Surprisingly Good
20 October 2018
Having read the hyperbolic bad scores for this movie and then finally seeing the movie, it was far from terrible. Sure, it felt a little cheap and rough around the edges at times, but personally I thought this was a very solid movie.

Frank Grillo was convincing and the lead anatagonist was simple but compelling. Bruce Willis isn't in it much but he does a good job. From a technical standpoint the movie is very competent. There's a few silly or confusing moments throughout but the movie has a good momentum and well shot action.

Overall, it's a small movie and it definitely feels that way, but it's simplicity works in its favor. It's not overly long either; so if you're a fan of cop and robber movies or action/thrillers, I'd say at least give it a rent.

Great

I give it a 10 because this type of movie is right up my alley. But for those wondering if you want to see it: it's an art house movie. It's slow, strange and to a general audience member, probably very boring. It's very meta and exists as a love letter to old school trash films. So if you're into that kind of stuff, then give it a try.

This movie is less about plot and more about mood and feeling. It's bizarre but nothing so abstract that you can't understand it. There's some darkly funny moments but it's played straight throughout. Cool visuals and a really good soundtrack. It's not a gore fest like the trailer may lead one to believe, but the violence is satisfying.

All in all, I really enjoyed it and I think anyone who's a film/horror buff would too.

Slender Man (I) (2018)

Bland
10 August 2018
Slender Man is okay. Basic formula you've seen before in these cheap horror movies. It's not scary, nor is it bad enough to be enjoyable in that sense. Surprisingly some of the cinematography looks good and there's some interesting surrealist moments, but the acting is okay at best and the dialogue is sometimes quite cringey. "Scares" are mostly just jump scares and a lot of the scenes felt the same.

The source material is hard enough to work with so those familiar with Slendy's origins will find this strangely adapted. Slender works more for creepypastas and video games, not so much cinematically. Far from the worst horror movie made, but definitely disappointing, although what would you expect from a Slender Man movie coming out in 2018? Some will hate this movie because of how bland it is, and I could totally understand that, but from a more objective perspective, it's a functional film that lacks spirit.

Not really worth seeing.

Better Than The First
23 July 2018
Personally, I thought the first movie had some strong elements that weren't executed to full potential-but this one expands upon the most compelling elements and fully delivers.

This movie delves more into Washington's past in special operations and I think it did so rather maturely. Things are hinted at but not spoon fed. The movie is slow paced but it uses its time well, sprinkling action here and there, which carries the drama along nicely. Some surprisingly violent kills in here, and some very touching moments too. Good action that feels pretty grounded. I thought the antagonists were very intriguing and Denzel's acting was top notch.

This movie reminded me very much of 'The Accountant'-so if you've seen that and liked it I think this would be up your alley. Don't expect gunfight after gunfight, but more a story that slowly progresses with instances of hard violence.

Excellent Little Gem

A small, simple movie with a cool and weird plot. Good acting, pacing and twist. Some good kills and a nice sense of mystery as the movie unfolds. I was surprised by how much I liked James Franco in this. Everyone did a great job all around.

If you're a horror fan and/or like offbeat movies, I'd suggest giving it a watch.

Surprisingly Bad
14 July 2018
At this point the Cloverfield name is just slapped onto this work. Supposedly it's more of an anthology at this point but really that doesn't even matter. This movie is just plain bad. Forced connections to the other movies to make it somewhat related to the Cloverfield name. Any aspect of mystery or intrigue is drawn out and wholly unsatisfying.

Supposing this movie wasn't related to the franchise at all, it still isn't good. A boring movie is simply a boring movie-there's not much more to say.

Letdown
14 July 2018
Horror fans: this one's sort of off. The direction it takes is interesting but it never fully commits to being the over-the-top schlock it should've been. Personally, the lead actor (the boy) made the already semi-interesting plot even less interesting. It's funny in a sick way, but then again it's not THAT sick. It almost feels like it's trying too hard to be surprising and violent (the violence isn't done well either).

The pacing fizzles around the second act and then it drudges on till the end which made me say, "meh." From a technical perspective it's a competent movie, and most of the acting is good, but from a horror perspective it feels derivative and flat.

Very Functional Remake
14 July 2018
It's nothing special, it's nothing groundbreaking. Bruce Willis will kill people. It's a fine movie. Competent, well-paced, serviceable acting. The action is interesting at points and there's a couple of surprising kills that would satisfy the exploitation and schlock crowd.

Definitely a decent rent.

Frustrating Letdown
14 July 2018
This movie is the basic hostage rescue sort of movie (someone's captured, authorities make a plan, authorities execute the plan) but it does not play out that efficiently or good. Now, of course this is based off of real events, but for the sake of making a movie things must be altered and trimmed to be made interesting and cinematic-however, this movie seems too interested in showing the least intriguing parts.

