Great Actors They're Not
14 March 2024
This is a run of the mill ghost story marred by generally poor performances.

All of the familiar, formulaic elements are here. We begin with a happy, oh so happy family wearing pasted-on smiles because, hey-we have to see that they're happy, right? The idiotic smiles remain firmly in place as our little family moves into their newly rented home. But soon the smiles are wiped off their faces as they experience the first of the ever-escalating ghostly events. And does Daddy offer moral support to his wife and daughters as the supernatural mayhem ramps up? Well of course not because, true to form, he experiences none of these events himself, and our formula demands that he remain obstinately skeptical.

All of this is annoying enough, but the real fly in the ointment is the actress who plays the mother. Outfitted throughout in a dime store wig that no self-respecting woman would ever wear in public, mama's performance runs the emotional gamut from A to B. She delivers her lines woodenly, all the while adopting cringe-worthy facial expressions calculated, no doubt, to show either her intense internal turmoil or an attack of gastritis. The scene in which she attempts to cleanse her home by reciting a prayer in a mystifyingly stilted and completely unnatural manner is certainly memorable, if not believable.

I realize that this is not a big budget production, but surely the producer could find a few veterans of the local community theater who could pull off these portrayals far more convincingly. And for heaven's sake, hire a director who is skilled at working with actors beyond simply telling them where to stand for any given shot. In this instance, the incompetence is palpable and ruins an episode that should have offered a modicum of viewing pleasure.

Nick Adams Is Poorly Served
24 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Seeing Nick Adams in what I assume is yellow face, complete with obvious "ethnic" eye makeup and a bad wig, is a bit more than fans of the doomed actor will wish to see.

A fine actor in his own right, Adams was cast, in all likelihood, more for his close friendship with series star Robert Conrad than for his acting chops. This is not to say Adams wasn't up to the task of portraying a foppish south seas prince: he was. Still, it would have been preferable to see an ethnically-correct actor in the role.

As for the plot, this episode closely follows a standard TWWW boiler plate with booby-trapped rooms, dastardly villains, a gorgeous femme fatale and, of course, a shirtless Robert Conrad. All in all, we've seen it all before.

Hereditary (2018)
Awful. Just Awful.
20 December 2021
This sorry excuse for a film was doomed by its meandering, pointless script and sluggish direction. It is an embarrassment to all who participated and should be avoided at all costs. Pathetic.

A Haunting: Haunted Past (2019)

Well ...
24 January 2020
Shows of this sort, employing "dramatic recreations," usually feature uneven performances, but for sheer amateurishness, the "actors" in this episode take the cake. Particularly lamentable is the woman who portrays Deborah by delivering her lines in a tone of voice that closely resembles the sound of nails on a chalkboard. Every. Single. Line. The script isn't bad, but surely this program's producers could have found actors who are able to surpass the average level of talent seen in a typical middle school play.

Simply Awful
23 October 2019
This confused mish-mash of a story never should have seen the light of day.The boys run around a farm looking for ... what? There is zero dramatic tension, even with the sub-plot of protecting farm animals from-what, exactly? A suitable follow up might be entitled "The Mystery of Watching Paint Dry."

Ghost Stories (I) (1997–1998)

Embarrassing. Amateurish. Disappointing.
7 May 2012
I love a good ghost story as much as the next guy. That's the problem with this little-known series: its ghost stories are far from good. Perhaps this is the reason Hulu is offering episodes at the time of this review: no doubt Hulu obtained it very cheaply indeed.

Without exception, the series scripts are hackneyed, the acting rarely rises above the typical junior high school play, and the production values--well, let's just say no one went broke putting this turkey together.

Not all television productions deserve to be resurrected after a failed first run: this is one of them. Watch if you must, but don't say you haven't been warned!

Charmed: Forever Charmed (2006)
Season 8, Episode 22
10/10
Couldn't Have Been More Perfect!
5 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Die-hard fans of this marvelous series will find this, the last-ever episode, both exciting and gratifying.

Bringing together several beloved characters from past episodes including Grams, Patty, Victor, and the adult Wyatt and Chris, evil is defeated, love is affirmed, and all loose ends are tied neatly.

A special treat is the tender look into the futures of the three sisters and their respective families.

I'll offer no more details or possible spoilers, since viewers should be able to enjoy Charmed's final installment as events unfold, but when about to watch the episode, take this advice: sit back armed with favorite snack and beverage, turn off the telephone, and bask in the pleasure of what may be the finest episode in the show's long history.

Tobe Hooper: Hack
8 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I've never met Tobe Hooper and I have nothing against the man personally. That said, this truly awful film leaves no doubt as to Hooper's utter lack of directorial talent.

The plot is moronic, the scripting even more so. And true to form, Hooper blunders through the mess, making it all the worse.

STRUCTURE, people, STRUCTURE! Did Hooper and the screenwriter never study the basics of writing for film? The ending is completely out of whack, as if it were thrown in at the last minute at the producer's demand. If this pile of steaming film-making was supposed to be a tragedy (which it is--literally), the screenwriter is obligated to follow one of the simple rules of the form: Character with Tragic Flaw. That character would be Jonathan, yet there's no tragic flaw to be found. The ending is unwarranted--and Hooper should have known. Sheesh!

Don't watch this film on TV. Don't rent it. And for heaven's sake, NEVER buy it! Better you should throw your money down the sewer, which is exactly where "Mortuary" belongs.
