Turning Red (2022)
I felt let down. Boy crazy tween movie.
Maybe I expected too much out of this movie.. and maybe there was a reason this got a straight to streaming release. I thought the red panda was cute, but other than that, I was let down. This lacked the depth I have come to expect from Pixar. Maybe it was just too much for tween girls with not enough for the rest of us. I felt the friends were over the top and annoying/cringey. Maybe they were the epitome of the type of boy crazy girls that annoyed me in Jr High ... That could be what destroyed this for me. Ok for tweens, not so much for me!
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Way better than the haters would have you believe
I see a lot of unwarranted hate for this show. 1s? Really, what kind of shows really deserve a 1?
I have watched a lot of Star Trek in my time. Next Generation holds a special spot for me... and I didn't really get into Enterprise. Discovery is very different in that it's focus is taken away from the captain's chair and dies focus on another character's story arc. I also like the nods to the older series. It is a fresh new take on the franchise. This is not your Daddy's Star Trek.
I think the show continues to break new ground by offering an openly gay couple, which I've seen silly complaints about.. they wanted to do the same thing in the 80s on star Trek, but the networks were too restricive... they can finally push more boundaries, which has always been the Star Trek way.
I really dig the way the show us coming together an am glad I ignored the haters to give it a shot!
What Men Want (2019)
Fun watch, why all the hate?
I thought this was a fun watch. The movie speaks toward what is like to be a woman in the workplace trying to get ahead with the good Ol' boys' club. Probably the same ol' good ol' boys giving this movie bad reviews.
A Wrinkle in Time (2018)
Film primarily for youth Audience, but okay watch for adults
I feel a lot of people rated this movie unfairly. Not many movies really deserve a 1, I feel like for a movie to really deserve a 1 it needs to be horrible. This movie wasn't horrible.
The movie has great messages of connection with all, of being yourself and letting your light shine and owning your faults (which may actually be your gifts).
I do feel like there was some flat acting in the movie, particularly in some of the beginning sequences, and the beginning was a little slow running for me, but it picked up as the movie moved forward, and there were scenes that were moving enough to have me crying.
My 12 year old son loved the movie, and I thought he might pee his pants because he didn't want to take a bathroom break in fear of missing something. I would have loved this movie when I was his age too. This is why I feel the audience for this movie is ages 7-13. The movie seems to deal with situations for this age range (isn't that the age range the book is written for too?).
I still liked the movie enough for it to hold my interest, I didn't feel burnt for paying to go see it, especially since my son liked it so much. I also loved the messages the movie had for my son - it was worth the watch just for that.
This is a good family film to take the kids to - but don't expect oscar worthy performances.
The Greatest Showman (2017)
I am ready for it to come to DVD so I can see it a 3rd time!
I LOVED this movie! I am surprised how much I loved this movie and it is the first movie I have ever scored a 10.. that says a lot for me. I also don't usually download a soundtrack for musicals, but I loved these songs! I don't know what the critics hated so much about it, but I loved the music, I loved how the movie inspired me to dream. Hugh Jackman's performance had heart. I'll admit, I am a lover and sucker for musicals and hands down, this is my new favorite!
The Emoji Movie (2017)
Light and cheesy - not as awful as some might say, but not stellar.
I've noticed this movie is getting a lot of hate ratings, and I wonder how many of the people that have rated it 1 have actually seen the movie. I have seen some movies that are worth rating a 1 before, but The Emoji Movie isn't quite that bad. This was the perfect movie for my 11 year old son, as he LOVED It! I was mildly amused. The movie wasn't awful, and it wasn't great.
The movie is about a "meh" emoticon that gets sent (by the user) while making a different face. Apparently, it is unheard of to make the wrong face, so that gets him into a lot of trouble. He befriends an emoticon that used to be popular, but is hardly ever used now, and they seek out a emoticon defector/hacker to help Gene (Meh), become the meh he thinks he is supposed to be. I felt the movie had a good message about being yourself, although the character's aren't given much depth in the film.
If you are considering taking your kids to this because you want something to do, but are unsure because of your reviews, you could take a chance on it. If you are broke and don't go to the movies very often, however, wait for video or streaming. Overall, it is a light, cheesy watch if there isn't anything else to see with the kids.
Corpses Are Forever (2004)
don't know why the video store bought so many copies
Me and my husband rented this one night thinking it could be pretty bad, but we like to give many different films a chance.... we were right, it was pretty darn bad. The story line was very confusing as it flashed back and forth and i am not sure i every fully understood what the heck they were trying to do with that.. it seemed like whoever came up with the story was going for a mind F@#$ kind of thing, but it wasn't working... and the acting... the acting had much to be desired... the main character and his kicking martial arts crap.... and it was so unrealistic you could tell that he wasn't really hitting them... This is one of those movies you feel embarrassed you ever spent the money to rent... I would have much rather cleaned the kitty litter.
