Sugar (2024– )

Well done, but.....
24 April 2024
I watched the first 3 episodes but don't intend to watch any more. The show is very well done but the main character, John Sugar (played by Farrell, one of my favorite actors) is completely unbelievable.

After watching the first episode I actually looked into the series to see if it was considered to be classified as science fiction or supernatural in terms of the genre. I thought for a minute that the character of Sugar might be some sort of divine angel sent to Earth to save people. Nope. Apparently he's a real human. A completely unbelievable real human.

It's a shame because I had high hopes for the series, what with being a fan of Farrel, but I'm just not able to suspend belief to the level needed to continue watching.

Meh....
16 September 2020
Interesting concept that ultimately fails to deliver. At no point was I spooked or creeped out. It was pretty dull up until the last 20 minutes when things began to get interesting......only to be capped off by an ending that made me say "really?" and shake my head.

Worth the Effort
17 August 2020
While it's a bit of overload on the inspirational stories, in the end it's worth the watch just to see who makes it and who doesn't. I have to say I was more surprised by the teams that DID finish as compared to those who failed.

Underrated
26 March 2020
Saw this title on a list of underappreciated films from 2019 and it looked interesting. How right they were. Can't believe this movie only has a 5.8 user score on IMDB. A bleak, brutal, and very well done take on the "bad man and his crew come to town". Starts slowly and predictably but gradually becomes more and more intense. Worth your viewing time.

Lightweight but Entertaining
4 November 2019
Not gonna win any awards but it was still (Stills?) enjoyable. The people complaining about The Doors and Joni Mitchell being omitted need to remember - this film is about the birth of the LA folk-rock scene in '65-'66. The Doors were of a different genre and Mitchell didn't arrive in Southern California until the late '60s. Again, this is about the "California Sound", not the spacey, acid-rock of the doors or the Greenwich Village folk scene.

A nice way to spend an hour and a half.

It's The Same Episode Over And Over
19 August 2018
I've watched the first 6 episodes and the story is still pretty much stuck at square one. The show is well-acted and looks fantastic, but the story is completely stuck in the mud. It's just the same characters doing the same things over and over again without advancing the story or getting any closer to unveiling the killer (or killers). I'm done with it. After the final episode I'll go online and read a recap.

A Bit Dull
26 May 2018
In the broader sense of the Star Wars universe, "Solo" does a good job of giving us Han's (and Chewie's too) backstory. However as a movie in and of itself it was underwhelming to say the least. It simply wasn't very compelling, most (but not all) of the attempts at humor fell flat, and social messages were laid on a bit thick and awkwardly. Also, this movie's obligatory new droid fell flat as well.

On the positive side, Ehrenreich and Glover were well-cast and did an excellent job of portraying the younger versions of their characters. Woody Harrelson was very good as well although I prefer lesser-known actors in such roles as it saves from the potential "Hey, that's Woody from 'Cheers' " type of distraction.

Not a bad movie but I could have waited for it to come out on TV or DVD.

Not THAT bad
5 September 2013
The Frankenstein Theory is far from a masterpiece but I didn't find it nearly as bad as some have made it out to be.

It IS a total copy of "Blair Witch Project" with just the location changed, but that being said it's a reasonable recreation. I was never on the edge of my seat but the movie accomplished an important goal - it kept me interested enough to make me watch until the end.

The Frankenstein Theory also does a decent job (albeit slowly) of ramping up the tension until it climaxes in the last 10 minutes or so of the film.

There's nothing original here but as basic entertainment it's really not that bad. 5 out of 10.

8.7?? Are You Kidding Me?
20 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Really?? 8.7? I don't know what everybody else watched but I saw "Rear Window" for the first time recently and came away completely disappointed. I like Hitchcock, Jimmy Stewart, and Grace Kelly so I'm certainly not predisposed to dislike any of their movies.

Exactly where was the mystery?? There were no twists, no turns, no shockers, and no surprises at all in this movie. The plot was so utterly simplistic that I thought for sure one of the other main characters was going to be involved and would be revealed in the last 10 minutes of the film. Nope. Nothing. I couldn't believe it when the movie ended. My reaction was "You've got to be kidding me!"

