We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists (2012)
A truly eye-opening documentary on a group people often question.
A truly fascinating documentary that really gives a clear history of the whole movement, not just Anonymous. Like you begin to understand the whole collective in a more revealing way. How it all began, how it evolved, how people disagreed and some took the idea too far. How the media still does not understand it. I truly enjoyed this and found its explanation while mostly in favour of the collective they did point out the lower parts of it. They also revealed how it was treated and how they share a kinship with WikiLeaks.
If you wish to truly understand the Collective this documentary is very revealing and does not turn away from the worse parts. This is the Emperor without his clothes.
This is Anonymous pockmarks and all.
Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom (2015)
Graphic, bias but necessary documentary.
Extremely difficult to watch especially coming from my a perspective like mine. I am Scottish and support Independence and opposed the Brexit. Seeing this made me fear for my country if we do achieve the goal. I also can't understand how anyone could support the cowardly President who used the Berkut as a tool to quell the mob.
My sweetie for ages been on about Ukraine and this finally made me understand. Russia has no right to what it is doing and the people in Maiden were not Nazis nor thugs, they were everyday people like you or me.
I recommend this to watch but be warned it is graphic and it does not spare the details of what happened.
Death Factory (2014)
0/10... Ignore the critic... Yeah it's not Shakesphere, but it's entertaining at least. My rating 8/10
Okay, I am not saying this is something that is going to get tons of awards, but the idea is interesting on it's own. I bought it for a tenner, expecting something below average, I love horror what can I say. Although I was surprised firstly the serials killers did act like how they were in real life even some fun elements, but I find it funny the only critic gave this 0/10, that shows worth of that critic. Anyway, they are caricatures, but as with horror the most annoying die first. The critic also does not seem to how understand how unlimited stupidity is, referring to the fact they read the book. Of course we as watchers will know it's bad idea, but then we have fortunate fact of knowing they are in a horror movie.
Sorry for the rant, but this was not a hugely bad movie, it had some surprises and outside of small annoyances never felt I need to stop watching. I give it eight, good way to pass the time and one twist is genuinely clever...
The ending, well that shows the critic who reviewed did not even understand what had happened... Plus some of the character's broke out of their clichés which was refreshing.
The Loved Ones (2009)
A Perfect Indie Horror
It's very very rare I see a movie that delivers good cast, great horror and disturbing visuals, the atmosphere alone grips you. It doesn't feel like the schlock Hollywood sends out everyday. This horror has heart. Now be warned spoilers.
Brent played Xavier Samauel's of Twilight fame and the top billing of the film according to the DVD plays Brent the main character and I would be lying if he doesn't do a good job, he's got very little dialogue, but before talkies actors and actresses strengths shone through their performances and he plays it perfectly.
We open with a truly epic establishing audio, it's a radio which switches between different types of music, having seen a spoiler review of this, I noted how this is very like someone who's mentally ill. With different music switching and cutting out, it establishes a sense of unease early on.
We then meet our protagonist for film and his father having a good time chatting while he lets his son drive. We get idea they're happy and they really love one another. Unfortunately this isn't to last, as a figure with a heart carved into chest (remember that) and with a hole drilled through head (also remember that). Swerving to avoid him, they crash into a tree.
Blackness.
Fast-forward to present we see Brent has changed a lot, he's gone through an emotional breakdown and though he's kept his friend and girlfriend, it's obvious he feels a great deal of guilt for loss of his father, but he's not become an unbearable a-hole.
Here we're introduced to main players of the films, his friend Jamie whom loves the goth girl Mia, but is too afraid to ask her out. After some banter with Brent he finally asks and she yes.
This here is the secondary plot, but unlike certain people's opinions they do connect.
This is where we meet the film main antagonist, a cute plump girl brown haired girl named Lola played superbly and subtly (to begin with) by Robin McLeavy, she's the star of this IMO.
She waits until no one nearby and approaches Brent. When he turns she asks him quietly would he go to the Prom with her. Brent refuses her, but tries to let her down gently and walks off.
From this first scene with many things are addresses, she has trouble talking to boys and clearly shy -- though you know what they say about shy people, they're the most dangerous.
Evidently, I should point out I'm shy, so not everyone, but in her case, she is.
As he walks out he meets his girlfriend a beautiful blond named Holly, they get into a sorta one upping contest to make him say who asked him to Prom, after some realistic lovemaking he tells her it was Lola Stone; none of them are aware Lola saw them in the car.
Holly scoffs and mocks him in good-natured fun before driving off.
Now we meet the second parent his Mother whom is also just as depressed and worries about her son, who listens to death metal now instead of the hard rock or metal he used to listen to.
The tension between him and his Mum is clearly obvious. Frustrated he goes out and climbs cliff with his dog before smoking some pot and relaxing outside with his music.
Because he has his ear buds in he doesn't hear his dog barking warning someone is coming and he's put under by chloroform, while through scene change shows his Mum was trying to phone him.
This is where we're first shown a preview of what's to come, the Father and Lola look over the unconscious Brent.
Meanwhile the Mother has gone looking for Brent, having no luck she finds Holly at the door. The Mother asks Holly if she's with him, but the girl shakes her head.
The friend Jamie is driving to his Prom date with Mia and stops at house, smoking a doobie before using breath freshener and deodorant. This shows just how out of place he feels, this is hot girl who said yes to a nerd essentially.
After all that he gets and greets her, she obviously wants to leave quickly, but the parents insist on pictures before they go.
