So very horrible. Don't bother.
15 March 2022
The casting was terrible. Ron wasn't bad if you were not looking at the screen. So much was changed or re-imagined in a way that was absolutely worse. I loved the cartoon and absolutely nothing in this is remotely watchable. Even the bigger names in it, well known people who are actually good are, in this, acting very badly. Nothing about this film works.

Barely watchable.
9 August 2020
This movie was surprisingly bad. Even by my standards. The narration was horrible, the accent was horrible, the villain was a joke. The people who made him scary could have gotten ride of him and taken over and been far more effective. The plot itself wasn't bad. The execution was the problem. On the whole, it was like they were trying to turn the character of Harley Quinn into a a poorly made knock off of Tank Girl. Instead of paying to watch this, I wish I had re-watched Suicide Squad instead.

Best out of this trilogy.
21 December 2019
I saw The Last Skywalker today. I had low expectations. I dislike some of the choices made for the last two movies and so didn't expect to like this one much. I ended up thinking it was the best of the last three movies. It was really good. I think most of what happened was appropriate and made sense based on what happened in the past two films (including the things I didn't like). And I realized all three trilogies basically end with a significant death. Despite any victories along the way, each trilogy, taken as a whole, is basically a Shakespearean tragedy.

Wonderful but oddly prophetic.
22 August 2019
I really was confused. I thought this was more current. I was thinking that Tim Curry has really recovered from his stroke. This is because the American political jokes and the Donald Trump reference made me think it was filmed within the last two years. So it was a shock to see the date of filming was 2012. Very shocked. Anyway. It was incredible. A whose who of famous UK comedic talent.

A surprisingly good disaster movie.
18 July 2019
To start with, I love disaster movies. I think Hollywood blockbusters have their place. I think some of the really bad ones that still entertain have their place. But I really love these well written, well acted, and more realistic films.

They take a premise that isn't likely but at the same time is not completely scientifically unsound as most Hollywood movies. They show a city that actually seems to have a plan for if they need to evacuate. People seem to be more reasonable about it. It isn't a case of people on one hand refusing to believe and everyone else in a complete and utter state of panic. It looks like someone really researched what a city like that might need to do in order to evacuate a significant portion. It shows real people dealing with their lives and suddenly having this added issue added to the issues they already have. Just enough drama to keep the story moving but this movie is really a combination of being plot and character driven rather than driven by special effects. It is low budget but despite that, I think the effect are surprising good for what they were trying to depict.

This movie is really worth watching and deserves a higher IMDB score than people have given it.

I don't blame the actors, I blame the writers.
20 April 2019
I always thought part of the reason the 2013 Lone Ranger movie got bad reviews was largely influenced by the fact that Depp was playing Tonto instead of a Native American actor. I myself wasn't as upset by that as I was confused why they made Tonto look like a Crow Indian Shaman instead of a Comanche Indian. I just watched it. It is a bad movie. Tonto is a bit of an idiot. I don't think a Native American would have wanted to play the part if they had read the script. And the Lone Ranger was a stumbling fool. The basic plot could have been a great movie if they hadn't tried to be so goofy with it. The actors actually did a fantastic job with the script they were given. I don't blame the actors. I blame the writers.

How do the animals survive?
13 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Mildly entertaining but predictable. Characters are fairly flat and not terribly likable. But if an island cycles between periods of being above water and submerged, how do the animals come back? Plants I understand, but not those types of animals. Also, the logic behind that mechanism doesn't work. Not at all.

Better than I expected.
3 June 2018
There were lots of complaints about this film when I checked reviews before I watched it. But I watched it anyway, since the overall plot is one I would normally like. It was better, on all fronts, than most of the complaints I read. I've seen worse acting, worse writing, and worse effects in movies that got better reviews. This is actually a relatively entertaining movie to watch on a weekend morning when you are looking for something to put on while working on projects. The pacing is good enough to keep you mentally engaged. While nothing is very original or at a level that would win any awards, the acting and writing is good enough to keep you entertained while your hands are busy with other tasks. I nearly wanted to give it a seven just to try to counter some of the lower scores that I think it didn't deserve. But I resisted and gave it a 6. It really isn't a 7 but I feel it is much better than a 5.

