Halloween (2007)
Improvement on previous versions
Rob Zombie has taken the classic film and given it a much needed gore update (its not flooded with the stuff but its there) Not quite as good as Devil's Rejects but still adequate. The story has been added to by showing us Michael Myers as he grows up but essentially its the same killer, killing on Halloween night. You know what to expect but seeing the kid grow up to be what he becomes gives a more chilling aspect to the story. I would say that this is a good remake overall and would recommend. And the fact that my girlfriend wouldn't watch it is always a good sign! I really want to see more of Zombies talent as a horror writer and director.
Martyrs (2008)
Wow
I love a good torture horror film and by god this was great. I usually find it hard going with foreign subtitled films being Scottish (apart from City of God) but this was just fantastic.
Starting out it appears to be about a couple of girls seeking revenge on something that happened during childhood, but the plot was a lot deeper that that. I loved the twist and my feelings during the film changed from boredom frankly (this was just another horror revenge film) to horror and disgust to another feeling that I cant quite sum up.
I watched this just before going to bed and I couldn't sleep for a couple of hours as I couldn't stop thinking about it. A sign of a great film if it leaves you feeling shocked and surprised.
I consider this better than Hostel and Saw films.
Hit and Run (2009)
Starts good....
I think the rating of 5.1 is a fair reflection of this film. Drinking and driving as we all know isn't good. But this is a whole different kinda bad. As previously described - a stalker shocker, which most of the way through I enjoyed but after a while things just didn't make much sense. Where did he come from?? I like these sorta films normally, and to be fair the acting wasn't bad but something just went wrong, maybe I'm being too harsh as there were some good driving sequences (with a twist) and well shot. I didn't expect the ending, but I didn't really care too much by this time, it was a bit like the writers gave up and asked some of his/her kids to help out.
If you like suspenseful horror stalker type films then you may enjoy this, as my partner doesn't and she didn't like this.
A couple of B movie gory bits as well. Not sure how to summarise, make up you own mind.
Nobel Son (2007)
Really good
Somehow I expected this to be a bit of a long shot and wasn't anticipating much. However this was way off. With some great acting (Alan Rickman) as the Nobel Prize winner and each of the other main characters. A real gem which I am having trouble with describing, without giving anything away. The story revolves around the son of the prize winner and his kidnapping which has been cleverly planned. The events take some unexpected twists and turns and ends with a bang or a pop. A great film throughout and a brilliant ending with some super actors. Watch this if you get a chance as its one of the best thrillers I've seen this year. Enjoy
Windcroft (2007)
Average to good
I was pleasantly surprised with this film, as its 4.4 rating isn't too hot. The characters at first annoyed me slightly, but I was intrigued as I could feel something building up. In fact the main character is rather odd but there may be a reason for that as the story unfolds. I would describe this film as a thriller with some psychology thrown in. It soon becomes apparent that there is more to this than just a trip to the family farm, and it will keep you gripped.
As the film unfolds some odd things become clear and its not clever but somehow very enjoyable.
Persist with it and you will enjoy, there isn't a huge cast but there doesn't need to be
I quite liked it and its better than its rating at the moment.
Babysitter Wanted (2007)
Don't waste my time
Who writes these reviews. Thanks to them I wasted 1.5 hrs of my time. I do like a good horror and its a shame as this is not one. There are some so called gory bits but on the whole you have to like crap horror, poor scripts and annoying characters to enjoy this. I even forwarded to the end. The start was quite promising with some suspense, ooh, whats going to happen and to who? But very quickly it became obvious that I was watching a real bad horror and not bad in the good sense. My original thoughts on what will happen really didn't matter anymore as I quickly lost the will to live but persisted for almost 80 minutes, by this point I'd had enough and flicked to the end. And its open for a sequel so all you fans, careful what you wish for...
