Oasis (2017)
terrible execution with too many flaws
The premise of the show, though nothing original, is inherently in a category that demands justice from lovers of sci-fi "drama." The pilot however is a severe disappointment.
The most terrible transgression is that it seems either the original novel "The Book Of Strange New Things" or this adaptation is written by someone with not even a modicum of scientific knowledge. When you start a pilot with a planet "across the galaxy," I demand to know at-least a snippet of the back story.
How was this planet discovered? What technology have we developed to reach this planet? All we saw was a rocket... a freaking rocket... how did this rocket take our protagonist to the other side of the galaxy? How did we discover a planet on the other side of the galaxy and apparently nowhere else that is capable of supporting human life? This planet magically or by happenstance has 1g, 1 atm, a magnetic field of equivalent strength to earth, it seems to have no indigenous vegetation however there is breathable oxygen. How can there be oxygen without vegetation, how is there no microbial life at all on this planet with oxygen and liquid water? How are the new inhabitants on this planet using GPS tags, without satellites orbiting this planet to provide GPS coverage? How is communication with earth possible, when this planet is on the other side of the galaxy? If it only cost $100 million to send someone to this planet why are there not more qualified people on this planet already? Why is there no supra-governmental organization or a corporation in- charge of this colonization? Why has humanity left its future in the hand of one or two clearly unqualified and uninspired leaders? In what realistic scenario does humanity on this brink of collapse and having discovered a life line, would put any individual in charge with no accountability and an abysmal support or administrative system on the other side of the galaxy.
It was almost frustrating to watch the pilot. While I was rooting for the old king of the North, this is as terrible and as badly explained of a "sci-fi" show as one could imagine - not in 2017. Maybe 30 years ago when the general public's scientific/cosmological awareness was far more minimalist than at the present, maybe "Oasis" can get a pass on these topics. It is however simply unacceptable in 2017, and it is not acceptable to simply wait with abated breath and move the unanswered questions into the mystery column, because quite simply if humanity is colonizing a planet on the other end of the galaxy for the very first time - it is absolutely critical that you explain or give at least the slightest of hint as to how this planet was discovered, how it can be reached, how does it have Earths gravity, atmospheric pressure, magnetic field, how does it have breathable oxygen and water?
Unless it explained in subsequent episode that a wormhole was discovered x number of years ago and for some reason that was edited out of the first episode, or some sort of mysterious time traveling has taken place and Oasis is in-fact Earth or something a little bit more crazy than that. I see no possible angle by which the errors and omissions would not lead to a laughable and humiliating cancellation.
New York (2009)
The greatest movie of all time
This could have been a half decent thriller, instead it is anything but insulting. It tries to walk a thin line, but at several points the mistakes are so critical and for the lack of a better word so bad that you just have to shake your head in disgust.
Forget about the romantic glistering recollection by Neil Mukesh (Omar) which is so off par the general theme of the movie. Forget about the fact that after finding out that your spouse is a known terrorist - has shot people in the head, blown warehouses, is conspiring with known terrorists to blow up metropolitan landmarks - you still repeat the following dialogues several times (paraphrased): "dont kill Samir.. he has not done anything wrong yet... you have to give me a guarantee that you wont kill him... he can still come back to me."
Really?
And this is not even the worst part about the movie, bad dialogues and an utter divide from the world of Jack Bauer, is to be expected. What is intolerable however is the fact that Kabir Khan (our genius director), seem to think that America is the land of bread and honey. Throughout the movie (paraphrased again): "only in America this could happen... that a Muslim kid can play happily with other white kids... that a Muslim FBI agent can investigate a supposed high priority case." It is demeaning to propose that Muslims should be "grateful" to their adopted country simply because they are Muslims and accept the second class treatment in exchange for the American dream. At the end of these scenes that is all your psyche can process when you are continuously bombarded by these notions. Why even bring these up? For any Muslim living in the United States it is difficult to walk away from this movie without thinking of yourself as a street urchin who should be extraordinarily grateful for even living in New York.
Really?
America has made terrible mistakes in the past and it needs to be forgiven. Check. America is the land were dreams come true. Check. If I was a cynical person, I might start thinking that the movie wishes to shed some light on the issue of torture, like water boarding with urine, hanging human beings by their wrists, stripping them naked and handcuffing them in a dog cage, only to quietly shrug these acts under the carpet. Yes terrorism is wrong. We all know it. It is f***ing ridiculous to watch a 2 1/2 hour movie preaching this. Mr. Khan, do you not think that it would have been appropriate to preach, for more than 3 minutes when the camera was on, that f***ing torture is wrong? And no matter how boldly I try to dare, I cannot understand the end. On one hand we have a dedicated C.O. of a sleeper cell who for all intensive purposes has completed his mission - bombs are planted, triggers have been activated and the finger is on the button - but still love saves the day. It makes me feel so warm inside to know that all those teary eyed teenage girl must have wept insatiably when John Abraham lay dead with the women for which he did not pull the trigger.
Really?
Please do not watch this movie. I have to give some props though. Nawazuddin Siddiqui who plays Zilgai is brilliant. Katrina and Neil Mushesh are good. Irfan Khan character is so terrible that nothing good can creep out of it. John Abraham performance up until the last 10 min deserves a tip of the hat. Again please do not watch this movie. But if you are going to, because hey! who would not like to watch a movie with Kaif and Abraham in New York about 9/11, please do not be so inundated by the fact that someone has finally made a Bollywood movie about 9/11 so as to overlook the insulting and inflammatory stance of this movie.