It's slow and it definitely FEELS slow despite not that long a runtime. Honestly this movie could've cut out a solid half hour of content. The acting is fine and the movie even looks very nice from a technical perspective, but the pacing is so off. Not to mention the most perplexing and unnecessary inclusion of dance scenes-this aspect really frustrated me after the second time, but why would you ruin the whole rescue op with it, after building it up for the whole movie? It didn't even feel pretentious, it just felt like the editor accidentally spliced dance footage into the film.

This one's a real mixed bag. Don't go in expecting a cool climax. It's not much of a thriller because it drudges on with superficial politics and it's not much of a drama because there's no emotional investment. Disappointing.

Fast-paced Fun
14 July 2018
24 Hours to Live is a quick action thriller that gets started right away and doesn't let up till it's done. Some of the action scenes are actually surprisingly cool. There's not much for characterization other than some archetypes, but everyone does a good job. It is a simple and efficient movie. It sort of reminded me of John Wick in the sense that it's a shoot 'em up movie.

So if you're looking for a quick, fun action movie, I'd say give this a try.

Fun Schlock
14 July 2018
By no means should you be taking a movie titled Hurricane Heist seriously. This is for the schlock crowd. Sure, it's played straight by the actors, but the humor comes from the sheer ridiculousness of the premise. It's silly and nonsensical, but it's a very well made movie-although the CG isn't good at parts (but maybe that's intentional). All the actors do a fine job. The pacing is good and I found myself actually really enjoying the final action scene.

So if you want a lighthearted b-movie I'd suggest giving it a shot.

Revenge (II) (2017)

Classy Trash
14 July 2018
Revenge, at its core, is an exploitation movie-it's disgusting, vile and violent-and absolutely fantastic. On a technical level everything shines. The beautiful desert landscape provides a nice setting and everything looks very clear and crisp. There isn't much for characterization, but that's not the point of it. And yes, the movie is legitimately hilarious at points for those that have a sick sense of humor. It is a generally slow movie, but I believe it was paced very well and it has some nice surrealist imagery peppered throughout.

If you like exploitation or slow burns or violence and/ or offbeat storytelling/humor, I'd say give it a shot.

I Guess Drama Films count as Horror Films Now
19 February 2016
To those looking for some good scares, don't look to this film. A family drama is what it actually is. Don't be fooled by the reviews calling it the greatest horror film of the year, of the decade, and so on. To even call this a horror film is beyond me. Undoubtedly, this film is visually appealing, with great cinematography and acting, but the film meanders for the entirety of its runtime, constantly fooling the audience into thinking something scary will actually happen--but no. This is style over substance, and the director seems to have fooled himself into thinking that this could suffice for a full length feature.

Save your time, save your money. Not even worth a rent.

Black Mass (2015)
1/10
A superficial, generic, by-the-numbers "Gangster" flick--What a joke.
20 September 2015
Black Mass is a waste of your time and money. DO NOT see this. The number of well-known actors used in this film is a damn shame because every single role is such a cardboard cutout that any lesser-known actor wouldn't have made a difference. Depp plays "Whitey" Bulger, and to constantly remind the audience that he's a real bad guy, he gives stone-cold, eye piercing looks, he throws in the necessary run of the mill curses, kills a few unremarkable people throughout and that's it. Don't expect any action or colorful, well-written characters. Yes, this is based off a true story, but, in the context of the film, there is no significance; it doesn't matter--it's been done a ton before and it adds absolutely nothing new or refreshing to the genre. Except for a couple of interesting subplots (which are all quickly brushed off and "resolved" by a single line of dialogue in a following scene), this film has nothing going for it. And it really is a shame; there are hints of a better film that shine through every once in a while during its seemingly forever-feeling run-time, but, that's not to be had. There's not much more to say because this film really doesn't have much going for it. DON'T go to see this--it really is THAT bad.

All the right kinds of bad.
13 August 2014
Going into this movie one should have low expectations; upon seeing it, I was thoroughly surprised by how much I liked it. But let this be clear--this is the type of movie that's so bad it's good. Despite virtually no story and the unfortunate 'found footage' style used throughout most of the film, a multitude of things actually make this pic redeemable. Dumb characters and idiotic stereotypes make for a good laugh; the storm itself provides for some surprisingly good visuals and actual intensity; and if you're able to forgive these characters for being so stupid, you might actually start to like them. At a runtime of 1 hour and 29 minutes, the film finishes relatively fast, concluding with a painful forced message about life. Overall, if you're into movies that are so bad that they're good, I'd highly recommend it. If you're into storm movies, then it's a decently satisfying film. But if you're looking for a good film, then this shouldn't even be in your consideration.
