Just for You (1964)
Completely extraordinary
What a glorious film! In every respect. I'm disappointed in my fellow imbd-ers for not rating it more highly. In popular culture only a thin top layer from 1964 has endured, but here we see that there was tremendous richness not far beneath, almost totally forgotten now. The film weaves these threads together absoluetly perfectly.
Dial 999 (1955)
Not Montgomery Tully's finest hour
The movie fails because the male lead, played by Gene Nelson, is unsympathetic from the start. Tully was a good director, but you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. The rest of the cast does their best, but a fish rots from the head down.
House of Strangers (1949)
The Godfather is a remake of House of Strangers
I say this not to take anything away from the greatness of The Godfather, but Marlon Brando has learned a lot from Edward G. Robinson in this film. Coppola's casting of the lead actor of House of Strangers, Richard Conte, as Barzini, was no accident. And of course Coppola has learned much from Manckiewicz. Two of the great films.
