. However the last climactic scenes shows how well placed shots, edits, lighting and sound can do for a low budget monster flick. The CG and puppetry were well balanced, hiding weaknesses, using their strengths. Very good payoff for graphic violent mayhem. Could have been a bit more action for my common denominator needs but I did cringe a few times, feeling somewhat mortal.

Some minor critiques. The exterior lighting with high contrast and great shadows was superb but the lighting for interiors was too even and felt like a TV studio set. Of course the whole thing felt filmed in a studio but the exterior had more contrast, style where as interiors seemed to just do the 'play it safe' sort of BBC lighting.

Good job to actors, great sound, nicely done set painters though a bit more obvious then subtle. Interesting music score.

Freakishly bad home made movie.

Do not rent this, unless you actually plan on making a bad action movie at home.

I think this was filmed in 16mm? And filmed years ago. A known Russian UFC guy, Taktarov shows up in an out-of-place-edit fighting one of the Machado brothers, he's very young in this one. But now with the advent of home pc dvd copiers, anyone can pull out those bad movies and sucker you and me to rent them at blockbuster. I actually applaud blockbuster for taking on all these halfwit dvds.

I ffx2 on my dvd just to amuse myself watching this film. It took about 10 minutes, with a few moments where I watched the odd fight and gun scenes. All done at about the same level as you and I doing it in our backyard. A big bland southern california farm backyard that is.

The editing is amazingly weird, apparently no one planned out the needed shots nor was there any second unit. The goons they used to die kept showing up over and over, one I noticed, they painted his face with black camo paint, then he showed up a scene later with all the other goons, sans face paint. I almost chuckled.

They even turned a sport I'm interested in, sort of boring and bland by showing a beginning scene at their wrestling school, revealing all the things they are going to do in the movie.

Thankfully the Machado brothers haven't made any more movies and this DVD probably won't be much of a revival.

Breath of fresh air.

It's rare to get a monster movie that does get you involved. I mean I watch every silly monster movie out there. I dropped my TV remote while watching this and jumped. For that, I gave this a 10. The animatronics and editing of the werewolves was great, from the first go. I really really enjoyed this film. Not for the feint, extremely gorey.

Reminds me of good werewolf films, "Night of the Living Dead" & "Predator".
