Dive Club (2021)

Pure pabulum fluff more suited for pre-teen.
18 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Not sure why I watched this, since it was clearly labeled as TEEN. Turned out I wasted a few hours my life. To me it seemed more like a poorly written sub-teen version of BayWatch. The diving "finds" were so obviously fake that was cringeworthy. As to how they got from Russia to Australia - with a female pirate chasing them across 8000 miles of ocean did not make a lot of sense.

Two stars for being so bad
5 April 2021
If you ever wanted to see the worst war movie ever made, this is not it. This is the 2nd worst ever. Horrible dialogue, crappy CGI, fake storyline filled with propaganda.

So bad it's not even good-bad
20 September 2020
This is an older movie, but since it is still on streaming I wanted to review it. Some movies are so bad they are fun to watch - this is NOT one of those movies. I am kind of a science nerd, and I saw at least 981 science fails before I lost count.

But the main fail was "where did all that water come from"? There is a fixed amount of water on Earth, so if enough evaporated from the oceans to cause that much rain, the sea levels would drop drastically. (this is the same fact that shoots down the original Noah fable).

How was this mess a blockbuster in China?
15 August 2020
While not the worst SF movie I have seen, it is for sure the most illogical and total science-fail one (except maybe for one where they were using Sonar in space). The dialogue was filled with nothing but heroic cliches and overused tropes.

This movie is a prime candidate for Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Worst Movie Ever?
15 August 2020
Not quite the worst, but very close. Aside from the bad acting, bad dialogue, and science/logic fails too numerous to mention, it was overall just BORING. I am no fan of faith-based shows, but even this is the bottom of the barrel.

Not bad enough to be good, but really bad
24 July 2020
This seems to be a throw back to those awful dubbed kung fu movies of the 60's and 70's - but then they at least had an excuse in the very low budgets. This on the other hand is just awful - totally made up history, hyperbolic tropes about racism, excessively fake martial arts, and a host of other issues.

Too much propaganda, story makes no sense.
14 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The first thing that struck me was just how preachy it was. Reminded me a lot of another movie which was just as bad - John Wayne's Green Berets. The constant barrage of 1960's clips was irritating and added nothing to the story. And the story itself was full of cliches and rather nonsensical. Too much rah-rah not enough story - for example why show the meeting with his long lost daughter and then just drop the entire subject?

A horror movie with little horror, and even less logic.
23 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
For all the raves, I expected much better. I found the plot rather boring with very little originality. Acting was OK, but nothing to rave about. But my biggest problem was just the overall TOTAL STUPIDITY of the entire plot. The aliens managed to build a FTL starship, yet have zero technology while roaming around eating people and critters. they are highly susceptible to certain sounds - of course NONE of those ever occur in nature, and the 200 or so country governments and military could not figure that out? Give me a break. And BTW, where did all that sand come from, and how did they get it without making noise?

Best Korean TV Drama in Years
29 July 2017
I have to confess that I am a k-drama addict, but that said, this is by far one of the best Korean TV dramas ever - surpassing not just the usual run of Asian dramas, but also most US TV dramas.

This show is from a new writer, her first TV script. I think it will not her last. The main star for me is Bae Doona, who I first came across in "Sense 8". The show is absent many of the far too common k-drama tropes that make so many of them seem rather silly - like dozens of totally incompetent cops, the stupid sidekick that is supposed to be funny but seldom is, and several others. A very tightly written script with almost no "WTF?" moments.

This movie is a travesty.
17 December 2016
Of all the Star Wars movies and shows to date, this is by far the worst ever. It ranks right up (down) there with Independence Day Resurgence. End to end recycled clichés, crappy CGI, same old re-re-recycled plot. And those are the good parts. How many freaking times can Scotty "reroute power" in a ship that has been blown to bits and magically make it all work? It is so full of plot holes that if it were sold as Swiss Cheese you would have an empty package. Most of the acting is stupendously bad, the funny lines are not funny, the tense moments are as tense as watching paint dry. This movie apparently had a lot of Chinese/CCP censorship attached to it also, as anything even remotely controversial is simply not there.

A fact based drama about the organ harvesting trade in China
17 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This follows the story of a Canadian techie in China to install improvements to the Great Firewall of China, and a woman that is imprisoned based only on the fact that she is a Falun Gong practitioner. It exposes one of the uglier sides of China under the Communist Party - "transplant tourism" for money. Political prisoners were and still are routinely killed for organ harvesting. The acting and not-quite-mega-budget production values are not the best, but the message is overpowering despite those flaws. Easy to see why China has blocked this movie, and has gone so far as to pressure many movie theaters to not show it.

