The Season (2008)
First ever Amish horror, trust me I looked, and it's a good horror for a change.
Hello, It is nice to see more horror films that are not shot in LA. This pic has the deep Iowa feel and look that you can almost smell. An isolated whacked-out sect of Amish live on an old farm surrounded by cornfields and through a forest is a gas station and store they run. I've been to Amish areas in Indiana and they have a little store they run out of what is like an extra out building where they sell their goods: quilts, foods, and hand crafted wood works. As the Wheeler family sets up shop, they have a plan to abduct their customers that day, as for them it's "The Season". I don't want to give away too much, but I liked the script, the pacing of the film is fast, never gets slow, and the actors are great. I really like Hank (Aj Bowen) and Ester (Julianne Moore) they are both strong protagonists, you really feel empathy for them. As for the bad guys the family is creepy as the matriarch Catherine (Beverly McClusker) is the scary old woman who commands the farm. There are some very horrifying moments of terror in this story, keeps you on the edge of your seat. The Wheeler family has a new monster that has never been in any film I have ever seen. I don't want to spoil it you'll have to see for your self. But I give the Writer/Director an A++ on original concept, original monsters, and making a heart-pounding story that never slows down. Well done. I recommend this to every one as it's good, not just something a hard-core horror fan would enjoy, but any movie fan.
Baby Needs a New Pair of Shoes (1974)
Wow love the early 70's films
This is what a grind house fan likes most a movie of the era that is not the best but a treat for some. It has it's moments with classic and forgotten songs of the area, one is especially timely of that style's vibe. And Sweetman was a slick numbers runner in the urban mafia who had to help his boss fight the Italian mob who wanted to take over the urban mafia. Not the best film but fun for a watch. It turns out the writers and director didn't go on to do many films after this. Sometime the plot gets confusing and not many of the actors ever went on to do much else. Could be why they changed the title is that it didn't do to well when released. As a fan of African American cinema in the 70's it still is a must to see them all, and the best ones are the ones in the early seventies. I guess this was shot right around 1973. Thanks for reading.
