Troy (2004)
Bad quality film with good cast.
To be honest, I didn't have great expectations, since I'm not a very big fan of Wolfgang Petersen. I also quite love the Iliad, but I have learned to accept the fact that a film can never be true to the book to the last detail.
The first hour was kind of inexpressive, the pictures were ok but not extraordinary, the light was almost bad compared to other great productions, also the make up and costume departments didn't do their best jobs.
Although the movie needed a long warm-up it started to get thrilling after about an hour. I liked the fact that there was not too much focus on Paris and Helen (one had the impression after seeing the trailers, but trailers can be misleading a lot!) - Paris was almost perfectly personated by Orlando Bloom, who gave his performance a wonderful cowardly touch without being embarrassed by it. Eric Bana and Brad Pitt did a good job as usual, also Pete O'Toole was very touching.
Outstanding was the performance of Rose Byrne. I think she rescued the lacks in the plot. Impressive were also the choreographies of the man-against-man fights. I was sad to see that Kassandra and Eneas were (almost) cut. There should have been a bigger focus on the greek gods as well.
All in all, it was an entertaining night at the movies, if you're not too prissy about true adaptations.
Trapped (2002)
Worth seeing because of excellent cast!
This thriller was one like there are many out there: Not really bad, quite enthralling at times but a bit long in the end. A thriller trying to show the audience the depth of their "fabulous and interesting" characters, but not succeeding.
Nevertheless the film is worth seeing because of it's excellent cast. Charlize Theron, Kevin Bacon and Stuart Townsend were good as usual, esp. Townsend had a hard job, 'cause his character was surely the most uninteresting part.
I was really surprised to see Courtney Love in this film, I didn't know she was part of the cast. She did an excellent job, I wouldn't have thought that she's a quite talented actress.
So, 7 out of 10 (only!!) because of the fabulous performance of the whole cast.
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Black humour!
The sets were fatastic, the acting was superb and I loved the black humour packed into all the dialogues, expressions and acts of the characters. The film didn't take itself too serious, which was very important. The plot was tricky and surprising, all in all a good piece of work!
Johnny Depp was marvellous, as was Christina Ricci (though black suits her better ;))
The Sweetest Thing (2002)
Crap!
Reviewing today: THE SWEETEST THING! (+ DVD Bonus Material)
Well, as soon as the writer has to bulls*** herself in the Making Of to adjust the script, something MUST be terribly wrong, ey?
Oh yes! Movies the World DOES NOT NEED, Part I 'And YES, we tried to spit in the face of the genre... and yes, WE don't have any idea about film scripts, and yes, she can shake her boobs and you think she's a bloody bitch (no, she's a sweet girl!) and - yay! - we are bullshitting the genre!! WE ROCK!!'
Well, this film is one of the reasons why we should read books.
Don't have any clue what I'm talking about? Good. See the film to understand - or better: DON'T UNDERSTAND!
Tangled (2001)
Unimaginative!
At first I have to say that I really love Jonathan Rhys Meyers, I think he's one of the most talented young actors in the moment. I couldn't believe he signed for such a bad movie!
The plot in unconvincing and unimaginative. The so-called-thriller isn't enthralling for a second.
I'm also wondering why Rachel L. Cook was casted for this role, 'cause there isn't a spark of talent!
This film is a bad clichee, nothing more!
Queen of the Damned (2002)
What happened to the plot???
Gosh, this must be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I really love Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and Queen of the Damned is one of the best in the series. I loved her ideas, all the philosophy and the emotions that were in the book... BUT WHAT HAPPENED??? This movie has nothing to do with the book! They just picked out a few characters they seemed to like, mixed up the whole plot and made a 'common vampire film'. Hello??? Did I miss something? A pity Anne Rice sold the rights to Miramax, and I'm also sorry for Stuart Townsend who does his job as Lestat quite good (well, obviously he was the victim of a very very bad director!) If you liked INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, you won'T like this! Interview submitted the right feeling, but this movie is crap!
Velvet Goldmine (1998)
Excellent
I saw VELVET GOLDMINE a few days ago, and I have to say that it was the most inspiring film I've ever seen. The plot is really good, the structure of the movie is excellent and the actors are awesome, esp. Toni Collette and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers are very unique. Todd Haynes did a wonderful job. The photography and the sets are extraordinary and the structure of the film is great. The movie isn't told like a common story... pieces of the puzzle are collected 'till the end, an honor to Oscar Wilde. Music is ok.