SF movies should have at least some real science
18 June 2016
I have to admit I only made it about 2/3 of the way through this. Aside from the poor acting and multiple plot holes that others have mentioned, the supposed "science" was just awful, and in parts sounded more like some internet conspiracy garbage. What stood out was the spiel on how Tesla had apparently been murdered by "Big Edison" to keep his free power broadcasting a secret - something that seems to have come right off the pages of Info Wars. And of course all the other participants in the plot just automatically bought into to it without question. If what are supposed to be the worlds smartest people buy into such crap without question, it is not "science" - it is voodoo.

In the finest Goebbels tradition.
22 March 2016
I had no plans to watch this, but it showed up on Amazon Prime as a freebie for members one day.

In short, this is just awful. Aside from all the really bad science that others have mentioned, there was so much that simply made ZERO sense. You spend more time facepalming and thinking "who the F*** would ever actually DO that?" than actually paying attention to the movie. Acting was mediocre at best, and the plot was all over the place and full of holes.

And seriously - a farmer refusing to sell to her because she might be an undercover spy for (Monsanto, no doubt)? And why couldn't she just go to her local Walmart and buy organic?

Popular, But Totally Anti-Science
11 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
First off, you have to take a look at who produced this fiction. Though labeled as a "documentary", it is far from that. The producer - Gary Null - is an anti-science, anti-GMO, anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist. He has made other claims such as "HIV does not cause AIDS". It is worth pointing out that Gary Null was almost killed by using one of his own supplements that he sells. The movie presents a host of "experts" - all of the ones that I checked out are as reliable as Gary himself, making a business out of quack products and fear mongering.

The movie itself is filled with misinformation, exaggerations, outright lies, and conspiracy theories. I am not going to bother refuting all the scientific and factual errors in the movie - others (some on YouTube) have already done this. My advice is to take the contents of this movie with a huge grain of salt and a lot of skepticism.

Flawed but entertaining
8 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is not the worst SF TV drama ever, as some have said. Neither is the best (that would probably be Firefly).

There are numerous really dumb plot devices, such as the over the top teen angst and Lord of the Flies trope. And you have to wonder how a bunch of kids who have never even seen a plant bigger than a hydroponic tomato all of a sudden have l33t survival and forestry skills.

But even with all the flaws I find the show entertaining, perhaps partly because I am a disaster/apocalypse movie freak. I find the overall premise and plot line interesting in spite of it's errors. Network nearly always does SF badly (such as Under the Dome, one of the worst), so it is perhaps just that this is better than most that makes it watchable.

Plus for using a real Navy ship, minus for dialogue
7 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I have mixed feelings on this, partly because I have a bias towards disaster movies, no matter how bad, and partly because they seem to have (mostly) gotten much of how a real Navy ship operates, at least technically. But there were errors in the scenarios - like what does radio silence have to do with listening - are they saying that nobody on the entire ship had a portable radio that could pick up shortwave broadcasts? But.. The dialogue has way too much stock fake heroism and inspirational speech stuff, and all the standard clichés. In my 10 years in the Navy, I never heard a captain makes such speeches, even in combat zones. It was the standard in every "what do we do now" movie or show - "let's all pull together etc." speech.

One of the most underrated documentaries ever?
30 March 2014
I actually watched this reluctantly because someone wanted to see it, and ended up loving it. Not for the plot - there really is no plot (documentaries do that at times) except for her voyage, and the events leading up to it. To me it was just amazing that a young girl could do such an adventure alone, while others of her age were much more worried about how many followers they had on Twitter.

Much of the photography sucks (not like a cell phone is a real professional camera) - but that also adds to the feeling of realism, and pushes home the fact that there were no followers, no camera crews around - she was totally on her own. Unlike so many of the pseudo-documentaries this one is not filled with fake drama.

Most over rated Disney film in decades
30 March 2014
Just watched this on PPV, and wasted $6. Among all the recent animation films I have seen, such as Ice Age and similar, this was one of the worst.

It was totally formula, and not even a very good formula. I have seen Anime where the plot made more sense. Nothing is explained about WHY any of the characters would do various things - like why did those "loving parents" just lock the sister up in a room instead of .. you know, maybe trying to cure it or find out WHY??