Rob Lowe ruined this show.
27 September 2017
The first season of this show was so amazing. I really loved it. It was a great ensemble show. But then they got rid of two actors in order to bring in Rob Lowe. And the show because all about Rob Lowe and his character saving the day. They screwed with a great show to turn it into a vehicle to stroke Rob Lowe's ego. I tried to watch it for a while but had to stop. What they did to the show was just to depressing to go on.

Watchable film, bones of a better film.
13 May 2017
This movies is not as bad as people are saying. It isn't a good movie. But it is watchable. It has an interesting, if basic, plot. The acting is actually pretty good for what they were given. Slightly shaky camera work but better than something like Blair Witch which made me so ill to watch that I gave up early on. But in this case, the idea is that the camera is on the helmet and should move with the person. So it makes sense. The frustration with this film is that it is so easy to see that it could be made into a film that is much better. The real problem seems to be the dialogue. Improve that, and the 'zombie' acting, then movie would really step up. Even so, like I said, a bad movie but a very watchable movie.

Unwatchable
3 October 2016
I had hopes for this film at the start. Film quality looked good. Made me think of Korean films and I like Korean films. But as it progressed, the lighting seemed off, too bright or too dark. There was something about the cinematography that seemed off. It seemed like it had to many 'hard edges'. I'm not sure how to explain that. It was a visual quality but it was a feeling instead of something you could point to visually. The beginning just wasn't making enough sense. Some of the dialogue felt awkward. I got 15 minutes into the film and decided that I just couldn't watch it. It was a weekend of watching bad horror films and that was the only one out of seven I couldn't watch. Which was odd since most of them had a terrible film quality and this one was sharp and clear. I would not recommend it. I would recommend Deadfall Trail before this. And that was tedious but I finished it. So my bar was set pretty low already.

The Flying Dutchman (2001 TV Movie)

Watchable but poorly done.
3 October 2016
I watched it all the way through, so I gave it an extra star (half star for sites that use 5 stars). Eric Roberts offered a great performance since he spent nearly the entire movie not talking at all. He did a good job with facial expression and body language. The only really good performance in the entire film.

Otherwise, you know it is going to be a bad movie when the supporting actress gives a better performance than the lead actress. The concept was typical. Nothing to write home about. The attempts to mislead the viewers into thinking the law enforcement was the murderer were heavy handed and clumsy.

Not a good film but I could at least watch it to the end. If planning an evening of bad horror movies, it works.

A coming of age story
16 October 2015
This movie, while not the greatest, is not as bad as people say. If you are looking for an adult action thriller, it fails utterly. But watching it from a literary perspective, it is a boy's coming of age story. The type of events, the pacing, the way the flashback information is all handled supports this. As such, it does well. If it was a book, it would be a young adult book and not a thriller novel. I would have given it a higher score but it was probably the worst performance of Will Smith's career. He cannot do stoic. He comes off as wooden. If this was the only movie I ever saw with Will Smith, I would have thought he couldn't act.

Utter Failure
16 October 2015
The idea was an good one. The execution was horrible. The women were totally unbelievable. The blonds equated teaching ESL as saving the world. This might have worked if they were playing ditsy blonds but they seemed to be playing slutty blonds. And it wasn't even the clothing giving this impression. It was the attitude and body language. The dialogue was poorly written and the acting was terrible. The brunette, the 'smart' one, seemed to be the ditsy one. Their interactions with the locals were painful to watch because they were so patronizing. Then they hit the bars and the acting and dialogue get even worse. I actually stopped watching before the movie got gory. It was just so bad that I couldn't continue watching.

