Hidalgo (2004)
an excellent and underrated movie
i bought this DVD at a car boot sale , and it lay around the house for ages . i was in two minds whether to watch it or not, as the movie had been totally savaged by the critics in the UK. i have to say though i am glad i watched this movie , as i thoroughly enjoyed it. this movie has everything going for it, drama, excitement, romance, tension and humour. the performances are great and the movie ie well made. it put me in mind of the perfect Sunday afternoon movie. the critics all seemed to think that, the fact the movie was claiming to be a true story when it actually was mostly fiction was a huge bad point. sorry but i disagree, when a movie is this good and this enjoyable, it doesn't really matter whether the producers took liberties with the truth or not, it's the end result that counts, and the end result is a thoroughly enjoyable boys own adventure type story that i would recommend to anyone.
Dirkie (1969)
very memorable movie
i remember seeing this movie as a young boy more than 30 years ago, it was part of a double bill , i don't recall what the main feature was and i think that is testament to just how memorable this movie is. the images of the young boy believing he has eaten his dog , and his father dropping thousands of leaflets to try and help him, have stayed in my mind for all this time.there was also a scene where he crossed from one desert to another , made visible by the different coloured sand, also the ostrich egg scene which i vividly remember.
i really can't believe that so many people were moved by this film in the same way that i was . it amazes me that this film has never shown up on British television , or been released on video/DVD.
I Heart Huckabees (2004)
tedious, pretentious and boring !
i rented this movie at the weekend after seeing some pretty decent reviews, and i have to say that this movie must be the most overrated, pretentious pile of s**t i have ever had the misfortune to watch. my son lost interest after approximately 35 minutes , and i gave up after roughly another half hour. described as a comedy , it is not even vaguely funny , pretentious , boring , rubbish it certainly is . if you want to be entertained by a movie , please do yourself a favour and give this one a miss. if you want to be bored rigid , asking yourself existential questions for a couple of hours , then by all means rent this movie. otherwise , avoid it like the plague. truly awful !!
Rockin' with Seka or... Seka's Cruise (1980)
a classic of the adult movie genre
the gorgeous seka, one of the most beautiful of all adult movie stars, plays an air hostess taking a young inexperienced trainee under her wing. as usual this leads to umpteen excuses for couples ,threesomes and more to get it on in a variety of scenarios. includes an appearance by adult movie legend john holmes. a wholly enjoyable movie, one of the best in the genre.
Black Cadillac (2003)
surprisingly good thriller
i got this movie from our local video store mainly because there was nothing else i fancied.what i got was a surprisingly good thriller, albeit a low budget one. this movie was well directed and thus manages to sustain the tension for most of the movie, creating a real sense of menace and foreboding around the black caddy in question. the acting too was well delivered by all concerned. an all round competent thriller that i would rate 7 1/2 out of 10.
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973)
wow
i can't believe that so many people remember this movie. i saw this when i was around 7 or 8 years old and it quite literally scared the living hell out of me. the story revolves around a young couple who move into a creepy old house. the young wife starts to realise that there is something not quite right about the house , and that there may be someone, or something living there that means her harm. you can feel totally sympathetic towards sally ,as you slowly realise that no-one believes her and she is totally at the mercy of the creatures lurking within the dark recesses of her house.
the scene that is so vivid in my memory, and still sends shivers up my spine, is the one where the little creatures are climbing the stairs. why is this movie never shown on British TV ?
i understand that Guillermo del toro is to remake this movie, i hope he makes a good job of it , but to be honest i cant really see anyone sitting at their computers in 30 years time saying how it had such a profound affect on them.