Almost forgot in-between this the scene begins with Lola looking through a scrap book listening to Kasey Chambers - Not Pretty Enough. See this is where most Hollywood horror differentiate from this, the girl is obvious crazy person, but this scene shows how she feels with all refusal. It would have taken a lot to make her like she becomes, she just wanted a prince, her knight, but she was just too shy.
Her Dad comes in to cheer her up and this adds more to scene, it shows despite the craziness that's going to take place they obviously love each other. Though there is hints at incestuous undertones with her and the father because when she's given her lovely pink dress for prom and shoes, she insists he stays and see how she looks in it.
We wake up with Brent and see the house has been set up like a prom, not only that, but he's seated at a table.
I'm told by many people this dinner table scene is a homage to TCM, but as I never seen it, can't comment, except for saying it's well done and suitably creepy.
I think that's enough spoilers. You really need to see this for yourself, it's a gorgeous horror which is unnerving and has great acting. If I had any problems, its's the Mother, she not really used that much, so we never really get idea of it.
Dance of the Dead (2008)
The UK has Shaun of the Dead, The USA provided Dance of the Dead -- WIN
I saw the review and premise on BloodyDisgusting and after not finding anything worth while to watch and being throughly disappointed with Frontiers, I gave this one a watch. Boy am I happy I did. This movie was just amazing.
The plot concerns a group of High Schoolers, the losers of the cliques. What you usually expect here is unlikable jackasses. What was found was they fleshed out every character well, even the one shots or homages as the Gravekeeper was an obvious nod to Evil Dead worked well.
So the losers who couldn't get date to Prom or mucked up their chance of getting one stay away from Prom, except for one of the girls who mistreated by School Captain before he is eaten.
During this Sci-Fi group is also in the Grave yard doing mumbo jumbo stuff. It's pretty much unexplained.
Well zombies start appearing and it's made clear that everyone is in trouble.
That's all I'll give on spoilers, because it's just too great too miss. The humour both dark and hammy, the actors and actresses appear to be having a ball, with some quotes as, "Best goddamn bitch I ever had." referring to dog he had.
It's not a minute, but the absurdity of it makes up for it. The characters feel real and in a strange way showing High School is such a surreal comedic way, feels right.
I thoroughly recommend this to true horror buffs.
YellowBrickRoad (2010)
A true Psychological Gem
I'm surprised when USA get's decent ideas for horror you fling them away. I seen this both with Session 9 and this. Both amazing movies. This one here uses sound in a way I've never seen, the sound becomes the boogeyman, it unnerves and increases tension. I at first worried this would be some stupid slasher or some such. I was happily surprised as it all came together and only after seeing the ending again, I understand now what the end was about.
This film isn't for light hearted Cinema goer, nor people who praise only horror classics. It's for people who love Cinema and good psychological horror, not overt and over the top.
It's not for everyone, but I love it, glad I had BloodyDisgusting recommend it for me. Least they know what they're talking about.
Megaman (2010)
Is MegaMan movie the best video game movie adaptation?
It's not going to win Oscars or any awards but for fans of this game I say most of us --- that is people who don't hold Indie made movies up to a higher scale say like Blockbusters --- can agree this really achieved and showed love for the material, I've seen many bad movie adaptations of games for instance one I loath Resident Evil movie franchise and then to see a writer successfully do each game and add canon it's freaking depressing.
This movie isn't a masterpiece but for budget used and the love put in it by the Director and how the actors felt like they loved the material, it glows.
I'm not saying it's amazing, but compared to most video game movies I have to say this really makes a fanboy smile.
Some highlights were the actor who portrayed Dr Wily and how each robot master had a distinct personality, which showed ingenuity of a high calibur. The effects were what lower the score as well as some of the acting but I felt it was genuine, which was enough for me.
Is it purely for fans, I'd say no, because a amateur film maker could see this to see some tricks, for the camera work was great and editing not jerky or rushed which was awesome.
Good Job
The Ugly Truth (2009)
The Ugly Truth AKA Sexism: The Movie
I like Romantic comedies, they humorous and never try to preach to much. Last good one I saw was Knocked Up and it was sweet. But according to the female lead in it was Sexist. Yes... okay what's your move Miss Heigl
*Katherine Heigl stars in The Ugly Truth*
There is no way nice way of putting this. There no kind way to lay this out. But this movie is freaking sexist. It paints men as sex crazed dogs, without an ounce of romance within them and everything they do is solely for sex. Move over Knocked Up, a film that made me laugh that was beautiful that really told a wonderful story.
Here we have a film that speaks down to woman, objectifies them and actually says this is right. That all men want is sex therefore woman should accept this and dress like whores, act like whores and overall listen to misogyny.
This film hurt me, it made me sick, I'm so glad only saw review because nothing about this movie appealed to me. The characters, the script, the music. It was all to paint men as sex crazed Neanderthals.
I'm 19, I want love, I want a relationship, I don't want sex for sex sake. And I'm demographic this movie aimed at.
Honestly it claims men only pretend to listen, that men only care what will get them laid. It doesn't have any nuances doesn't have any redeeming features and it's so contrived.
How can you call Knocked Up sexist and then go to star in this? It's beyond me.
There only one ugly truth here hypocrisy, making a film that attacks men rather than woman is just as bad as sexism against woman.
Trust me girls, this movie isn't realistic to any degree of real people.
So it just depresses me, how much people love this movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1142988/
Gender wars is a pathetic use of anyone time, once you see people as anyone other than the shallow superficial crap you think of us as, then truly there will be less of this contrived and jaded nonsense.
God this movie annoyed the hell out of me.
Don't watch.