And this movie has repeatedly been called one of the greatest ever?? Give me a break. Go watch "Rope" or "Dial M for Murder" instead.

Mediocre
8 May 2012
This movie is rated as an 8.8 at the time of my writing this and I fully expect that to come down considerably now that all the fanboys (and girls) are finished pumping it up. The characters could spend 2 hrs napping and the fanboys would still give this movie a 9 or 10. It's like that with any movie franchise - those most predisposed to loving it are the first ones to see it and rave about it, as well as overlook the obvious faults.

Now that the rest of us are going to see it (and review it) that rating will reflect what the movie really is: A CGI fest that's really kind of mediocre. If it weren't for the very funny moments that punctuate the film, this movie would flat-out stink. It's riddled with cheesy clichés and seems more geared towards 10-13 yr-olds than to adults.

I really like "Iron Man", loved IM2, enjoyed "Thor", and was indifferent towards "Cpt. America". This movie was definitely the weakest.

Huge Disappointment
21 April 2012
The acting was first-rate. The adaptation was horrible. There are so many holes in the plot I felt as though I missed the first 15 minutes of the movie......you know, the part where we're supposed to see the birth of the story line and some character development. Anyone who wasn't already familiar with the book would be completely lost. It's like I was watching part 2 of a two-part miniseries without having seen part 1. It was beyond disjointed. Did Cirian Hinds even have any lines in the movie?? He was in scene after scene but I don't remember him saying anything.

In any case, I was hugely disappointed in this film. The BBC miniseries with Alec Guiness is vastly superior.

Too Long....Too Talkative
30 January 2012
I like most of Tarantno's movies so I don't write this review as a QT hater by any means. That being said, this movie is just too self-absorbed for its own good. Way too much dialog that just rambles on and on...seemingly without end in some places. It's a 2.5 hour movie that could have easily 2 hours if not a little less. Couldn't QT bring himself to cut anything from this movie?? It's filled with scenes that are pointless and add nothing to the plot, and many of the scenes that DO add to the movie are simply too long and glib for their own good. Sometimes I think Tarentino is addicted to the sound of his own dialog and as a result has his actors just prattle along without end. "Death Proof" had the same problem.

Overall it was a solid flick but it could have been far better.

Over-hyped & Overrated
10 January 2012
Where do I start......

How 'bout with the plot. Anybody here ever see "Dances With Wolves"?? If you answered "yes" (as I'm sure most of you did) then you must be aware that Avatar's plot was lifted....no, COPIED...almost entirely from "Dances". Wounded soldier goes to a far-flung outpost to make contact with "aliens" so-to-speak and ends up assimilating with them and ultimately siding with them blah blah blah.......I half expected to see a blue Kevin Costner running around yelling "Totanka! Totanka!" The SFX?? At no time during this movie did I think I WASN'T watching a cartoon. Visually beautiful but the avatars all looked very, very CGI. The movie didn't stink but overall is was a very big disappointment.

Solid But Not "Best Picture" Material
27 December 2011
"The French Connection" is probably the "worst" best picture winner I've ever seen, and I've seen most of them. That isn't to say it's a bad movie (it isn't) but it really pales in comparison to most other Oscar winners. The biggest problem is the plot. It's so basic and straightforward that it would seem more appropriate in an average made-for-TV movie. It's entirely predictable and mostly lacking in any sort of suspense. The acting is good but the characters aren't exactly believable, including Gene Hackman's Doyle. Everyone is so stereotyped - the cops, the thugs, the drug kingpins, all of them. I've always thought "The Seven-Ups" (a sequel of sorts to this movie) is a much better movie and more worth your time.

Fascinating
20 March 2005
As an armchair historian who's read dozens of book on Stalin and the Soviet Union under his control, I was fascinated by this movie. A great cast helps underscore the paranoia, backstabbing, and fear of the Stalinist system as seen through the eyes of a small-time player who's been thrust into a very dangerous circle.

Hulce is terrific as the simple, hard-working Soviet citizen who wants nothing more than to believe in the system that dominates his life, yet he knows it's a system riddled with traps and monsters. Hoskins is equally good as the real-life monster Beria - Stalin's chief of state security and main hatchet-man.

A highly underrated movie.
