Irreversi (2010)
A really touching drama - great script
Imagine a rich, ambitious and handsome man surprises his successful, beautiful and intelligent girlfriend with a horse ride in a picture-book landscape. Furthermore he prepared a forbiddingly expensive ring hidden in the girls horses' mane and when she notices it he gets on his knees immediately, begging for marriage. The weather is great, too. Sounds too good for reality and it definitely is. This is one way in which the narrative brilliantly deconstructs Adam and Linda's love every minute of this film. And suddenly you understand, that this couples relationship is based on lies and threads, which determined their destiny. The brighter the sun, the darker the shadow. Great feelings becoming even more touching by the convincing acting of Ian Bohen and Mei Melancon. Unusually for a model turned actress, supermodel Estella Warren shows a good performance, scoring as Linda's best friend.
Midnight Movie (2008)
Great splatter crossing the line between fiction and reality!!!
Midnight Movies? Whats this? These are sleazy/bloody-trash-films shown after the regular screenings - definitely not made for kids. These films, Quentin Tarantino was really mad about in his youth. And this is exactly how this special Midnight Movie starts: An old cinema somewhere in a suburb, some bored teenagers, some violence-addicted freaks and, well, literally lots of blood. So far, so well known. But this Midnight Movie is not from the 70ies. Proving lots of intelligence this film really plays with your fears: What if the Killers suddenly appears right next to you? What if you leave the screening-room and you just can't get rid of him? What if he is not only in your nightmares? In this movie, not only girls are supposed to have these fears it really crosses the thin line between fiction and reality. And like with all horror films, you need you remind yourself this is just a film. But in this case, not resisting the fear, is deadly.
The Dogwalker (2002)
Great sensitive drama with precise characters!
Elli, a lost, unsteady and depressive women, stranded in Los Angeles. On the one hand, she luckily escaped from her violent boyfriend, on the other hand she is still the same victim, got robbed, beaten and almost raped. But within all the scum she found a friend: the old, grumpy Dogwalker Betsy, who teaches her that you at first have to take care of yourself, before the "dogs stops fooling you". The Dogwalker is sensitive movie about a young women with an unknown future and an an old one with an unknown past, helping each other to defend their right to live. Excellent acting and an amazing script settle this film, crowded by weird dog-people, one a layer above entertainment. It's an experience.
The Curiosity of Chance (2006)
Well done indy-entertainment
The story is about the obviously homosexual but even-more smart, charming and eloquent youngster Chance Maquise crossing the ocean to attend an International Highschool. As obligatory for a film set in a highschool scenario, he had to fight bullying, teachers and parents and his own weaknesses. But Chance Maquise way to discovering his own personality is therefore funny and more interesting than in a usual growing-up-movie.
Unfortunately no one beside a few freaks can understand or even handle this extroverted guy. But Chance - starting as a lonely wolf takes his chance and converts strangers into friends and convinces, at last, everybody that a certain touch of curiosity is a benefit for everybody.
Though some aspects make CoC appear more than the usual teenage-entertainment, it is definitely not. That it's situated in the 80's has no further intention than showing fancy clothes and place some acceptable jokes about accent differences. Any attempt to recapitulate the upcoming gay-movement in the 80's or at least a slightly different atmosphere poured into the superficial highschool-scenario could have changed this a lot. That said, for pure entertainment value you won't be disappointed with COC.
