Surprises... on the downside !
3 December 2015
Cem Yilmaz has a great reputation in Turkey. But seems he forgets that great reputation creates great expectations. I think this is the biggest problem Yilmaz faces now.

I have seen Ali Baba and the Seven Dwarfs and I can say that it didn't surprised me at all. I do not mean that its a typical "full of fun" CY movie, unfortunately the opposite way round.

First of all, the story itself is so poor, nothing interesting with screenplay. Its like CY had some jokes in his mind and created a story only to put those jokes in it.

Another problem with characters. I did not understand what some characters really do in the movie, why do they exist, what would be the lose if those characters do not exist etc etc.

Looks like CY found a formula for his movies somethings like:

Find some jokes + Create a simple script (No need to be smart but should contain everything your audiences expect) + Choose correct actors & actresses (The ones who already tested and liked by fans) + Put CY name on it = Collect your money

Simple but unfortunately there are some elements are missing in the formula. Such as, story, creating a character, plot, intelligence of viewers (The worst thing about this movie is that CY does not care about his fan's intelligence. He thinks that everybody is ready to eat whatever CY cooks. Of course, its so wrong.)

CY makes films one after another. Don't know if because he has many things to tell or want to earn as much as possible or ... just don't know. What I know is that CY may go really down if keeps following the same strategy. This would be a shame for a genius, so I hope he wakes up to himself immediately.

As a last word about the movie, its just a simple comedy. If I knew that before then Id not pay for it but wait until its on TV.

Far from expectations - unfortunately in negative way
31 October 2011
I just watched movie after waiting for months. As I am a Behzat Ç. series fan, I need to say that the movie is not good as I expected.

Its just a longer version of what we see on TV, so even I can not call this as a movie.

Similar to its TV version, the weakest point is the screenplay. They just wrote a simple screenplay and decked it out with acting, slang etc.

Besides its negative points, the performance of Erdal Beşikçioğlu is noticeable again. Honestly I am not happy with the movie and looking for new season on TV to decide to follow or quit watching it.

I did not see it but I know its a bad movie !
30 July 2010
I stopped watching Mr. Night's movies I think after watching either Signs or Village. Actually it does not matter because all his movies are the same as they use the success of 6th Sense which was the only OK movie of him.

If I have nothing else to do and have a Shyamalan movie then I would sit on my chair and stay there by doing nothing for 2 hours but not watch another Shyamalan trash.

I will definitely not watch the Airbender just because of the director.

Oh my god, I remember the girl in the water.. I need to forget it immediately....

One of the worst movie I have ever seen
3 January 2010
I really do not know what to say. Bad screenplay, bad acting, bad editing etc etc. I cant believe how I could wait until the end. This is just a waste of time. So please stay away if your time is valuable. I did not understand what they are talking about or what this movie really tells. You wait until the end just because you expect some surprise but what happens? Absolutely nothing.. You definitely know what is coming. Acting.. My god I have no idea about acting but I am sure that I would act much better then all of those guys. I don't want to talk about meaningless erotic scenes .. My god.. Everything without and exception is so bad.

Thats all.

Shows the meaning of directing
26 April 2009
Nuri Bilge Ceylan shows us how an awful screenplay turns to a good movie in a professional director's hand. I think he deserved all those award because of that reason.

Overall acting was good. Especially those two Yavuz Bingol and Ercan Kesal who are not actors in real (Bingl is a musician and Kesal is a doctor) were remarkable.

By the way, to put a dead child in a movie to support the physiological atmosphere and subject of the movie was a good idea. But still I did not like the form of the child as he was too scary to be a part the movie.

So, 0 for the screenplay, 6 for performers and 8 for the director.

Not a Comedy
11 February 2009
Osmanli Cumhuriyeti is basically not a comedy but a drama.

There are some funny stuff in the movie but the dramatic side is much heavier. I felt like the author (Gani Mujde) wants to tell an interesting story together with some fun but he fails to combine that Sultan's loneliness with the fun.

