In the Earth (2021)
10/10
A heady mix of hallucinogens, homage and horror.
20 June 2021
Ben Wheatley's In The Earth is yet another tour de force from a filmmaker with a stellar back-catalogue. The plot is deliberately vague; it's set somewhere in the UK sometime within a few years of its release date. The protagonists are doing research into an unspecified virus and neural connections to the living forest. That's about as much as needs to be said about the plot, watch it yourself and see as it becomes a slow descent into horror and hallucination. The direction is excellent, the story is well-paced. The performances are first class, the cinematography and score add to the feeling of apprehension and dread as the story plays out. I watched this knowing very little and was blown away by it. It's heartening to see that this kind of intelligent film can still be made in the UK. This may be too disconcerting and brutal to find a massive audience, but those who have enjoyed Ben Wheatley's previous work and many of the movies referenced in 'In The Earth' will find this an absolute feat of independent cinema. This delivers on all levels. Ignore the bad reviews, if the reviewers can't write more than a couple of poorly constructed sentences, then their opinion has no validity. Catch this at the cinema if you can or at home if you can't. You won't be disappointed.

The Big Ugly (2020)
1/10
Vinnie's latest straight to streaming stinkbomb
10 June 2021
Ron Perlman is big, Vinnie Jones is ugly, Malcom McDowell isn't big but he's no oil painting. Once again Vinnie's 'boat' is front and centre on another celluloid atrocity, except there's no way this was shot on 35mm and it's highly unlikely to ever hit a big screen. Vinnie didn't come to West Virginia for god, oh no. He came there because there are still a few Americans who think his gangster schtick is legit and are willing to pay him to mumble a few lines while looking 'ard. 'Back in London Harris is the top man' actually back in London Harris means arse or ass. Which is sadly ironic as Malcom is making a right 'arris of himself appearing alongside the ex-Wimbledon defender. 'Don't do it, think of the money' says Harris/McDowell. You shouldn't have done, think about your reputation say I. Obviously Vinnies does it and he doesn't think about the money (though there's no other reason for this to exist). This is written and directed by Scott Wiper, it could easily have been made by a windscreen wiper and packet of moist baby wipes. You're free to make your choice and pay for this on whatever screening service will host it, but if you keep paying them they'll only make more. So I return to the quote from 'Arris/Malcom/Little Alex 'Don't do it, think of the money' buy yourself something else instead.

Throwdown (2014)

Beyond Saving, throwdown, throw up and throw out
11 February 2020
Vinnie Jones goes beyond justice, beyond the pale and beyond the line of credulity in this bargain basement revenge stinker. Vinnie plays a father of no fixed accent who wants the kind of justices that real geezas mete out to bad slags who muck about wiv little kiddies. He is aided in his plot for mockney revenge by C movie staple Danny Trejo. His nemesis is half of Bros who wants to give 'im a right hander across the coupon, but Vinnie is aint 'aving none of it. Vinnie makes threats in his mota in his gaff and down the old rub a dub in a low budget straight to DVD stinker soon to be filling up the dump bins at Walmart. If you enjoy seeing eighties footballers 'act' with eighties boybands then this is the thing for you. However, if you have an IQ of 80 or higher you may find this twaddle insulting to your intelligence.

Best screen adaptation of the rave experience yet!
2 October 2019
I was drawn to this film, as I was heavily into the rave scene of the early 90s. As, I stated in the title of this review, this film is the most accurate portrayal of the scene yet produced. The film acknowledges that by 94 the whole rave thing was beginning to wain, but as the characters stated, it was still new and exciting to them. The juxtaposition between the grey, dullness of cinematography and the colourful montages used during the rave sequence, sum up what it was all about. This doesn't mean that all this film is is a walk down memory lane for aging ravers. Far from it, the themes are universal. The protagonists lead impoverished and dreary lives, they escape the monotony by listening to music, who cant identify with that? I won't go into the plot at all, as it's not really what the film is about. The continuity was good, the choice of music was spot on. The cast of unknowns did I really good job and the direction kept the whole thing moving forward at pace. To conclude this is a great movie about a time and place, now gone, but no forgotten.

