Królik po berlinsku (2009)
Brilliant Berlin Rabbits!
It doesn't get any better, any more creative, and any more fascinating that this! "Rabbit ala Berlin" is the story of the generations of rabbits that lived behind the Berlin Wall and what happened to them through a sixty year history. The photography is amazing, the narration is excellent, and the layering of content is totally intriguing. Who would have thought of telling the story of the post war Potsdamer Platz through they eyes of our furry friends in the east? Don't miss it!
The Rum Diary (2011)
It grows on you
I hadn't read the Diary ahead of time, so went I went into the film totally virgin. Though I was pretty conflicted during the film, by the time I woke up this morning, I was ready to see it again. It works on so many levels. It's not about plot- as HST's writing is not about plot. I see it instead as a character/place/era study and the director got it all right. Even though the opening scene of hungover Depp on his first day in town didn't bode well, it didn't take long for the stumble to fade. The performances were all spot on except for the limp acting by Amber Heard, who could have been replaced by a mannequin with the same effect.
The Explosive Generation (1961)
Pivot point
I didn't expect much when I began watching this movie. By the end, I was completely stunned. Although it's billed as a film about teaching sex education in high school in 1961, it is, in fact, about the pivot point at which the silent generation gave way to the "explosive" boomers- the generation that wouldn't take no for an answer. What could have been filled with cheap platitudes about honesty in education and life, turned out to be a really deep exploration of how and why the generations changed from the 1950s to 1960s. The fact that it was made at the time it was happening and no one could know where this would all lead made it more amazing.