Actually the movie would be much better if there is no comedy parts in it or would be a good comedy if the loneliness would not have been told that much.

But still I recommend this movie if you want to watch some drama and if you like Ata Demirer who acts quite good in the movie.

Simplicity is the best !
11 February 2009
What I heard from most watchers is that everybody found somethings from their own life in Issiz Adam. They say that the movie is amazing just because catches you from your heart and mind like it tells your own life but not Alper and Ada's.To be honest, I definitely do not have the same feeling. What I think is that the movie is purely simple and that is why everybody finds somethings in it. Most of us try to find the real meaning of the scenes, speeches etc in movies but with Issiz Adam; many people do overlook while trying to find somethings deep.

I could not understand what Alper wants also why his actions are always fulsome. What he wants and why? You find no answer in the movie. On the other hand, Ada looks like well experienced on relations with men but how she could fall in love with that bombastic guy? Can we just say that "because the love is somethings like this"? Sorry I do not agree.

Well, besides the story and acting, the scenes and songs are really beautiful. So I recommend this movie to the lovers of oldies and to the people who feel lonely in their life.

Sonbahar (2008)

Why?
10 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Without any discrimination, there are some clichés nearly in all the movies. Some movies have one of those clichés and some of them -like Sonbahar- have many more.

First of all the story of the movie! As we all know that there are Vietnam veterans returned to USA and had serious psychological and social problems in their home towns. Finally we fed up after watching tens of movies over the years. Honestly, there is no need to see another one because there is nothing left to know about the situation of those veterans. So if you want to make another suffering Vietnam veteran movie then you need somethings really but really good reason to do it. Otherwise you better to sit down and look for another project. The situation is the same with Sonbahar. There are many movies in Turkey based on a story of some youngs who killed, tortured or at least jailed for long time just because of their thoughts and good wishes for their country. Of course it is depressing to see what they really had while there were fighting, in the jail or their life after the jail etc but again, it is enough. We know what and why happened to these people and Sonbahar does not tell anything different or interesting at all. By the way some critics say that the movie about F-Type prisons -which we all deny as they are fully out of prisoner's/human rights- but I found nothing about F-type prisons in the movie. There are some footages about it like the one in the beginning and sometimes during the movie but there are meaning less if you are not familiar or do not know what and why exactly happened to the prisoners in that prison in Istanbul.

A young man returns to his hometown after having serious health problems in the jail that he was put cause of his political actions. He faces up to himself until he dies. What an interesting story!! Clichés over clichés come one by one during the movie, having the story itself as the biggest one. Similar to many other movies, a person knows that he will die soon and he wants to do the most important things before he passes away. This is what Yusuf also does. He drinks, goes to the mountain in the winter -which is very dangerous- meets with old friends, fights with himself in his mind, becomes close to a woman etc etc etc which are all simple and needless. Another cliché is "dying just after the happening of the one that was waited for". What Yusuf does is, he makes a bagpipe and when he finishes the mouthpiece as a last part, he dies. How strange ! By the way, he has serious difficulties to breath but how he can go to mountain, how he can have sex with a prostitute and finally how he can play a bagpipe with these lungs!! Whatever...

There many other things about the movie but I want to say somethings as a last critic which bored me most. The relation between Yusuf and a prostitute. He meets with that girl and starts fighting to himself later in the movie. The situation is that the girl is from Georgia which was a part of old Soviet Socialist block that means she is a symbol of the politic view of Yusuf. He feels like a ping pong ball in thought as he wants her as a woman but also can not decide how to act by the political side as he is a socialist. What I felt while watching the movie is that the prostitute character does not fit to the movie. It is like the director decided to put her in the movie to tell the changes of the hometown and Yusuf's psychology at political side. But we do not now who she is, what is it going on with her kid etc. She is just there as nobody and have some relation with Yusuf.

So, there is almost nothing interesting to me with this movie. If you have time and like some pastoral scenes then I recommend it. Otherwise it is just a simple movie.
