Mystic River (2003)
A misery to sit through
Clearly a well-crafted and well-acted movie, but I left the theater wondering why anyone had bothered to make it in the first place. Sitting through it was one of the more unpleasant 2.25 hours I have spent in my life so far. There was nothing uplifting about this film.
Freaky Friday (2003)
Thoroughly enjoyable
I went to this movie on a date with some trepidation (I'm 48 years old), and was quite pleasantly surprised! I've seen the 1976 version too many times on video with my children, so I went already knowing the plot, but this version was well written and acted, hilariously funny (the slapstick went just far enough and not too far), and even moving. I highly recommend it to anyone over the age of 5.
Bossa Nova (2000)
A gem of a movie for those of us of a certain age
I've had this video in my armoire for many months and finally got around to watching it last night. What a complete delight it was! Quirky, interesting, sweet-natured. As a middle-aged single I particularly enjoyed the romantic plot strand involving two people of my vintage. Amy Irving is incandescent as always. This movie has a wonderfully European (okay, Brazilian) feel and sensibility. Not the usual canned Hollywood fare.
