Very one sided
17 March 2022
Almost everyone interviewed is on the Russian side of the fence and talks from Russian point of view. Oliver Stone should have at least attempted to get more balanced perspectives of what he described as a complex issue. The film makes some very serious allegations without shred of evidence. This gives it credibility of a facebook post. OS is diminished by such a weak and naïve portrayal.

Terrible
15 November 2019
This film loosely covers the historical event with great significance in power struggles of 17th century Europe. Film interprets and reduces these struggles to religious terms as us against them and should thrill religious fanatics and nationalists everywhere. It has little resemblance to actual political maneuvering and complexity surrounding the event. The entire film is utter garbage.

Just ok

PG13 with mediocre inauthentic writing. Oscar? Please! Melek was not very convincing. Watch Freddie's interviews on youtube. Listening to Queen on theater audio system was joyous. Hoping to see a more talented team revisit the topic in depth it deserves.

The World Without US (2008 Video)

The other side of the coin
22 August 2012
This film is a breath of fresh air in the group think that grips public opinion in US and worldwide. The content is well researched, supported by facts and number of credible insiders. It explains why the isolationist policy that US practiced before world wars is not the answer and how regional conflicts left intact can explode and come back to hunt us. Film reveals for example that, despite the outcry and huge material and life sacrifices, US firms did not have preferential treatment in Iraq.

It also shows that those who stand on the side of freedom and democracy world wide expect the USA to act to protect them and those ideals. US presence is the only thing preventing North Korea from invading South, China from invading Taiwan, Arab countries from invading Kuwait, Arab countries from invading Israel, Israel from invading West Bank etc. Now that threat of USSR has abated, European public opinion on this subject is naive and inadequate. Europeans born after 1980 have no memory of cold war during which the only thing standing between Stalinism and self destructed Europe was the US. How does all this compute for those who accuse US of imperialism? Looking at some of the reviews here, it doesn't.

Fact is that we may live to see the world in which US can no longer afford this role. Perhaps Europeans will take over and keep the world stable with considerable firepower of their cynicism.

@thornsthorns: If you consider that Japan was at war with China and Russia in Early 1930s WWII did start in Asia.

Raw mindset of industrial revolution
22 July 2011
IMO, this film deals with the destructive mindset of someone determined to succeed at any cost. Nothing and no one that stands in way of the success is spared, himself included. It's the raw mindset of industrial revolution. It's the relentless driving force but also a destructive force. It could be argued that success demands such mindset since for one person to rise, he has to find ways of exploiting others. To do that he has to let go of human emotions. Yet his success has no goal. It's success for sake of success of one person at cost of many. Question is if the destination and cost humanity pays for each individual to reach it have any broader meaning. If not, there will be blood.

Antichrist (2009)

Antichrist is the nature
3 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Antichrist explores emotional weaknesses and animal instincts of both sexes, not just women as so many are pointing out. Dealing with extreme emotions after loss of child, man and woman are unable to truly understand each other. Removed from distractions of civilization the characters are increasingly reduced to pure instinct which results in tragedy. Man prevails because of his physical strength, not because he's right.

Antichrist is nature, or more specifically the gap between the nature of men and women resulting in their inability to truly understand each other. That gap is where evil comes from, that's the Antichrist, that's the gynocide.

I thought the graphic scenes are used well and result exactly in emotional response movie is supposed to evoke. I don't find it necessary to attribute any part of this movie to film maker's depression.

Thank you Mr. Manchevski
5 November 2004
This movie is absolute perfection. I can't believe it took me 10 years to bump into it by accident. I was surprised to see it was made in 1994 when the entire time I watched it as a reflection rather than prophecy of the civil war that followed.

The fluency of picture, music, and the story is perfect as viewer is taken from dramatic landscapes and slow paced life of orthodox priests to fast paced London streets and offices. Parallel stories in London fasten the pace even more.

The movie shows we are all connected not only in time (past and future) but space (geography) as well. War and suffering in one part of the world affect lives of people in quaint London restaurant. The circle of human tragedy connects almost every character in the movie. But circle is imperfect. If the circle were perfect the tragedy would stop when circle completes. Alas, the tragedy spirals in time and space.

Acting is very real. Time is not wasted overbuilding any character. The way soundtrack blends with the movie is pure art. Thank you for this movie Mr. Manchovski. As powerful as the movie is, it's unfortunate it didn't help prevent the civil war in Macedonia. When hate wins, innocence looses.
