Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food (2023)
Truth mixed with a plea for more Government Regulation
What starts as an interesting history of modern day food illnesses, ultimately ends up turning into a commercial for more government regulation from a plaintiff attorney and multiple government representatives and agencies.
Food born illnesses are real, but the film chooses not to do the math and put the cases in perspective.
Furthermore, the film did nothing to educate people on safe food preparation tips to prevent this from a happening in their kitchens. Missed opportunity or the filmmakers felt it would be better to scare everyone.
Beef, peanuts, leafy greens, and chicken all exposed. Shocked that fish/seafood escaped unscathed (except for a late montage oyster reference).
It just feels like part of a bigger story - mainly the plaintiff's case against the industry.
Rifkin's Festival (2020)
A Nice Escape
Fans of Woody Allen will love the Spanish escape. Beautiful scenery. The music and story are simple and loverly. Gina Gershon is great casting, though Wallace Shawn is a bid old of Mort. The Woody Allen delivery punchline is missed, as is some of the passion and emotion from Mort (is that what we get as we age?).
The Christoph Waltz cameo is awesome. Would love to see him featured in a more conventional Allen film, if there is one to come.
Open Range (2003)
Duvall Shines - In line with Unforgiven, Pale Rider
While I'll never confess to being a fan of Kevin Costner the actor, there is no denying that he is an accomplished, award winning director and perhaps the best modern western director. He does not disappoint with 'Open Range'. His sweeping landscapes and exposure of the elements put the audience in the middle of the wind swept fields and soaking rains.
As an actor, Costner comfortably stays out of the camera's way when Duvall is in the scene. It's good to know that directorial common sense kicks in to preserve the authenticity of the film. Other notable performances come from Annette Benning (Costner's love interest) and Michael Jeter (the livery stable man with the sweet side). Jeter recently passed away and will sorely be missed.
See this on the big screen to enjoy it for what it is - a wonderfully simple reflection of western life on the open range.
