American Rust (2021)
Great show tackling important issues
I enjoyed the first season when it was airing week to week on Showtime. At that time, it was bringing awareness to pharmaceuticals being pushed into small communities, running away from one's past, mixed race family among other important topics.
Since it was renewed, the 2nd season leans into themes of embracing ones own sexuality, the psychological toll of being incarcerated and the PTSD that can come from that, fracking and the impact on the environment, and how small towns may embrace potential hazardous waste endeavors as it props up the local economy. Mix in a bit of crooked cops who think they are justified in the ways they are trying to "clean up" the street and you have a compelling and thoughtful show. I dig it. A-/B+

Solid Mystery with Good Characters
I really enjoyed the first season. The characters are deep, flawed, hopeful and overall well rounded. The mystery aspect of the town, how people arrived, and what the monsters are is well done.
I hope it gets subsequent seasons to wrap up the mysteries and storylines.
Recommended if you like complex mysteries and solid character development.
Snowpiercer (2020)
An interesting spin on the original idea
I was a casual fan of the movie, didn't think it was anything amazing but enjoyed the concept, and so seeing a more fleshed out idea of that premise is enjoyable and interesting. Seeing how a world could survive on an oversized train 1000 cars long is an interesting topic: how people get along, how the underbelly of drugs and sex exist in a confined space, how food is grown, etc is interesting to me, and therefore I enjoy the show. It's an alternate reality worth exploring, and therefore recommended to the people that enjoy that kind of thing.
Briarpatch (2019)
It's good, I don't understand the hate
I've binged 8 episodes in 2 days, I very much enjoy this show. Rosario Dawson does a great job, very convincing as a cold but rootable lady out to find the truth about her sisters murder. Lots of likable characters, good plot, aesthetically pleasing, well paced show. Like the heading says, not sure why this is getting a low score on reviews.
Give it a chance, its worth it!
Lodge 49 (2018)
An overlooked GEM of a show
I know no show like this. I am so happy that AMC took a gamble on this, and hopefully it isn't a gamble. I have never seen a show like this; it could quite possibly be the most unique show I have ever seen. Quirky, mysterious, buddy comedy, slightly Big Lebowski-esque, happy wanderer, fish out of water. Whatever we want to call it, there's nothing out there quite like this. Thank you AMC for giving this a shot and I truly hope it continues. Love it, watch it, appreciate it! Cheers!
Less Than Zero (1987)
Read the book instead!!!!!
Less than Zero is an adaptation on bret Easton Ellis' novel. Now, i read the book first, and LOVED it. It was great. I rented the movie, and wow, it didnt follow the book at all. The book is great, the movie is just okay. I would recommend reading the book. it's 2 hundred pages, and a quick read.
I read "Less than Zero" and "Rules of Attraction", both Easton Ellis novels. They are both very good, but bret has said that out of books he's written that got turned into movies (Less than Zero, American Psycho, and Rules of Attraction), the only one he likes and thinks was a good adaptation is Rules of Attraction. I agree, but the books are always better.
Dark Blue (2002)
Kurt Russel is excellent in this, but the rest blows!
Here in Sacramento, the dude in the paper that gives the reviews is a total idiot. For example, he gave "Gangs of New York", 2 stars. Now that was a great film. So, now he gives "Dark Blue", 4 stars. I hyped this movie, yes, but, honestly, it wasnt good at all. Kurt Russel and Ving Rhames (sp?) both did excellent, except for the fact that they have a total of 6 min. on screen-time together, but, as for the rest of the acting, it was god-aweful. Kurt's partner is by far one of the worst actors I've ever seen, i dont even know how he landed this. And then, there's his girlfriend, who resembles Vennessa Williams (sp?) from the movie "Eraser", and she was a horrible actress as well. But honestly, a film with this much potential, it suprises me how these horrible actors landed the job. Next for me to complain about, the directing was not good at all. Maybe it's just me looking at it from a stand point of a great piece of film, but honestly, it was bad too. There were these quick stupid cuts that had no point, and they were just annoying. My complaints dont go on much further. Basically, the story was excellent, the lead acting was good, but everything else was sh**. I give this 5.5 out of 10.
Narc (2002)
Narc is awesome!!!!!!!
Narc is great. It's basically about a cop that ends up dead, and his partner (Ray Liota) finds him. It's been 60 days and the case is still up in the air. Jason Patrick is called in to help try to find out what happens. Basically, this movie is great. I cant complain at all about it. The direction was great, editing was awesome, the acting was superb; so bacially, i cant complain. I gave it a 10. Simply, see it, it's worth the money.
