La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano (1998)
Not what I expected
When I read the plot of this movie, I thought it would be something I would like. I thought the acting was cheesy and the characters were very one-dimensional. I didn't really care about the people at all. Tim Roth is a great actor and I think his talent was completely wasted on this. I was also disappointed in Giuseppe Tornatore. Cinema Paradiso is one of my favorite Italian movies. Another minor thing that bothered me was that it was obvious that they weren't playing their instruments (you'll have to forgive me on this one, it's just one of those things that I notice and that bugs me because I studied music when I was a kid). *Spoiler* I was happy when they blew up the ship at the end. I thought, Good riddance. I just wanted it to end. And thankfully, it did.
Uniko: Mahô no shima e (1983)
I love this movie
My mom gave me a lot of the video tapes she recorded for me when I was very little. I still have this rare gem (on the same tape as Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer). I also have the first Unico movie. Seeing it as an adult gives you a different perspective of it. I loved it as a child and now I watch it with my kids. If you are reading this I hope you can find it. It is a very dark movie. I also think it had a great storyline. Kuruku is positively evil. He really scared me when I was little. I also love Mel (where can I get some of those earphones?) and the little sphinx thing. If you can find this movie and you like animation, treat yourself.
Jack and the Beanstalk (1974)
Wow, I can't believe that other people remember this
I am fortunate in that I have had this movie on tape ever since I was a little girl. I still watch it with my kids when they watch it. I hadn't seen it in at least ten years when they found it and watched it. It is interesting to see it as an adult. Some movies and books that were parts of our childhood are a lot darker than we thought they were when we were little (another example of this is "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"). I would definitely recommend watching it by yourself and then deciding if your kids are old enough to watch it.
Dungeons & Dragons (2000)
Is it the worst movie ever?
Quite possibly. I haven't seen it since it was in the theater, but it still bothers me to this day. I normally like anything in the fantasy genre. I never played the game when I was a kid, but I've read some of the books that TSR has put out. I couldn't believe how bad the movie was. From the way she was "acting", you'd think that Thora Birch had never even seen the script before filming and was reading cue cards. I like Jeremy Irons, but he was overacting. I have never seen or read of any dwarf as tall as the one in this movie. I think the only character that was realistic was the elf. The Wayans brother that was in this reminded me of the old 30s movies that portrayed blacks as inferior. I might have enjoyed this movie when I was 10, but now it is absolutely painful to watch. Use your money to have your car washed or something, this movie is terrible.