Peterloo (2018)
10/10
Mike Leigh's Masterpiece
3 March 2019
Having read and heard mediocre reviews of Peterloo I wasn't that enthusiastic to watch it. Those reviews couldn't be more wrong, this is Mike Leigh's finest hour and I say this having been a fan of his for more than thirty years. This a film without a clear lead character, but with a clear message that it drives home masterfully. Those who claim it's too long are incorrect. Every scene just built the tension and comprehension higher and higher, making the final act as appalling and as heart-wrenching as it needed to be. The acting was absolutely fantastic and totally convincing. The costumes and continuity never missed a beat. This film should be the contender for the 2020 BAFTAs and Oscars, however the clear socialist message maybe not play to well in the states. Watch this and you'll never stand for the queen again.

Kenneth's friends?
27 February 2019
I had the misfortune to pay to see this film upon it's release. It came out at a time when Kenneth and Emma were the flavour of the month and could get away with any old rubbish, hence this film. It compares unfavourably with the Big Chill and is definitely derivative. The plot centres around the titular Peter and his upper class friends. Said friends are gathered together to hear Peter's news, no frivivolity ensues. I am truly amazed to see a film as turgid as this still manages to garner a 7.0 rating, it's much worse than that. The characters are largely unlikeable, over-privelidged and entitled. There may have been on set chemistry as the actors seem to gathered from Kenneth Brannagh's address book, however there is no on screen chemistry at all. The dialogue grates and clashes with English setting as does the mostly American soundtrack, quite possibly to help it attract a US audience. The end result is really something quite awful. There are no spoliers in this review, the movie couldn't be spoilt any further. It's been 27 years since I watched and I'm still irrated by the smug coziness of it as I force myself to remember it.

Arrival (II) (2016)
6/10
Easy review
10 February 2017
I watched this movie last month. The reason I chose Arrival was because of Amy Adams. The story begins with Amy Adams character working as a linguistics professor in a university. Then, UFOs arrive at the Earth. After that, she was approached by a high-ranking army officer. The US government wanted her to communicate with the aliens.

The cast of this movie is okay. The cinematography is quite interesting.

The editing is rather confusing for me because of the flashbacks. The special effects didn't impress me.I found the movie a little bit slow.

In conclusion, I think this movie is more drama than sci-fi.This movie is quite plodding and didn't hold my attention.

Carnage Park (2016)
1/10
Derivative
3 July 2016
I spent 90 minutes of my free time watching Carnage Park. Five minutes in a voice inside my head kept saying "Turn it off!Turn it off!" Now I wish I had. It's not that Carnage Park is offensive or reprehensible, it's that it just was so derivative. There were bits of many much better films all ripped off and slung together. Seeing reference to: Wolf Creek, Fargo, The Hills Have Eyes, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Getaway, Dusk Till Dawn and even House of a 1,000 corpses (not that the last one is a good film) just reminds of how good horror can be and how poor this film ultimately is. Clearly the film was going for a seventies vibe, but it never go it. By all means watch this film, but then watch one of the films I mentioned and see what I mean.

Absolute twaddle!
9 February 2016
This is one of the worst films I have ever seen. It's not objectionable or offensive, it's just very, very poor. The plot is trying to be a British Easy Rider, but it misses all its marks. It wants to be a druggie cult movie but demonstrates laughable ignorance of that world. Phil Daniels performance is especially risible. His attempt at acting high is just pathetic. I would avoid this like the plague or expected to be bored out of mind. I can honestly say I didn't laugh once during the entire movie. I can only hope that the UK stops making this kind of'comedy' as it reflects poorly on the country as a whole. Apparently my review is to short purple monkey dishwasher purple monkey dishwasher

Kill Kane (2016)

Worst Vinnie flick since the last one
18 January 2016
In a derivative story of suburban violence| family man Ray Brookes(AKA The voice of Mr. Ben) seeks revenge when his wife and children are murdered by infamous gangsters (Brian Kant and Floella Benjamin). Unable to place his order for chips with curry sauce he is left with no faith in the justice system and with nothing left to lose except 74 minutes of low quality 'entertainment' he turns vigilante, crazy ape bonkers, bat-sh*t but not the other cheek and stalks the streets like some kind of cockney leopard on the hunt for those who robbed him of a future as a football pundit.

