If you are a fan of the book, then you should like this movie too
22 May 2006
I don't know why critics have been fussing about this movie. It's The Da Vinci Code come to life, with the exception of a few very minor details left out. Sure I had picked my ideal cast for this movie and when the cast was actually announced, I had my misgivings. But none of that mattered when I actually saw the movie because the acting was so good it made me forget about whom I wanted to see in the movie instead. I also loved how Mr. Howard handled the various historical explanations. Instead of just resorting to dialogue, Mr. Howard showed us what happened by transporting us back to Rome and Constantinople and the witch trials and the Templar knights, etc. So kudos Mr. Howard and company for making such an excellent screen adaptation!

Ugh! Major letdown! Wait for DVD release....
9 May 2005
Warning: Spoilers
My friends and I saw this stinker on opening night fully expecting such greatness as was found in Gladiator and Black Hawk Down (or at least I thought those movies were great). Instead, we ended up moaning over the fact we contributed our money to support another slapped together totally uninspired snooze-fest.

First of all, I do claim to be a fan of Mr. Bloom. Secondly, I think he should stick with playing the sidekick and leave the leading man roles to those capable of carrying a movie. I think that would have helped KOH in my opinion. Somebody like Christian Bale (who really knows how to beef up!) or Sean Bean (maybe a little old but they could have gotten somebody else to play his father other than Liam). Orlando is simply too puny to realistically portray a blacksmith. Yeah, he did it in POTC, but that movie was a fantasy and not reality.

Since I don't know how true the historical aspects of the movie really were portrayed, I won't criticize those elements, but I think if Ridley wanted to do a movie about the crusades, surely he could have chosen a better storyline? I mean, wasn't there something about a children's crusade? Now that might have been interesting...

Other than Mr. Bloom, I think the rest of the cast worked for the movie. If only the plot, editing, dialogue, etc. etc. had not sucked maybe this movie wouldn't have been so bad. I mean, we are supposed to believe that Balian all of sudden knows how to kick ass and plan strategic warfare? Must have been all that knowledge acquired from Lord of the Rings. I thought those siege towers and cavalry charge looked awfully familiar....

9/10 action flick
10 February 2004
The action was awesome. Christian Bale was superb as the hero and beats out Keanu Reeves anyday with his martial stunts. To me, this movie proves Christian can be the next Batman. I just wish there had been more scenes with Sean Bean. Still, it's a must see!!!

Did not meet my expectations
10 July 2003
After months of anticipation, Pirates just did not live up to my expectations. I know it is a Disney flick and based on a ride, but I was hoping for a little more realism. Plus, it was a bit overlong. I found myself wondering when it was going to end before it even ended which is never a good sign to me. I also did not like the cheesy ending.

On the other hand, the hottie factor was definitely high between Orlando and Johnny. Though they both played their roles well, I think the award for best acting in this movie should go to Geoffrey Rush. He was great.

I admit the film had plenty of laughs and some of the one-on-one fight scenes were interesting. Though in this day and age, I guess I expect more blood and guts.

This is definitely a family movie, so kids, go see it.

Caesar (2002)
6/10
Half-way good
1 July 2003
I was riveted to my seat during the first night's showing of Caesar on TNT. I had not known much about the young Caesar so that was an interesting discovery. I thought Jeremy Sisto did a great job with what he had to work with. I was thoroughly disappointed with the second night's showing. It seems like it was rushed through just to get the movie out in the allotted timeframe. I wanted more information about Caesar's time in Gaul, when he marched back to Rome, when he went after Cato and Pompey, when he was in Egypt, when he was back in Rome. They instead focused on his imminent assassination and skimmed over the rest. I found myself wondering why Caesar was so great because he sure was not presented as such in this production. What exactly did he accomplish for Rome besides bringing in more wealth from his conquests? I suppose a look in the history books would answer the question, but I was hoping to find my answer in the 3 plus hours of "Caesar."

I was especially disappointed with the battle between the Romans and the Gauls. It seemed like the Gauls had the advantage and all of a sudden they retreated when Caesar showed up with his horses. Why? I think the battle scene footage was horribly shot. Then there appeared to be an absence of bodies lying around in the aftermath. I find it hard to believe somebody would come in and clean up the field so quickly. You would have found it surprising there ever was a battle the way it was portrayed on film. Also, where did the Gauls who had been surrounded for months get all those healthy looking horses? If they were starving, wouldn't the horses be the first to go instead of the women and children? Did they save all of their food to feed the horses? It looked like every single man coming out of that fortress had his own horse. All in all, I only recommend this movie for when you have nothing better to watch.

Not as bad as expected
30 June 2003
When I finally got around to watching this mini-series after putting it off for two months, I found I could not tear my eyes away from it. I never read The Iliad and I don't care about whether or not the story was true to history. I thoroughly enjoyed the production. I thought the sets, costumes and casting were terrific. The standouts to me were Rufus Sewell as Agamemnon and Matthew Marsden as Paris. The look in Rufus' eye when he was told what he had to do to get the winds cooperating for the ships to sail almost brought me to tears.

The only problem I had was how everyone basically looked the same after a passing of ten years. I figured with that climate and particularly a major war going on, the characters would start to look a little worse for wear. Still, the eye candy was quite commendable and I will probably re-watch whenever it comes back on tv.

Artsy war movie that would not end.....
2 June 2003
Caught this film on tv and because I kept hoping it would get better, I watched the entire movie even though there were several times I wanted to shut the tv off. I think the only thing I found interesting were all the cameo appearances which is probably the real reason I watched it to the bitter end. Oh, and trying to catch scenes with Adrien Brody. After recently watching The Piano, I wanted to check out more of his acting. I had hoped to see more of him in the movie because he was billed near the top. Well, I was disappointed. I did not even notice if he had any speaking lines. The other characters probably would not let him get a word in edgewise. Blah, blah, blah. I know war is scary as hell and can cause mental instabilities, but I wish they would quit talking/screaming about it and just get to their objectives. I found the voice-overs extremely annoying and the flashbacks/dream-like sequences unnecessary.

I was disappointed because I was hoping for a shoot'em up war movie to get the adrenaline pumping. After the first five minutes, I was totally confused about the direction of this movie. I mean, is this a movie about frolicking with a bunch of natives during war time or are they gonna fight? When they finally made contact with the enemy, I did not even find the battle scenes very suspenseful. I also found the whole way this film was shot very annoying. I just did not "feel" the soldiers angst or fear. I have a feeling this movie was supposed to have an impact on my "psyche." Well, it did not. Watch South Pacific instead. At least with that movie you get some catchy tunes.

Ghost Ship (2002)
Don't do it
19 May 2003
Yuck! Rented this stinker over the weekend. The first gory scene was pretty cool though my friend and I were eating at the time and our appetites waned after that. It then just went downhill. It was either due to really horrible editing or the writers got bored themselves. For example, the first few deaths were played up more, but then the next thing you know Gabriel, Karl Urban and the guy from ER are quickly killed off with no real suspense. So much for the mystery of what had happened to all the people on the ship. Let's show it all in a flashback montage! And why was that girl dragged back to her room just to get hanged? Why didn't they pop her off along with the other people? I put my hide-behind pillow down towards the end of the movie because I came to the conclusion this movie is not scary nor interesting. It was just plain dumb and a waste of great acting talent.

Oh my Gawd!
15 May 2003
Wow! Despite the fact it was past my bedtime when I saw this movie, I was wide awake throughout it. I can only describe the movie using three words: Fun, fun, fun. Agent Smith ruled (well, he is the king of the elves), Neo and the rest of the crew kicked a**, and the special effects were completely awesome. Go see this movie!!!!