Dark Secrets (2013– )

Don't be fooled.
16 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
My low rating on this is probably due to the fact I started watching it on Netflix where it is listed as Investigative T.V. and in with documentaries. While well crafted I suspected it was a huge fake out in episode one. By Episode two I knew it was. Vietnam Vets do not look younger than me. And the under developed brain of an absorbed twin is not going to take a person over. It was like the writer of that episode watched too much Venture Brothers. I could accept this show as fiction and find it amusing and entertaining, but there are no disclaimers that it is fiction and I think that is lying and cheating its audience. Unless the point is to prove that the average person is more gullible than we normally thing the masses already are. Or maybe I should just be happy that my suspicions starting with episode one prove I'm smarter than the masses.

The Tall Man (2012)
3/10
A Very Irresponsible Movie
2 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Lisa Renee Irwin went missing almost two years ago after her mom put her to bed and then had a few drinks. She would be almost three now. Half a year later, someone attempts to use a debit card stolen that same night on a website for buying false birth certificates. FBI thinks the baby is still alive.

So do I. Kidnapping babies to sell for illegal adoptions has been around for a long time. It is not as common as it once was. Now days, you are more likely to hear about people who kidnapped babies to raise as their own.

Still, after watching The Tall Man or The Tallman on Saturday, I can't help but wonder. The thriller was well acted and I've seen worse acting and writing hit the big screen while this went straight to DVD, as far as I know. I never heard of it until it came up on my Netflix feed. I've revealing the ultimate plot twist when I tell you that it ends up being about a woman who helps kidnap abused children and gets them to safety. It might not have been so objectionable except it wasn't just abused children. It was children of poor family's or single parents struggling to get by as well. It equated losing your job because the business closed to child abuse, as if you can control something like that.

Now think about it. There were a couple sittings of a man with a baby that night. Once I think was caught on video but maybe I'm thinking about a different case. Someone probably watched the family to get the pattern of behaviors down to know the best opportunity to take the baby. Imagine someone seeing a family where dad works the night shift and mom has a couple of drinks alone, after the kids are put to bed. Imagine the person thinking it was the perfect baby to take because the parents didn't have an ideal, 8 - 9 lifestyle, and a June Cleaver mom. In fact, the person probably thought he or she was doing the baby a favor.

The movie came out after the kidnapping. But it glorified kidnapping children to save them. Even if the only thing they were saving the child from was poverty or less than perfect families rather than any real physical or emotional abuse. The reason it is an irresponsible movie is because this kind of kidnapping is still going on and should NOT be glorified.

Originally, I just wanted to look up any latest developments on the Lisa Irwin case. (I couldn't find any) and complain about how the case just seemed to stop. I didn't mean to turn it into a longer rant about the movie I watched a couple days ago.

Messy, Full of Misdirection and Unanswered Questions, Tedious,
10 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I probably shouldn't mention it until the end, but this movie is a HUGE fail in my book. The think had so many plot screw ups I lost count.

My friend liked it because if you were one of the main characters, you might never know all the answers and all the information. So it is more realistic.

I don't care for realism in my movies. I want the movie to follow the physics and rules of the world it establishes. But I want things tidied up. I want answers, I guess.

If you have read 1984, this movie is like that. Deadly boring bits interspersed with really interesting bits. Aside from that, here is what I didn't like about it. Sorry for the spoilers.

Luke and Claire 1. If you own a small hotel and it is going out of business for good, would you really take a trip to Barbados and leave only two staff members to man it 24 hours for the final weekend? It seemed all wrong to me, but I've worked at some jobs that were closing up when in college. Made for great summer jobs when you have to go back to college again in fall. This made no sense.

2. The guy (Luke) working there, who was supposed to be all about the ghost hunting, managed a page about the haunting of the inn, and supposedly saw the ghost of the lady (Madeline O'Malley) who died there (after her fiancé stood her up) was a total fake. I saw that right off the bat. He seemed to have no real interest or enthusiasm for ghost hunting. I suspected he was lying about seeing the ghost and it turned out I was right. (I was certain that when I was watching it that the movie said she was stood up but other sites say she was hanged on her wedding night.) 3. The older actress (Lee) turned New Age healing guru says there are three ghosts there and not Madeline O'Malley. She said they tried to warn her (Madeline). Who they are is never mentioned. And the female lead (Claire) only ever sees Madeline.

