Saint X (2023)
Who the hell is voting on this?
I just don't get how this is a 5.4 rating currently. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion but IMO this show is a solid 7.5 so far so i'm giving it an 8/10.
The cast is good, some better than others, and the story is interesting enough for you to keep wanting to watch the next episode. It's far from perfect, I think the editing could be improved it's too jumpy for my liking tho I do like the various timeline approach.
Not sure if it's going to be dragged out a bit too long will have to wait and see, but so far am enjoying it. Give it a go, if you are into true crime documentaries/shows then this will hook you, either way it's one of the better new series out there right now.
Update: After 2 more episodes what I feared is becoming true .....it's starting to drag and I'm losing interest all the storylines involved now although initially interesting don't have enough weight to be dragged out, i just want to know how this ends now, downgrading by a point.
Mayor of Kingstown (2021)
Just keeps getting better!
I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to do so for this series. I'm going to keep it short and sweet, this series so far is brilliant. Mood, style, acting, directing, story and grit are all top notch and compelling.
Just the opening title sequence gets my blood pumping every episode wondering what deliciousness in terms of tv entertainment awaits me.
Season 2 has been a little more of a slow burner compared to season 1 i think but that just reflects the time and things needed to get done in the story itself so that's fine.
I've never been a big Jeremy Renner fan but I am now. He is just stellar as the lead here and is lucky to have co-stars who are also pulling their weight and helping turn this into a masterclass of tv series making.
Please don't f this up guys, it's going so well! ;)
3022 (2019)
Pleasantly surprised!!
I can't remember the last time I wrote a review on IMBD but was compelled to review this after watching.
This is no way a 4.5/10 film I've watched thousands of films over the years and went into watching this with absolutely no expectations whatsoever.
I was expecting to be turning it off after the 15 minute mark due to it being really poor quality but it completely surprised me and kept me engaged and entertained until the credits started rolling. Acting was solid the story was intriguing and well paced out. The sets and special effects were very good considering the budget and above all the relationship n chemistry between the 2 main characters was believable and emotive.
I would give this a solid 8/10 and would happily watch again at some point, well worth your time to see this which is what I believe to be a way above average sci-fi. Very pleasantly surprised!
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Thoroughly entertaining and finally the real deal!
I'm not sure what kind of Star Wars 'perfection' the naysayers of this show want and frankly I don't care. Compared to 90% of what came after the original trilogy this show along with the Mandalorian is what I always felt Star Wars was truly all about. Every episode is entertaining and a wonder to watch, it feels like you are in the true Star Wars universe and not some slapped together Mish mash of nonsense. Great characters, great story, action and wonder, I can't thank the creators of these shows enough for finally bringing the heart of Star Wars back to our screens! Fantastic!
The Big Wedding (2013)
$35million to make this excuse for comedy! What a waste!
A big fat paycheck obviously drew in the big names here and for that my respect for them sadly goes down. The storyline was so flimsy it was embarrassing, the performances could have been phoned in, the gags fell flat and that's about all there is to say about this film. A waste of talent and an even bigger waste of money. Shame....
Freaks (2018)
I must have missed something....
So the multitude of rave reviews here for this film persuaded me to take a look. To be honest I wish I hadn't bothered. One reviewer gave this a 9/10 and their title is 'Pretty enjoyable ride'... well wow I guess some people give 9's and 10's for every so so film they watch but I don't.
I almost gave up watching at the half way mark but gave it more of a chance only to be completely underwhelmed by the end with 10 minutes left on the clock I turned it off....there's just nothing that interesting here, the story line is just so drawn out and never really makes you care about anyone or anything much that is happening. As a 30 minute episode of something like the Twilight Zone it could have been interesting and worth a watch but with a 105 minute run-time the whole thing really drags. I would recommend to go and watch the first couple of seasons of Heroes if you haven't seen that t.v show and avoid this ....4/10
In the Tall Grass (2019)
Screaming and shouting....then more screaming and shouting....
If you love to hear people of all ages screaming and shouting at the top of their lungs, pretty much for the entirety of a movie then this will be a treat for your eardrums!
All I remember from watching this film-
1. Tall grass
2. People
3. A big stone
4. SCREAMING AND SHOUTING!
5. My headache by the end....
2/10
The Signal (2014)
Felt compelled to write a quick review about this great sci-fi movie
We all know by now or at least we should is that what one person gets out of watching any particular film will not be exactly the same as what another person gets. Similarly we will all rate the same film differently for an infinite amount of reasons, that being said I will give my opinion on the movie based on how it affected me and in comparison to the thousands of films I have watched previous to this one which have also affected me to a lesser of greater degree.
First thing to say would be that I knew little about the film before watching it and I think with most films that's probably the best way to approach it as there are a couple of big reveals towards the end and knowing these beforehand would spoil what I thought was a great even if some people have said predictable ending. I have also read a fair bit on these boards about how this film heavily borrows from other films, and yes I guess it does, but you know what I was enjoying it so much from beginning to end that I really didn't care about where the influences of the film had come from and although I have seen hundreds of sci-fi films over the years I never once thought 'ahh come on that bit is such a blatant copy from 'whatever' film', but then I don't generally go into watching a film with that frame of mind as every film is unique in its own ways even remakes and reboots...
I am not saying that this is the best film I have ever seen but I can say it is up there in my top 5 sci-fi films from at least the last couple if not 5 years. The acting was all round impressive,I thought Laurence Fishburne turned out one of his most convincing roles in years and Brenton Thwaites at times reminded me of a young Brad Pitt. The lighting, sound, camera work, editing and effects were all very effective and expertly executed. The story itself held my attention throughout the entirety of the film as the pace was spot on and you never really knew where it was heading and those two things if done well are very important to me in a movie.
I have just finished watching it for the second time, this time in the company of other people and they thoroughly enjoyed it as did I again, and believe I could easily watch it a third and forth time with the same enjoyment, which in my book is also a big positive for any film. So maybe you will like it, maybe you wont, maybe you will pick hundreds of holes in it and maybe you wont but all I can say in summary is that I found it to be 100% entertaining throughout and I really hope they can come up with a sequel which is at least on par to this because if they do I will definitely be tuning into The Signal part 2 !! :)
The Bourne Legacy (2012)
Why?
I spent the last hour of the film thinking what is the point of all this apart from maybe lamely setting up another sequel and wondering why Edward Norton agreed to take part in such mediocrity. In fact I was thinking about these things so much I nearly missed the end chase scene which in my opinion was a late addition in a desperate bid to finally add some action to to a poor excuse to an action film. Overall poor, very poor. The $125 Million budget does nothing to help the lack of storyline, direction, suspense and I cannot recall a film where I have felt so little towards the lead character.... I could go on and on but I wont as I have wasted enough time in viewing this film.
