I went into this movie with low expectations but it was good.
Depp is on top form as Tonto, a character that should have been as iconic as Captain Jack in the Pirates series.
Armie Hammer has a lightness of touch that allows him to transform from a squeaky clean naive do-gooder into a heroic lawman.
The ubiquitous Tom Wilkinson is almost unrecognisable as self-centred railroad magnate.
The running time is long but the film never drags. It illustrates not just the origin of a character, but the symmetry of how the characters cope with the way technology changes the world.
I laughed out loud several times at Depp's antics but by the time of the
exciting finale on the train I found the action- complete with William Tell Overture- quite stirring. I think it would take somebody with no sense of fun to be totally unmoved by this.
