The Violent Kind (2008)
strange but good art film
Feel like I watched a completely different film than the first poster. Had to double check to make sure I had the right page. Reminded me of seventies art film with terrific performances. Some may not care for the obvious digital video look of the film however I felt like it was somewhat like a documentary. Fragments of events that powerfully conclude.
The film begins with a soldier having come home from Iraq. Unfortunately I've had several friends serve - which led me to watch the film. It really isn't about the Iraq war, but rather the damage done to young souls. That and a heavy duty past drive the story forward. Odd ball local characters only make matters worse, as the lead character tries to patch the lives of his father and his wife back together. The dad is played by the terrific as always John Savage. The son is played by Kirk Harris who is grimly intense in the film. The wife is played by Irina Bjorklund. The film also has the brother from the True Adventures of Old Christine as a wildly gay young man.
As a film lover - I would compare it somewhat to a Terrence Malick film. More lyrical than a direct narrative.
The Thin Red Line (1998)
One of my favorite films!
One of my favorite films of all time. Has a lyrical beauty that draws the viewer into the heartfelt stories of the soldiers.
Loved the performances the actors. Maybe my only criticism would be the many celebrity cameos.
The sheer terror of the battle up the grassy hill was truly one of the best ever accomplished in film. Eerily quiet before all hell breaks loose.
The film is built upon dynamic cinematography and a terrific score. While I rarely enjoy flashbacks this film used them has fragments of the characters minds as they lived through the hell of war.
All time classic in my book.
