First...I am a dyed-in-the-wool liberal from the 60's and all that stands for; including being anti war; especially anti Iraq and GW. That said, this is one of the most self-consciously self-indulgent films I've seen in a long long time. What a disappointment! As a former TV correspondent, I thought Meryl Streep's interview with Cruise was laughable. (what was all her giggling about? And what television reporter does an interview without a camera!!!!) The college kid was a total smart-ass...Redford tried too hard not to come off wooden..and I didn't like Cruise's performance at all! The directing was contrived and confusing...and the war scenes were completely cheesy! The ending?...where the 2 soldiers forced themselves to stand up made me groan it was so corny...and then there was that questionable ending with the kid (about whom i didn't care one bit). I couldn't wait for it to be over. All that said, several audience members applauded!! Go figure. It made me think, alright...about why they couldn't make a smart anti war film that wasn't so talky, and preachy and so full of propaganda!