The dialogue was stilted and the plot totally predictable, but the songs were 3rd rate at best - reminiscent of really bad musicals from the 50's. The basic plot made no sense, none of the characters did anything that real and/or normal people would do (even in a fairy tale). The overall plot resembled a Korean makjang rom-com more than a Disney movie. The plot had so many holes in that it resembled Swiss cheese.

There have been a lot of good animated films out in the past few years, but this is not one of them. The only reason I can see for the initial very high ratings is that they were given by die hard Disney fans, who would be far more inclined to see the movie in theaters as soon as it came out.

One of the worst Die Hard type movies ever
7 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
At first I thought this might at least be a good action movie, but it even failed at that, with far too much fakery. There is just so much wrong with the premise and story that it would take another full movie just to list them all. The really sappy clichéd dialogue was kind of the final nail in this pseudo-patriot fest.

There are dozens of things wrong with the story - most have been listed by previous commenters, but the absolute worst for me was the idea that the US would let most of Asia plunge into a war that would kill millions just for one person - president or otherwise. Besides the supposed terrorists - which were never explained - even the car wreck on the bridge was never explained. To say that the writer/director has an abysmal understanding of military weapons would be too kind.

Fictional dramatization about a real person
13 August 2013
This is a nice to watch "feel good" movie about the trials and success of a girl that was deaf from around age two. I watched this when it first came out, and there was a lot of press coverage in the Japanese press - a lot of it negative, mainly for it's glamorous portrayal of the Japanese hostess club scene.

Unfortunately, the key word here is that quite a bit of the movie is pure fiction, and it ignores or glosses over a lot of the less savory parts of her story. Somewhat interesting for it's view into the super-expensive Ginza Mizu Shobai world, but it only portrays the glamor and little or none of the dark side.

"Hitsodan" refers to written communications, in this case written notes, and is a key part of the story and movie. However, according to nearly all Japanese press reports that is largely fictional. While you have to give kudos to anyone that could get that far with that handicap, the movie itself should be taken as entertainment, not fact.

Excellent in portraying historic events, but...
27 July 2013
This series somewhat surprised me in how well it showed some of the problems with pride and prejudice on both sides. The stigma on Japanese first and second generation that were repatriated to Japan is almost never covered by any Japanese media.

But it was not without its' flaws: 1. While there are quite a few comments about how bad the atomic bomb was, nothing at all is mentioned about the Pearl Harbor attack except for the fact that it happened.

2. I guess because nearly all the characters were played by Japanese actors (no real Isei, Nisei, or Sansei) much of the American dialog does not ring true. Probably due to the writing, which was also totally Japanese done. They pretty much totally ignored the fact that nearly all Nisei and later generations could speak perfect English - and the fact that many do not speak Japanese.

3. It put forth the view that nearly all Japanese-Americans at that time were far more "Japanese" than they were American, which is simply not true. The loyalty and/or attachment to America in fact ran across the whole spectrum - a fair percentage in fact considered themselves betrayed by Japan.

Starts out OK but really slows down after first 3 episodes.
7 May 2012
Unfortunately, this series starts out fairly well, but then about 1/3 of the way through it really starts going downhill.

If the series had stuck to the main plot and characters it would have been OK, but the introduction of never-resolved subplots, and totally extraneous characters ended up spoiling it for me. For example, far too much time was spent on the totally air-headed presidents daughter, who added nothing at all to the story, and is left at a dead end. Flashbacks were way overdone - it seemed like the object was to fill up space rather than advance the plot.

In general, the main plot and most subplots are so full of holes and unresolved issues that have to wonder if 3 hours or so was assembled from outtakes to fill the alloted number of episodes.

If you are a Korean Drama fan, "Lie to Me" and "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho" are much better choices.

The series started out like "The Dirty Dozen" and ended like the purple dinosaur "Barney Goes to School" video.

Pointless, clueless screaming women
19 December 2011
Not only is the movie full of plot holes, it leaves loose ends all over the place. And what the hell are herds of live cows doing in a factory that is supposed to be abandoned?

The characters just seem to wander around aimlessly and get killed off one by one (wow, that is sure a new plot line..). They cannot seem to protect themselves in any way, even though an abundance of possible weapons are lying around all over. Overall, I get the feeling that a lot of the wrong parts were edited out of the movie.

In short, this movie is only worth watching at 2 am when your only other choice is watching vacuum cleaner infomercials.