4. This brings up the issue, is it really just Claire's over active imagination. But what about the piano music she heard and the keys she saw depress themselves? Still her imagination. Luke went to repeat her EVP experiment and he heard the piano too. But he was drunk then. Maybe it was his imagination too.

5. An old man shows up and wants a particular room on the floor that was already stripped and mostly emptied. Only the beds remain. Claire decided they might as well let him stay there. It is the last night after all. She takes up sheets and he mentions that he spent his honeymoon there. The implication was that perhaps he was Madeline's fiancé. But he wasn't quiet old enough based on the legend. By the photo of Madeline, he would have had to have been well over 80. What was going to happen to happen to him was terribly obvious. Old man, small bag, willing to take the honeymoon suite even those all that is left in it is a bed, all alone. Of course he was going to kill himself. How much more obvious could they make it.

6. Claire is so freaked out, she goes to leave but can't find Lee. She looks for the older woman in the basement. She totally freaks out, thinking the ghost of the old man is coming after her. She races to the storm cellar doors in the alley and locks herself in that room, screaming for her coworker. The day before she had chained and locked the alley access to the basement. She can't get out.

7. Through the entire movie, Claire was puffing on an inhaler. Lee kept telling her the basement was a very bad place for her and she needed to get out of there. Well, Claire thinks it the ghost banging on the door and after her. It is really her coworker answering her cries for help and trying to get her to unlock the door. She has an asthma attack and her inhaler is on the other side of the door, having been dropped in her mad flight to get to the room and secure herself inside.

I still want to know why there was ever mention of three ghosts who were not Madeline being in the hotel. Why they were trying to warn Madeline? Why was she and accident? What was the accident, because the girl kept seeing a Madeline who had been hanged in her wedding dress and yet had blood all on her face. Why did she keep seeing Madeline when the spiritualist said Madeline was not one of the ghosts there? That reinforces my idea that all of this was Madeline's over active imagination and her many times of spooking herself and over reacting.

All in all, I hated it.

Bad Teacher (2011)

Such a disappointment.
29 October 2011
I thought this film looked very funny. These days, I have a pretty low expectation for this type of film. Still, my expectations were too high. The teacher whose name was Lynn would never survive in middle school. She might in a kindergarten. Diaz's character was too over the top horrible. There was NOTHING likable about her. As a result, I could not connect at all. The gym teacher, Russell, was the only likable character in the entire film. He did not have enough camera time. I eventually had to just give up on the film altogether and went to bed. No, went to my computer first, to post in several various venues about how disappointing this movie was.

A sweet comedy about family and life.
11 September 2011
This movie IS a comedy. There are many types of comedy and you don't have to laugh out loud the whole time for it to be a comedy. The movie is funny, charming, and very cute.

It really isn't about Ned's philosophy of expecting the best of others and seeing the good in them because even thought some people don't, and it can hurt you, more people do and everyone is better for it. It's about family dynamics, life choices, and learning to accept your own actions.

By accepting responsibility for your own actions you are able to free yourself to be more accepting of other people despite their flaws. Because we all have flaws.

Ned is less of a protagonist and more of a catalyst for change in his sisters' lives. The only reason I don't give this movie a 9 star rating is because the ending is a little on the weak side. They could have stopped the movie a few minutes earlier and it would have been stronger.

If only the ending....
4 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
If only the ending were different. The first 7 minutes were not great. But once you get the 9 into the closed room and they have to put the puzzle together and solve the mystery, I loved it - until the end.

Some people say it was a Saw copycat. I have not seen the Saw movies. I do not like slasher films and that seems to be all the saw movies are. This was far more cerebral.

I didn't think the acting was as bad as some people said. Perhaps because they hated the movie they were more critical of the actors than perhaps the actors deserved.

It was the ending that ruined the movie for me. The puzzle was solved. All the pieces finally fall together. For people who love mystery novels this is the greatest moment. But then the person who is the 'most' guilty in the whole mess takes out the other survivors to save her career. That just made me really mad. The person who carries the most blame escapes the room and escapes justice.

