It is so bad...
28 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
... that Edward Norton, when the movie was presented in Cannes last year, he left the theater when the end credits started rolling... and since i was sitting right in front of him during the showing, i guess he didn't want to see my face at the end of it... i'm not even talking about the goofs (there are too many), i'm talking about the story, the plot, the characters... this movie is one of the WORST ever... a modern-day western? come on, give me a break... this is the story of loser, an obsessive one that tries to get away from his valley of tears... characters' lines are so silly, i cannot even believe someone got paid to write those and someone else got paid to say those words... it could have been a great idea: the misfit in the huge metropolis, so huge you cannot even see the border... and when you try to escape from it, you can't... you can't live in it, you can't leave it... love is an illusion, distorted by what he wants and what she is looking for... for him it is an end, for her it should be a beginning... they go on and on, spiraling down to the obvious end... you know what they say about something so bad or so tragic that you can't prevent yourself from watching it happening anyway? it is not for that reason that i stayed till the end of the showing... i could not get up and leave, i was stuck in the middle of my line of seats... Do you have 7 dollars that you can spare? go get junk food... sooner or later that will get out of your system... this movie scars you for life!

SPOILER - Don't go and don't even rent it
27 October 2004
Warning: Spoilers
The director does not know what to do with a camera... too many options and she always always always picks the wrong one... she let travolta take charge... and he controls the movie from the beginning to the end... the characters are not developed... maybe because we need to watch them singing... no pace at all, sometimes too fast sometimes too slow... miscasted: travolta OK... johansson, she is too grown up to be a 18... even if she is really 20...

the happy ending? well it looks like that there must be one, so the story is sad but not too sad... travolta doesn't know how to play a guitar but the director doesn't look she cares too much that he is totally out of synch...

the idea is the only thing that is great... but how she developed it? well, it is simply full of stereotypes and lines heard too many times...

too bad, another missed chance...

Deja Vù...

Interesting, for sure... but don't you think that this Japanese New Wave has been a little too overrated? After all, David Lynch has been doing a terrific job and had been feeding us the same kind of weirdeness for a long time now... anyway, watch it and you won't be displeased... but don't think it is going to be an epiphany or any kind of breakthrough...

S U P E R!!!

The Brits made it again. It is simply a brilliant work, very well acted and well directed. Unfortunately, it does not cast Hugh Grant or some other 20 million a movie star. Brits make movies. Americans make money. Who's right? I don't know, but this is a movie that's surely worth to be seen. For a laugh, for a thought, for a sigh... of relief.
