The Royal Hotel (2023)
Watch Hotel Coolgardie
This was a decent enough film on its own merits, however I urge anyone who enjoyed it, or even thought they were going to enjoy it but didn't, to watch Hotel Coolgardie. This is the true story documentary that the film is based on. The film is set in a very similar place, but the characters in the film, rough as they might be supposed to be, are far more clean cut than the people in real life. They are also far less sinister than the real life people, albeit it's more subtle in the documentary. Hotel Coolgardie really shows the pitfalls of isolation and toxic masculinity, and paints a really frightening portrait of rural Australia.
Child 44 (2015)
Read the book, ignore the movie
The beginning and end of the book have been completely removed, which took out the twist and the emotional punch.
Honestly, every single bit that stayed with me from the novel they took out, and instead turned it into a really basic police hunt bad guy movie.
There are so many nuances which have been lost. So many characters are thin, backstories removed or changed. It really is an appalling piece of script writing.
The only saving graces are the excellent cast, Tom Hardy in particular.
Do yourself a favour and read the book and don't bother with the movie. It's far more interesting and gives a bit of a history lesson too.
Friday Night Dinner: Lord Luck (2018)
Terrible acting
I love this show but the guy playing Johnny's friend makes this episode unwatchable.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Slant Magazine
Congratulations to the reviewer from Slant Magazine, for missing the point more than any film journalist in history, which is quite an achievement.
The bad reviews from some critics, it's like they wanted Schindler's List 2.
This is a great film, full of laughs and poignant moments.
I loved it.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Mac Finds His Pride (2018)
Some weird and angry people on here
I've never bothered to write a review of an episode of a TV show, but having seen and read the two extremes here of either 10/10 or 1/10 reviews, I felt compelled to weigh in.
This is a 10/10 episode. I have loved this show from day one, have watched every episode many times over, and this was one of my favourites.
The show belongs to Rob and Charlie. They can do what they like with it. They have earned that. And in Trump's America they reached out to a section of society that probably needed it in the current climate. And even more amazingly, they did it without being mawkish or over-sentimental or awkward. It was one of the rare times that a piece of art transcends its genre, rarer still when that genre is black comedy.
It was brave, touching and deserves to be applauded.
If for some reason a couple of minutes to take a stance - handled in an impeccable manner - over 13 seasons of comedy makes you angry, you have some serious, serious problems.
Bravo, Always Sunny.
