I was pretty hyped when I came across a trailer for this movie on you tube, it looked promising, it offered really great special effects. So when the day of theatrical release finally came and after watching through the movie, here's what I think of it:
Firstly I'll start off with the good things of this movie. I really liked the action scenes, although the showdown between Perseus and Hades ticked me off, but my point is the action scenes were a fun watch. I also liked some of the humorous scenes it was pretty well timed and lightened up the atmosphere of the film. The cinematography was really good too, I liked how they shot the really good scenery and view, it gives the film a pretty epic touch to it.
The bad things about this movie, now where do I start? Poor character development, we've got the main character, Perseus (portrayed by Sam Worthington), a half-man half-god whose adopted family was killed by Hades and now he seeks revenge by joining King Cepheus' soldiers in a battle against Hades. I personally think that Perseus wasn't given enough depth and complexity so that viewers can enjoy and care about his character, not that I'm saying Sam Worthington did a poor job though, but it's just that the script wasn't well written, which brings me to my next point.
Weak plot development, although it had a lot of potential, the story felt rushed and it was pretty shallow. Because this movie, for me, indulged too much on the flashy special effects and as a result, compromised a good plot.
Good main characters would not be complete without good supporting characters, and unfortunately this was what the movie lacked too. They were pretty forgettable, and I will just talk about two of them: Io (Gemma Arterton) and Zeus (Liam Neeson). Io, is a woman who is cursed with agelessness, and throughout the film, she acts as a mentor and, possibly, love interest of Perseus. The mentor and student relationship between these two characters wasn't given enough development to make it convincing. Then there's Zeus, Perseus' real father. For a god, he acts like a whiny kid who, for the entire course of the movie, just complains about how humans are not expressing enough love and devotion to him and his fellow gods, and he just isn't likable as a character overall.
The villains also didn't have the proper treatment in this movie too, because, for me, they were not very intimidating and didn't have enough qualities for viewers to care about as a villain.
So that sums up my review of this movie, and I heard from rumors that they are planning to make a Clash of the Titans trilogy, well if that's true, I just hope that the filmmakers will realize the mistakes they did with this movie and improve on them.
My final thoughts: if you're looking for an in-depth epic fantasy film such as Lord of the Rings, this ain't the movie for you. But if you're just looking for a fantasy/adventure flick just to kill time and for entertainment, this is the movie for you.