Watch this movie or have your colon cleansed, the choice is yours.

Two hours I'll never get back.
20 August 2015
Just wasted two hours of my life watching this made for TV two parter. To start with the lead character was unconvincing and her motivations unclear. The story was muddled and the whole conclusion seemed rushed and truncated. The Eastern Europeans were two dimensional stereotypes which bordered on racist. I was hoping for something akin to 'Code of a Killer' or 'Safe House' dramas made by the terrestrial UK channels, however this Sky production shows they still are way behind when it comes to drama. I thought Mark Lewis Jones and Michael Smiley did their best with a very sub par script. Other than that it was a very forgettable experience.

Quite possibly the stupidest movie ever made!
6 March 2014
I saw this celluloid atrocity at a Multiplex in Sheffield and I was being met outside the cinema at the allotted finishing time, otherwise I would've got up and left.

Where to start with arse numbing bore fest. First Billy Bob as the NASA guy? Crackers running the space program! Give us a break his performance is fine for playing a banjo in Deliverance not here. The rest of the plot is a rip off of the Dirty Dozen. The characters are all 2 dimensional stereotypes Flawed hero check. Doting daughter check. Hunky jock type check ( Ben Affleck hang your head in shame). Nerd check. Fat guy check. Big black guy check. Authority figure who learns grudging respect check. Top this all of with stupid science and an awful stomach churning montage with the abysmal Aerosmith! Could it get any worse? Yes it can the end has more cheese than chiller aisle at Sainsburys. Avoid this stinker like the plague or experience the cinematic version of a frontal lobotomy.

Violent, controversial and well paced
4 June 2012
A.C.A.B is a phrase I grew up with in the U.K in the early eighties and was often seen tattooed on the fingers, necks and one time forehead of skinheads. I was intrigued to see it being used in Italy, that drew me to see the film.

A.C.A.B the film centers on the exploits of small group of riot police in Rome.I found it to be very well paced, realistic though budgetary constraints made the riot scenes seem a little under populated. The characters were well developed and the action scenes well directed.

There was a lot of racism in the film and the direction is kind of ambivalent about it.

To conclude I would urge you to watch this film and form you own opinion.

The Thing (I) (2011)

I don't get all the negative reviews
25 November 2011
Let me start by saying that I'm a huge fan of John Carpenter's 1982 film, so I was horrified to hear it was being remade. Luckily those early reports were incorrect as "The Thing 2011" is a prequel and not a remake. That said I had low expectations when I sat down to watch it as most of the remakes/re-imaginings of classic horrors recently have been poor. This isn't, in fact it's very good and comes over as an homage to the 1982 "Thing".

I found the characters believable, the acting solid, the story well paced and the creature effects good, though not as gut wrenching as Rob Botin's creature. You really have to watch right until the end of the credits to see how neatly it the conclude to serve as an almost perfect companion piece to the 1982 film.

To conclude don't believe the bad reviews watch this movie; and then the original, preferably in a double bill, and you'll see exactly what I mean, it's rare to see a prequel/sequel or remake show such respect to the source material.

Over the top "Taken" wannabe
17 March 2011
I wanted to like this movie it's British and so am I. It's writer and director are obviously alarmed at the criminal elements flooding in the U.K. and so am I. So why didn't I like it? Firstly the acting, over the top clichéd Eastern European accents by British actors ( I know their Brits because of all the commercials I've seen them in). The actual "stars" were pretty poor to I really think they wanted a leading man to be like Bob Hoskins in "The Long Good Friday" but it just didn't work.

Secondly the plot was so full of holes it must have resembled a teabag.

I really can't be bothered to list them all as it would take as long as the 88 minutes I spent watching this stink bomb.

Finally the action and amount of killings were at a cartoon like level and never a policeman in the area? The UK isn't this violent it is a violent place but not in the way portrayed here.

The only plus for this film is that it didn't have Danny Dyer in it that was the only reason I decided to watch it. If your looking for a good British gangster movie, look elsewhere.