Makes me want to scream in frustration.

Dreamcatcher (2003)

A good start that went really bad really fast.
24 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't realize this was based on a Stephen King novel when I started watching it. I suppose that if I had, I wouldn't have been so disappointed with the direction it eventually went.

I got very interested in the first half hour or so of the movie. The abilities of the friends, the flash backs where they rescue a handicapped kid from much older bullies. I expected the film to go in a completely different direction. Instead it turns into a rather boring alien/monster movie that really has nothing new to offer the genre.

Since they start seeing visions (or at least one of them does) of the young boy they rescued before they even go back for their annual hunting trip, I don't understand the point of them. Because they had yet to come into the area of influence of the alien.

I also never did figure out the connection to dreamcatchers and why it was titled that. Of course, I was so disappointed in the movie that I gave up on it and never finished it.

If you know what you are going to get before you sit down to it, the movie may not be so bad. But if you start watching it with no expectations, then you get presented with one kind of movie that later completely changes on you, it is a major let down. I want that hour of my life back.

A somewhat different type of hit man movie....
23 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was not what I expected from Wesley Snipes. I started to get disappointed. But the more I watched, the more I realize that it was mis-marketed.

It is not an action movie so much as a movie that has some action in it. The dialogue is sparse which means the actors really have to work that much harder. Directing wasn't that bad but the shoot-out with strobe lights was a poor idea. The longer I watched, the more I wondered if this is actually a British film rather than an American. The tone was much different.

This movie deserves a better rating than people have given it. Try watching it without thinking of it as an action movie and you may like it more. It is really an excellent film.

Better than Event Horizon
24 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I liked Event Horizon. I like this film better because it made a little more sense in the end.

I watched it in three segments. Mostly because it was too dark for most of the film and more gore than I care for. The concept was good, the acting good, the writing good. The only flaw was in the execution.

I struggled on through the gore to find out how everything would tie together in the end. I liked the explanation of where the 'monsters' came from but found myself curious as to why genetic treatments (that were supposed to help them adapt to the new planet) caused those that were woken up early to adapt to the ship environment in those particular ways. I love the way it ends with all the undisturbed sleeper pods bouncing up out of the ocean and people sitting up and enough people surviving to still have a large, diverse, genetic population to start a viable colony.

So while I do wish so much of it wasn't so dark and dirty and gory, I still think it is a film worth watching.

Better than I expected
24 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
While this movie isn't the greatest example of it's genre, it is a very fun film.

I started out with fairly low expectations. But the story concept sounded good so I thought I would give it a try. A few actors were too stiff, and one was too much of a ham, the rest of the cast gave fairly to very solid performances.

I know some viewers liked the idea of teachers finally getting back at the bad students. That was only a minor concern to me. What I liked was the military assault specialist that discovers that he has a taste for teaching. I also like the idea that everyone is trying to figure out whom he is working for when he is working for himself. I didn't like the way most of his team dies in the final engagement.

On the whole, it was much better than I was expecting and I would recommend it for people who want an interesting action movie with some funny moments but don't want to have to think much while watching it.

Good Potential that never arrived
14 December 2010
Buried in this film is a good movie. It's biggest problem is that they took too long to capture viewer interest. 25 minutes into the film I had no clue of motivations, no real connection to the lead characters, and no real interest in what happens to to anyone.

Finally, at 35 minutes in, it FINALLY started to get interesting. Since I was watching this on the computer and chatting with a friend on my other monitor about movies, I hadn't turned it off yet. Had I not been doing that, I would have stopped the movie and sent it back and missed the good parts.

A character driven film should NOT take that long to create a connection between the viewer and the protagonist and antagonist. The action sequences, as they try to get the money to the train on time, don't seem to fit into the film very well.

Once I got interested in the film, I kept hoping it would get really good, it always seemed to be on the verge of doing so, but never reached that point. I can't give it a score better than a Five.
